    When I was a kid our elderly neighbor Mr. Jim had a plain homely looking Hawk with a 289 V8 and 4 on the floor. And he would use any excuse to drive that car. He really loved it.

    Lou I am a ford guy but this car just melts my heart. This car was way better looking than 58 and on T-bird. Ford turned the original idea into a tamk that couldn't get out of its own way. I would really like to own the supercharged 4 speed Gran Turismo. What a gorgeous car.

    My dad owned two Studebaker hawks - the first was an entry level white six cyl and the next was a GT like this one. Although they were snazzy for the time, they always seemed to me to be sort of the red headed step child of the automotive world and just one step away from being really cool.

    Lou, the resemblance to Mercedes, might be motivated by the fact Studebaker Corp. was importer and distributor of Mercedes-Benz motor cars for the US. Also an iteration of the front end was used in the British Hillmans since Baron Raymond Loewy designed some os their cars too. I humbly hope you like this tidbit of information, love your show and your excellent and candid approach to the craft of classic cars.

    I knew people that worked at Studebaker in South Bend. The rumor of the times is that Studebaker tried to replicate Thunderbird in some way. In order to understand truth no design engineers were EVER interested in other car company designs. Talk that smack now that they're all gone but sons and daughters and nieces and nephews are still kicking about. I kind of wonder if these days there are any die makers who can design angles on patterns without the aid of a computer like the fenders on a Studebaker had. I'll bet not.

    Very nice car. FYI te plate on the cowl is the body tag, not the serial number. 63VK means it's a 63 with a V8 (not necessarily 289) and the K means hardtop. The serial number tag is the stainless steel one on the door post that says "Studebaker Corporation" on it. And it's a serial number, not a VIN, they didn't come out until a few years later.

    Mercedes-Benz was distributed in the US by Studebaker until 1966. Many Studebaker-Packard dealers sold mb's and after the Studebaker discontinued car production many of their former dealers became MB dealers. So yes there was a styling and other connections between the two firms.

    Nice ride!!! 60th to boot. Nice gift!! Heck., i just at one time wanted a Fender Stratocaster for mine in '17 (MIM would have been fine) 12 guitars i can't hardly use now. Do recall going to Winterland in a friend of a friend's GT Hawk, this black with the tail fins, so earlier than this. The 'Great' Leslie West opening for Fooled Around era Elvin Bishop. 2 songs of that and we were gone. Just diidn't dig Mickey Thomas then. Stude had to be parked in the site lot. Had to 'bounce' a VW bug to leave. Cool times.

    My Gramps has this car also. May be the 62 actually, I forget. 3 on the column with overdrive with red top on black which is a factory colour I have been told. We took it to a car show and multiple people thought it was a Ford Gran Torino too! Too funny. I think I like the all red compared to the red on black personally. These Studebakers do have a nice little rumble out the the exhaust and the horizontal dual fishtail tips compliment the car extremely well, looks better in person!

    In mid '62 I ordered a Gran Turismo Hawk. The dealer told me I might want to wait for the '63 model as there would be some interesting options available! To make a long story short mine was one of, as I recall, less than 100 made with a R-3 304 CID supercharged Avanti engine! It was perfectly capable of pegging the 160 MPH speedometer. Very much a cruiser, very stable and held the road very, very well! Looked just like the Hawk in this video, except it was black with saddle tan interior! Put over 240,000 miles on it, sold it in '93, still running to a fellow who restored it! Regret doing that!

    • @ronfillmore281
      @ronfillmore281 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Negative! The 259 was never available in the Gran Turismos! Pre '62, yes! Starting in '63 a 289 with or with out supercharger, or a 304 with supercharger. I had one of those with 4 on the floor. Actually, there were two 289's available. The stock with 2 or 4 bbl, or the Avanti options. Those engines had some performance upgrades. Standard 289 with 4 bbl rated at 225 HP, which this car apparently has. Painted yellow valve covers is the give away. Avanti engines had chromed valve covers. Avanti R-1 289 with 4 bbl 250 HP, R-2 289 with supercharger close to 300. 304 supercharged R-3, which I had, HP was never officially stated. Suspect in excess of 350. Avanti optioned Hawks came with a 140 or 160 MPH speedometer depending on whether supercharged or not. I know this because I sat down with the dealer for some length of time going over the specs before I ordered mine with the R-3. I have no doubt that engine would have pegged the 160 MPH speedometer. It would hit 130+ easily.
