Do you think they will do ok during winter in a clay pot? I'm in 7b, west TN. It gets very hot here, but then winter shows up for a few days or weeks at freezing or below. I have not yet put mine in-ground. Thanks for the video! Your plants are gorgeous!
Thank you… 💚💚💚🤗 Growing cacti in pots is a bit tricky, especially if your pots will get too much rain in the winter. If they are sheltered under a porch, they should be fine in your zone. Best of luck… I have included some additional information… 😎 Eastern prickly pear cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is a cold-hardy cactus native to the Eastern United States. It's hardy to zone 4 (-30 F), which means almost anyone can grow prickly pear fruits at home (even outside the desert). Prickly Pear cactus grows best in zones 7-10. It grows best in full sunlight. The soil should be well-drained and gravelly.
I live in zone 10B, which has a mild winter and occasional rain. In my experience they took a couple of years to start growing and producing pads. If you have them in pots it may take longer than when they are in the ground. My Opuntia go dormant in the winter and start to produce in spring. I am not sure how they would do in a tropical zone. I wouldn’t eat it due to the type of spines it has. As to the actual pulp….. I am not sure….. I have never known of anyone using these as food, but in a survival mode situation…. Hummm maybe worth it to research. 😎💚💚💚✌🏼
Yes, most Rita Opuntia flower yellow….. but there are several that do flower in other tones…. I agree, sometimes the growers misclassify the plants. Thank you so much for your insight. 💚
I just use regular cactus soil or add pearlite to regular potting soil. That being said the key is a good draining pot and letting your plants dry out between watering. 💚💚💚

This is not a santa rita. Their flowers are only yellow. This is Opuntia macrocentra.
