Man I watch your video like 30 times and this is the only vid that actually boosted my confidence to drive stick shift. Picked up my 2020 Subaru WRX STI today and drove home easy peasy Thank you
Like AI said, practice. I learned to drive stick later in life because I was becoming a UPS delivery driver. I had to take my road test in a package truck with know power steering, I passed and honestly like you said it becomes second nature. But I will say to those trying to learn to drive a stick, don’t give up because it takes practice and time and nobody is perfect. Just remember grind it until you find it lol
lol I just bought a manual WRX with a vague idea how to drive it. I managed to drive it to work but I’m just really concerned about breaking something trying to learn!
@@yammmit bet you’ve got it all figured out now don’t you? That first to second gear switch is ass in these cars, my first manual too. They take a beating though so don’t worry about breaking shit and just remember if it doesn’t feel smooth somethings wrong.
Thank you for this. I’m planning on getting my own WRX this year and I’m so excited - this video is easy to follow and understand and I’m not as nervous now to learn.
Thank you much, my automatic car is in the stop and my husband is in the hospital and I have his WRX. I’m terrified to drive his car because.... it’s his baby. But I gotta get around and need a car. I’m gonna watch this over and over so I can drive it. I just gotta back it out of the garage
@@Angelmoreno-co7gi lol i just bought a 2013 WRX with a VERY vague idea how to drive it and managed to drive it straight to work from the dealership. I stalled it 5 times but every start gets smoother and smoother.
LOL, thanks for this! btw, you look like one of my co-workers! I'm currently learning in the STI I just bought since I have no other cars to practice in and the people I know who have manual cars live far away. I have someone who is teaching me and let me tell you, it's very nerve shaking, especially going uphill. You have to keep so many things in mind while not riding the clutch. Wish me luck! So far I've been driving around town trying to avoid uphill for now. Today, I may try an uphill to try and get comfortable with it. pheww! I get off my car nervous and sweaty. hahaha!
I just picked up my 2012 wrx hatch and I had a 2.5i hatch that was an automatic before this and I'm so excited to learn more. I drive manuals here and there at my job but I've never driven one myself with ease. I've wanted a wrx hatch since I was 12 and this is gonna be the best year. Getting to know my boy and how he drives.
I learned a couple years ago I bought a ford ranger without knowing and learned on that I’m picking up my first sti tomorrow figured I’d check if I’m doing it right lmao
Gr8 vid. I don't advise newbies to start out on a WRX as their 1st 6speed car tho. It's for more intermediate to advanced gearheads. Hondas & Corollas are more for beginners.
Peter Reeves I always keep it in neutral. One time I had it in reverse or 1st gear and I dumped the clutch... it launched me forward or backwards depending on which. Don’t ever do it lol
So your kind of slipping the clutch into second gear? I was doing that for the longest time until I just left out the clutch gently and then back on the gas.
So say ur in 4th gear and there’s a red light, can you immediately put the car in neutral or do u have to downshift to first then put the car in neutral?
Big Irv okay now I’m kinda getting a better understanding, now what if your going to turn into your street or into a parking lot or a store.. E.T.C and you don’t have to make a stop do you still have to put it in neutral?
OhEagle I would keep the clutch in and throw it to first gear while it’s still rolling because entering a driveway or store you’ll need to go at least 5mph. And give it a little gas so it doesn’t stop on you
Brated do you always do that? That's going to kill your clutch, especially in neutral because there's no need for the clutch to be down in neutral! You should never coast driving at speed letting the car slow - how does anyone behind you know the car is braking if you aren't applying the brakes and therefore lighting up your rear brake light?
Simply tap on the break then immediately down shift allow the car to settle , then down shift again and bring the car to a slower speed when approaching your stop or turn . I prefer to keep the car engaged in gear while approach a stop vs neutral . At the point of having the car in neutral you have little to no dynamic control at that point .
Putting yourself into neutral especially at that speed is so dangerous. Learn to revmatch downshift to engine brake. People who only rely on neutral and brakes are stupid and will never progress to be a better driver.
Do you have to take your foot off of the gas everytime you press the clutch to shift gears? My first time learning stick and it’s been giving me a lot of anxiety while driving..
Thank you for your help I had seizure but a month and half ago I had brain surgery so I just bought a 1989 Isuzu trooper I can start driving buy the end of next month but I'm going four more months to be sure I'm done with them but thank you for your help I cànt wait to get behind the wheel of it
Blast Processing I’d say 3-3500rpm so it doesn’t stalk so much next gear. Try to get used to feeling the car needing it’s gear changes. Also, it might be jerking more due to letting the clutch off too soon. Ease off it and ensure your giving it more gas

Wow I just got a wrx yesterday and this is the only video that made me understand. I’m learning in my car on my own so Thank you man 🙏❤️
When in FIRST GEAR release the clutch a bit(halfway) and listen to the BITING POINT , add gas then release clutch FULLY
In this car, this is a vast.y under rated comment 😅
This is what we needed to learn he explain everything big thanks to you
Thank you! I have no problem actually driving it, just starting it and getting the first bite point just right!

Yep I’m getting it in manual. I was looking at the automatic more I think about it the more I want a manual.

Dude thanks for this video I just got a wrx sti and I didn’t know how to reverse they didn’t tell me you lift up that knob I almost broke my shifter
So your kind of slipping the clutch into second gear? I was doing that for the longest time until I just left out the clutch gently and then back on the gas.
hoping to pick up an sti been watching videos on how to drive manual 😂🙏
Nice video man thank you!! Getting a wrx in a few weeks never drived manuel lool
bouta get a 2020 sti feelin a little better about makin the switch
So say ur in 4th gear and there’s a red light, can you immediately put the car in neutral or do u have to downshift to first then put the car in neutral?
Austin L77 neutral and get ur breaks ready. No need to down shift. You can practice that later
So basically I don’t have to learn how to downshift? Or I still need to learn how to for daily basis?
OhEagle yea it’s not a must. You can just throw it to neutral every time you going to stop.
Big Irv okay now I’m kinda getting a better understanding, now what if your going to turn into your street or into a parking lot or a store.. E.T.C and you don’t have to make a stop do you still have to put it in neutral?

Loved the way you explained it bro
im 12 and i dont have a driver's license but im watching this anyway
Okay but how do you come to a complete stop after doing ... say about 70 mph??????
He explained it. It’s downshifting. (Which is for more advanced drivers) but just slow down clutch in put it in neutral and just coast.
BRated downshifting for advanced drivers? Tf are u saying 😂

You should do a video on going up hill and down hill because going up hill for me is when anxiety starts beating at me
Most modern cars have hill assist, specifically STIs and WRXs for sure. Depending on trim, if you got a base model idk if they have it
This takes me back to 1986 when I learned to drive.
Thanks man now I can steal my neighbors Supra
Do you have to take your foot off of the gas everytime you press the clutch to shift gears? My first time learning stick and it’s been giving me a lot of anxiety while driving..
And do you have to press the clutch everytime you need to press the brake to slow down? Or can you just press the brake?
Damn that thing is badass bro
So if you're in 2nd/3rd/4th gear, you don't need to downshift to stop or slow down?
Thanks bro i learned how to drive stick
Wrx shift knob is sti’s shift???
So you have to step on the clutch when you brake too ?
When switching to 3rd or 5th. Do you let it go into neutral and then just push it up or do you actually move it up right up
Nice vid
Buying one soon feels like this video help so subing and like👌🏽

Quinton Lownsberry hey man I’m glad you’re doing better now and you’re getting ready to get back to driving! Stay safe out there.
Why the sti shift knob lol you regret the wrx purchase?
Is this the same transmission that they put in the Impreza?
Is it normal for it to jerk a little bit. I tried everything from slowly releasing the clutch to low rpm 1st and 2nd almost always jerks...
So each time you switch gears you let go of the gas peddle?
Yeah
Don’t forget R is for racemode
Rad colors bro, mine are tan/white
Love that car!
Ok….. now that I know how to shift gears the question still remains…. When?
Why does it look like his left shoe is a right shoe 😂

I leearned a lot from this video how to drive like that cuz I want to get the Subaru sti 🥺🤤
What rpm do you typically switch in.. I go up to 3000 am I doing that right? I still jerk the car when shifting
Blast Processing I’d say 3-3500rpm so it doesn’t stalk so much next gear. Try to get used to feeling the car needing it’s gear changes.
Also, it might be jerking more due to letting the clutch off too soon. Ease off it and ensure your giving it more gas

CLUTCH + BREAK + NEUTRAL then downshift to start again

No you clutch then gear then gas
Your supposed to give it gas once the car starts to roll and then slowly let off the clutch
That's how to stall the WRX
@@subscriber6181 thats true. wrx's are pretty hard to learn on in my experience, you have to let off the clutch very very slowly.
