      Of its era?
      Maybe ever.
Studebaker was way ahead of its time. Remember, this body style was introduced in 1953 !

I’m in love with the body style. Looks like a Bentley from the side. Also the T bird used similar styling. A truly classy muscle car.

@@brendaleslie4117 I don’t understand how they weren’t more popular. Not sure how many were built or how comparable they costs compared to a Corvette or T bird of that era.

The view of that car from the back and side was incredible. Probably the best and most unique I have ever seen. For $1000, it had to be a bucket of rust. Those old Studebakers with the 289 were the best sounding cars... the exhaust .

I love it. This brings back so many memories of my old man's GT Hawk. His was a metallic sky blue with the R1 engine. I have many childhood memories of him and that car, trips to the drive in movies, road trips ETC... a great car. sadly, it was a casualty of the violence in KCMO in 68. But the old man swore by that car until the day he died.

One of the most beautiful vehicles ever built! I have had several 1964 Golden Hawks as well as many modified Larks and realize they never got the respect they deserved. What a shame Studebaker was forced out of business. Thanks for your detailed job on that Hawk. 😊

What a gorgeous car. An amazing find and an A+ restoration. The owner was an articulate and knowledgeable interview. Lou thanks for zooming in on his cruise in plaque that contained so much information. I like that you asked him how long the restoration took and his luck in finding the exact wire wheels on Ebay. You started to ask what the most difficult parts to find for the restoration and then got distracted. I wish that question had been answered. As always thank you for finding and including so many rare cars on your show. If you were not doing this who would be chronicling this automotive history?

SO TRUE I lived in MILTON ONTARIO CANADA in the late 60s a friend of mine had a GRAN TURISMO , a guy with a 442 Oldsmobile tried to race him ! I was with my friend in his Studebaker, and we left him in the dust ! Probably the fastest car i was ever riding in ! True story ! It had a standard transmission ! WOW ! What a mover ! It was gold color with a black top ,beautiful car ! I am not sure but I think it was either a 62 or 63 !

My childhood "girlfriend" lived next door to me. Her dad was a petroleum engineer, and flew all over a 3 state area in his job. His wife was ok with him flying about, but not with him having a fast car. No super sports, no Chevelle, no fuelie cars, etc. Enter the Hawk Gran Turisimo.
Mr. Wood bought a triple black '64, with a 4 speed and power everything, and opted for those wire wheels. A more sexy car I'd never seen. It was a normally aspirated R1.
He got away with it because Studebaker was known to his wife for building conservative vehicles. I rode in it a couple times. It was NOT conservative.
    Thanks for this story.

A barn find that has great individual Brook Stevens auto history, HOW COOL IS THAT!!!
    Definitely one of a kind.
    Thanks for sharing the video.
Side note; The later production 1963 R-2 hawks opted for a 160 MPH speedometer, I know cuz I have 1 of those 277 4 speed Hawks produced with the Paxton supercharger and the 160 speedo. Second side note; most Studebaker owners have more than one Studebaker.

Your car is just amazing, congratulations on all your hard work bringing her back to the beauty she once was these cars were simply the best. I bought a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk in 1964 with the Packard 352 supercharged engine with Stewart Warner gages i got it from a doctor who kept it in a garage and never went out in winter, my Hawk was prisine like your car and it was the very best i owned. Unfortunately for me i parked on a street one night visiting a friend and a drunk driver hit my Hawk and totally destroyed it. I could afford to restore it and i miss my Hawk to this day. Take good care of that Grand Turisimo, shes one of a kind and i hope you have her for many yeàrs to come. Thanks for sharing her with us.

From the dealer's lot to the barn, then the awesome event!!! This engine just sounds like any classic car engine. The sounds of a dream! Fact: For 1963 the car was slightly restyled, with refinements to the front, sides, and rear. Round parking lights below the headlights replaced the previous rectangular ones, set into the corners of the newly closed side grilles that bore a squared pattern of lines over fine mesh. This same squared mesh pattern was carried over onto the main grille, replacing the simple fine mesh of the 1962 models. Early in 1963 production the parking light bezels were changed and the right side of the dash became woodgrain, matching the area around the instruments. The doors had red, white, and blue emblems added next to the Gran Turismo emblems, and at the rear, the aluminum overlay's colors were reversed and red, white, and blue were added to the Hawk emblem on the top of the trunk lid. Inside, 1963 Hawks have vertical pleats in the seat upholstery, replacing the 1962's horizontal pleats, and have far superior vinyl, John.

The fact that Studebaker couldn't afford to invest in all new body stamping dies every couple of years is what made the fin-less version of this car appeal to me so much back when, as a teenager, I couldn't begin to afford any new car. It just had the look of a classic fresh off the showroom floor and still keeps it. Raymond Loewy just had the knack for aesthetics. What I couldn't afford then I sure as hell couldn't afford now. Lucky Hawk because I'd have to drive the wheels off of it so everybody could see me in it

@@jakekaywell5972 Gettin' rid of those hideous tailfins took it back more to the elegant lines of a '56 Power Hawk for me. The fins might've been a marketing decision by Studebaker and I'm not one to second guess anybody in a marketing business. But they would've been a disqualifier for me . . . If I weren't too "poverty stricken" to have ever bought one that is. Brook Stevens only had to know what time it was. It was finally time to get rid of those stupid tailfins.

Wow, one look at the B pillar and it looked close to my 63 tbird I had done in red and the door trim is close the panels on the doors that flowed from the inner cowls to the rear side window area . My neighbour bought an older Porsche sports version at a good price to restore, but there was a special VIN code that didn't match what the seller said about it. He checked with a Porsche Club and he had a rare version of the car for the engine .
The Studebaker plant in Hamilton Ontario kept making cars until March 1966 but the South Bend engine supply line to canada stopped in 64 and he GM canada engines were priced higher than calculated for and profits were thin and production dropped to about 2000 from for the 66 where 900 workers lost their jobs.

I had a 63 GT with the thunderbolt engine in the 1990's, the thunderbolt was the 289 with a 2 barrel carb and the R1 was 289 with a different cam with higher compression pistons and a four barrel carb then there was the R2 with the paxton super charger which had lower compression and vented the engine differently to reduce internal pressures I also had the studebaker shop manual which had to be 6 to 8 inches thick and had everything in it, that was probably more valuable then the car. I was really surprised with how wide the V was the cylinders leaned way out from each other most motors the crank being at 6 oclock the cylinders would be roughly 2 and 10 this engine was more like 3 and 9 and had a intake like pontiac motors with the tubes. Never did get it road worthy and sold it for like under 1000 it wasn't in really bad shape and if I remember right I think it had fiber glass front fenders, crager wheels and a hurst 4 speed it was a really cool car.

The final year facelift of the GT Hawk, Studebaker finally found the money to redesign the deck lid eliminating the horizontal ribs that had originally appeared on the '56 Hawk models. Stevens had wanted to do away with that dated detail and filled in the cove with a stainless plate (a stamped and painted waffle pattern for '62 and the cleaner brushed panel for '63), and the '64 model had the painted smooth vertical panel at the trailing end.
Given the shoestring budget, Stevens pulled a very frisky rabbit out of a very shabby hat.
I believe total retooling costs in modifying the befinned and curvy '61 Hawk to the more modern "formal" GT hawk for '62 came in under $10k, the change left over from the budget for redesigning the bread-and-butter Lark models.
Half of Studebaker's redesign budget for the '62 model year went to designing and negotiating production of the Avanti, designed by the team of John Ebstein, Bob Andrews, and Tom Kellogg under supervision by Raymond Loewy.
I read that Loewy was furious when he saw the GT Hawk with the formal roof over the '53-vintage lower body sheet metal.
Stevens also reskinned the Willis Aero for the Brazilian market, squaring up the fenders and roofline.
He also penned a proposed restyle of the Argentine Kaiser _Carabela_ said restyle never reaching production, but like the GT Hawk, the design achieved an almost all-new look with minimal modification to most of the body panels.

Hey Lou. Lovely looking Studebaker. I've always loved pre-62 Studebaker Hawks, but I also love 1962 and later Studebaker GT Hawks. :)

It is indeed. I remember seeing one in person a few years ago. I wish I could've talked to the owner about the car. It was parked in a parking lot, and the owner was in a store shopping, so I didn't. Oh well. :)

Always liked the hawks the styling was way ahead of there time and they had 289 ford and small block chevrolet. Motors some of the best motors ever made.

Yeah, you're wrong. The 289 in that Hawk was Studebaker's own design. Nothing at all alike to the Ford unit. Chevy engines wouldn't come into play until the 1965-1966 model years either.

The only New Car my father ever bought was a 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk. It had the non-supercharged Avanti Engine and was Automatic Transmission. He went right to the factory in Hamilton, Ontario to pick it up. There were very few 1963 Hawks sold in my area that year.
