    FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

      It will probably be the SAME pandemic, but hopefully to a lesser enough degree that something like Air Venture can be run. MAYBE. Eventually COVID will become a seasonal thing, like other flus, hopefully, or there will be a vaccine (that has to be tweaked every year, most likely).

    Varieze pilot here: absolutely brilliant. LEZ Kyle is a brave one letting a noob fly front seat :-) What an experience! First canard flight AND landing at OSH with Chatter and not knowing what to expect. A bit like my first solo in the VE which had all the pressure, but not the extras. I have done straight rolls, but the add some rudder is interesting and will try. The air to air was awesome especially the landing! Great Job for a first flight!

    Learned something about the LongEZ... Now it makes sense as to why the rudders operate the way the do... They serve double duty operating as speed brakes! Thank you!

    • @MrJdsenior
      @MrJdsenior 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Got it, also there is a belly brake for decreasing L/D to get the thing down over objects, as it's practically a low performance sail plane at idle (or off). It shouldn't be left down on the ground, though, as it partially blocks the flow to the intake cooling air duct (not physically, but aero flow wise). The differential nature of the tip draggers also serves as high speed ground steering, like a rudder would normally, since the brakes are at the bottom, as you say..just in a differential pedal mode.

    • @TD_YT066
      @TD_YT066 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep , no flaps, you fly them right down to the runway, hardly any flare. 80kts, coming in hot compared to most 2 seat piston.

    • @MrJdsenior
      @MrJdsenior 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TD_YT066 No flaps, but there is a belly brake on the bottom of the fuselage, to allow you to increase the descending glide slope, otherwise you'd have a hell of a time getting in anywhere, as the thing glides not too far from a low performance sail plane, even engine off (prop stopped). You do still flare though, but not as much as a normal configured aircraft. You can certainly make ultra smooth landings with an EZ, though, not only, as my instructor used to call them "hemorrhoid checkers", when you plant solidly for various reasons, or just a botched flare.

The fun part was all of the people that ran out to look at the airplane, every place i landed it.

    Thx Chops for this video. I've heard that the LongEZ design of Burt Rutan is the most economical of planes (8L/h) and has a top speed of 300km/h(+) and range of 3 200km/ 2 000miles. (With a ferry tank in the backseat its range is 7 700km! [+/- 5 000miles]) BUT on YT it said a man takes about 5 hours to learn and practice to change for a normal plane to the Long EZ. Burt Rutan also made the Model 74 Defiant. like a Long EZ with an extra engine in the front! For some strange and unknown reason that plane is not very popular? I thinks is a Fantastic and Save idea!

    • @ParadigmUnkn0wn
      @ParadigmUnkn0wn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Long-EZ has amazing range, but not amazing comfort as you can see. What good is an airplane that can fly for 12 hours if you can't stand to sit in for for more than 5 hours at a time. The Cozy and Velocity expand the cabin quite a bit and are quite popular even today, especially the Velocity XL. All of them have been what I'd consider successful, especially considering almost all of the Long-EZs and Cozys out there were built from plans or very basic kits. It's not uncommon to spend well over a thousand hours on shaping and sanding. The glass-on-foam construction isn't difficult, just tedious.

    • @buckmurdock2500
      @buckmurdock2500 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plans for the Defiant were offered in late '84, Rutan withdrew from the plans market in 1985. Only ~170 sets of plans were sold. Too bad, it probably would have been very popular.

I taught my 11 year old granddaughter how to do barrel roll from the back seat, unassisted. When my niece was in the Airforce Academy and home on leave in summers, I'd take her flying. It was an interesting experiment, but the RV left it in the dust. Easier to build, they fly better and have no weird HQ. EZ looks cooler but that's about it.

    • @slk23
      @slk23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sblack48 I agree RVs are easier to build since Van's sells kits and the Rutan designs were plans only. Also, the composite finishing can be quite time consuming. But I have disagree about flying characteristics. My VariEze is a dream to fly and handles better than the RVs I've been in.

    • @sblack48
      @sblack48 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Kearney pilots tend to like the last thing they flew a lot. So if you are tuned to the long ez an rv won’t feel comfortable at first. I certainly have never heard an rv owner say a long ez flies better. Post that to vansairforce.net and you will be flamed from every side! What I was referring to was the specific characteristics of a canard. For somebody used to a conventional airplane they can be problematic in the beginning. Many quickies and dragon flys collapsed the canards on the initial flights because the pilots released aft stick after rotation, which is a no-no. Also, they love lots of runway.

    • @MrJdsenior
      @MrJdsenior 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a canard, like the Wright brothers...LOL.

    • @MrJdsenior
      @MrJdsenior 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sblack48 EXCEPT when you STALL your RV. Not too sure about all the rest of it, either. What is the range of the RV? A Long flew over 4000 miles non stop (modded with a rear tank), flew to 27K feet altitude, and if I remember correctly he might have been THERMALING at the time and he gave up due to being cold, not because the VSI wasn't STILL positive, and on and on. I remember when I looked at kits available at the time, the RV wasn't even in my penultimate cut, but TWO Rutan designs (one an quickie offshoot, actually, the Q200) were.
      And there are FAR better kits available than the RV now, from many different aspects. Also, at least at the time I was into the 'sport' (built a LongEZ) I don't remember seeing ROWS of RVs at Oshkosh, like I did the Rutan designs, maybe it was just because I didn't care about them, since they weren't very interesting to my engineering sensibilities, just another standard (but WAY too boxy) configuration, a homebuilt Cessna spam can looking thing, but worse. Nothing against any RV builder, this comment just seriously rubbed me the wrong way, so I thought I'd address it. more or less in the same manner as the original comment. The lots of runway I will give you, but if you don't fly an aircraft in the manner it was intended to be flown, what do you expect about the rest? One of the main points of a Long/Vari is you COULD fly with the stick at the rear stop with NO chance of ending up dead from a vertical spinning nightmare...and yeah, if you fly the RV right, that won't happen, but how many private pilots die due to stall/spins in the pattern? A lot. Will and has NEVER happened in a properly built and CG'd Long or Vari. THAT was one of the major design criteria...and NO other aircraft except a canard (or a computer stabilized one, which in some cases basically just won't let you depart it in that condition) can accomplish that.

    As a kid I built an veri Eze not the long between 1983-85 with my grandfather who flew transport in WWII. The Long came out a few years later when people wanted more power and space. Rutan came up with the Eze idea to dominate the long distance endurance races that were a big thing during the oil embargo yrs. He absolutely crushed everyone with the Veri Eze. We built to his max efficiency and my grandfather had s life time of building experience. So we used builder sights shot lines etc. No starter it was hand propped. We ran 180 at 4gph😳. Such an awesome plane. But we only had room for a clean pair of boxers so didn’t do many long trips, but we flew it allot.
