  • Tom Greenleaves, Principal Timpanist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, gives a masterclass in the Barbican Hall with students from the Guildhall School of Music. Focusing on selected cornerstones of the quintessential German orchestral repertoire, Tom sheds light on both the similarity and the disparity between the German and British timpani traditions.

never seen a timpani masterclass before, and I think it's a great idea. (I'm not a timp player but I play drums in a rock band)

I am guessing a good timpanist must have perfect or near perfect pitch?

I find the German configuration of the timpani drums very odd and difficult because it is opposed to all keyboard instruments which which have the lower notes on the left side of the player and higher notes on the right side of the player. I much prefer the proper American configuration of the timpani drums
