I didn't even know coral nurseries we're a thing until just now. These people are doing fantastic work, and I want to thank them so much for protecting the environment.
+Yo Mama its still amazing though... I imagining what would be like if I worked with them, witnessing the incredible life of this corals would be awesome enough and also be able to help in the conservation of this endangered corals would feel really great..
You can grow corals at home which is a lot of work and a lot of money xP reef tanks are what you can do to grow them yourself but heads up it’s crazy expensive and it’s a good market for an experienced reefer or if your a beginner reefer try zoas and mushrooms
"we might not know whats gonna happen to the reefs, but i wanna make sure that in the future. I can look at my daughter and say I tried!" Loveeee thisss!!!!!!!

she is helping the enviroment? if u put coral in a dying reef it wont help because it will just die with the reef. And coral requires lots of energy to grow, energy usually comes from fossil fuels, which ruins the enviroment even more. so it is very counter intuitive.
There are four groups of humans The ones that complain but don’t do anything about it The ones that complain but actually act on it The ones that ignore it The ones that destroy it
Amazing work, I’m a student getting my undergraduates degree in marine biology, and we do a lot of work like this, we recently in the beginning of august collected the spawning from A.PAL because they are endangered. For my thesis I will be looking at micro-fragmentation on artificial substrates as a way for reef restoration. I’m currently working on my proposal and January next year I am to begin my work......I’m excited........Great video!!!!!
How are you at designing a coral reef using a iron barge that can be placed and sunk at predetermined area, it can be arranged, it would get you started in farming
Corals are hermaphrodites, meaning that they have both male and female gametes and can produce eggs and sperm. So technically the pronouns would be "it" but "he" does sound better. 🙃
@ People should check up on survivorship bias. You dont think scientists are well aware of the requirements corals have, or that their observed data is true/relevant/something that should be taken into consideration more than "stuff existed before, it will continue to do that"?
@ To check if a claim is factual or just the comment from a overcertain individual. Is to check the merits of the sources/proofs they have provided. And you have provided absolutely zero sources. The co2 lags claim might be answered by this video th-cam.com/video/zQ3PzYU1N7A/w-d-xo.html
@ To be fair, the reason we need to breed Elkhorn and Staghorn now is because there was an epidemic that wiped 95% of them out and although they are recovering in some places, that's not the same for everywhere and in some places it's much slower than optimal if at all.
And as she said, it's relatively hard for them to reproduce with the small population size. If you look at historical records of their populations and look at them now you will see the huge difference. They literally use to dominate the shallow reefs but now they are rare and endangered
What they should be doing as well is breeding a variation of the corals that can withstand the harsher conditions of the future. It seems like corals can't naturally adapt fast enough, so we should definitely help them...
Like what Combed Autumn said it would be a bad idea. If corals were bred for one factor in nature another influence can cause corals to die off again. We should just let nature thrive in their own. We have already made bacteria resistant to our medicine and they did that on their own.
It’s an interesting concept, but there are so many thousands of species that it would be almost impossible to do that with the majority of species. Not to mention seeing corals in spawn in captivity is incredibly rare. It is highly dependent on perfect conditions and lunar cycles. Captive spawning of corals is almost unheard of, however I’ve personally witnessed my anemones spawning and I know some species of tridacna clams have also spawned.
Sure, it's better to risk whole ecosystems bringing new species to uncontrolled habitats than try to preserve our natural patrimony 😂 sorry, there is no easy fix
Growing new coral colonies (correction: "Attempting to grow...") from fertilized embryos was one of my jobs as a research assistant at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia in 2000. Needless to say, I had no success after one spawning event and soon left to work on infectious diseases. I am now a science teacher and will show this video to my students today. It is nice to see that perseverance and ingenuity has won out in this field. Also reassuring that it took 9 years to establish this technique - so I don't feel so bad about having no luck in the few months that I spent attempting to do this all those years ago. Thanks for the video.
I used to dream into becoming a marine biologist. The ocean ecosystem is really intricate and elegant. I might actually consider getting it as my minor in the future.
GD that cracked me up. I can just see him on the shore, all beaten to shit, gun drawn and chest cartoonishly pointed at the sky as an oil tanker runs adrift a reef.
At first i strongly agreed with post but i think they were referencing it as under phylum cnidaria which was discussed in beginning and includes both anemones and corals

I lived in Islamorada for about 15 years and never knew about the coral nurseries down near me. It's nice to see such an amazing work happening c: Thank you TH-cam recommendation
This is the most informational and professional video made compared to all those fake reefers out there who is fragging corals for the money and trying to catch the TH-cam fame, likes and subscribe bs. The cool thing is that you are breeding corals and have a purpose for it unlike some people who are fragging corals for the money. 😁
Thank you! That was wonderful to see. I have loved keeping reef and fish tanks for decades. Someday I would like to visit the Georgia Aquarium. I've seen it so many times by remote viewing. I really appreciate the videos on TH-cam and the research you're doing.
that is really interesting! thanks to all biologist that help restore corals... but still, they are working on limiting the symptoms - whereas we all need to work on the actual cause - pollution of the oceans, plastic, global warming... this gives reason for hope though!

Tyler Fishman well ya humans grow in the same sense. But my point is that "raise" is the term for animals. "Grow" is for plants... You don't grow a human or a dog
Not if you say something like "when I grow up". I hate to say this but that is kind of trivial. I'm sure language matters in many settings, but kind of missing the point of this video. The fact that we have to intervene to replenish coral into reef says a lot about the state of some of these areas.
Good stuff. Does growing these coral in captive environment in their early stages where it looks like there is no water flow or movement somehow weaken them to adapt to real world situations in the oceans?
actually those tanks have massive amounts of water flow. anywhere from 20-40 times tank volume on average. also i don't think their releasing those into the wild, rather studying them so they know how to help the ones already in the wild better.
What an amazing group of people who barely even get credits from what they do. I salut you all scientist out there who are trying what they can to help the environment.
