Big Daddy Kane and Rakim were supposed to battle...Rakim had an underground song call 'cut the wrath in half' a play on BDKs song 'wrath of kane' They disagreed with the definition of freestyle and so they never battled.
You are correct that this is BDKs definition.
But if you go deeper you'll see that his compadre Biz Markie THE-BIZ-EMAZA-EMAZA-ARKIE disagreed. Biz could rap for 5 hours OFF THE TOP weaving in and out of written, canned, and his surroundings. KRS-1 completely disagreed with BDKs definition.
This is an unresolved debate dating back multiple decades.
I lived in NJ all my life- 30 minutes from NYC, and I still have bootleg tapes of NY rappers from house party's, block party's, and club performances that I got from record stores. Years before Kurt's Blow was known...they would rap in the record stores -before reaction channels that would be the place to go to analyze and x-ray the rap lyrics and discuss who's doing what and where. DJs would work on techniques, and rappers would freestyle.
The debate was always written vs freestyle.
When some got frustrated because they couldn't (we called it..skull to mouth) rap off the top they loosened the definition to include beat oriented.
My take has always been if you're freestyling with something you wrote then you're just rapping, why give it another name...this is the opinion of many but Kane was in the other camp.
Well, I guess everyone has their own definition. Valid points, my man. 🤝
