I had this playing on my speaker while I was in my local Sainsbury's a few days ago. The African security guy walked past and asked are you listening to Fela Kuti? The following conversation went on for about 30minutes. The conversation was concluded about forgiveness. I've gone through hell in the last few weeks and this security guard told me that you have to forgive people, even if they have harmed you and you did nothing to deserve it. Thanks Fela Kuti and to the security guard

I grew up with Fela's songs from his days with his first band Koola Lobitos in the 60s to his later band Africa 70 which marked the start of Afro Beat as we know it. I watched him perform in the old Kalakuta shrine and he often featured on the TV in Lagos. He is an amazing and unique performer to watch. Apart from his singing and ability to compose music that ordinary people can relate to, his musical skills with trumpet, saxophone and electric piano, as well as his dancing skills, is second to none. There is no other musician like Fela in the world and there will never be. He was an African and indeed an International musical genius and a legend who took on the Nigerian Army, Police, Politicians and the Government with his songs like no-one, musician or no musician, has ever done or will ever do. I am still so much enjoying his music to this day and always will. Thank you Fela for standing up for the ordinary people and leaving us some amazing music that will last forever. May your soul rest in peace!!

Fela was a genius who was waisted by narrow minded politicians who had no future plans for the continent of Africa. What he was preaching, is true today as it was then, but as usual those who live ahead of their time will always suffer in the sight of ignorance. Fela suffered the faith of great men like Nkrumah, Gabby, ML King, and so many others. He was misunderstood almost entirely across the board.

My 5 year old, special needs loves this. Decided to expose my kids to every music possible - bluegrass/afrobeat/reggae/rock/folk/funk/grunge/jazz. I consider this music a ritual of sound and rhythm. It opens mind and flexes thought. Of course, have to explain why he is singing 'Bend your yansh like Black man' at pre-school..hah. Don't care. Sadly, 99% of Americans have never heard of Fela so makes for good conversation

the greatest .....a real genius.....I just NEVER get tired of Fela's music.....Like Ginger Baker, I am a white guy who really really grooves to the beats of all African music ....I always wanted to be a drummer like him, listened to Cream and Blind Faith nonstop when I was a kid in the 60's...and grew up with rock n roll..all my life... sang in a rock band when I was 16...and then learned guitar....I discovered African music about the same time as I first heard Peter Tosh, the first reggae music I ever heard....1979 at a Rolling Stones concert....where Peter opened up for the Stones , and quite frankly, BLEW THEM OUT OF THE WATER......It took the crowd about an hour to calm down....and only then, the Stones came out on stage..AMAZING POWER and energy he had....Fela had the same kind of Power, just directed in a different style...I still feel like I could learn the drums if I only had the means.....I'd LOVE to get a kit....and practice with this music....I LOVE IT SO.....SO MUCH.....

@M T wow.....you are so hostile. unreal.....This is the 5th time now in a row, that I have typed a reply to you here , and it keeps getting deleted cause I am so upset, and I am typing too fast, and I accidentally push the wrong button on my keyboard, which deletes all I typed......So, this time , I may not include all I want to say to you , but it's all I can tolerate typing all over again, just to try to not be "misunderstood" by you, or anyone else, and to make my point more clear....after having my words twisted around by you......RE READ MY WORDS SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY CLEAR MEANING....I never said anything..not 1 word.... about "Black" music......I was talking about real "African" music......and, also, Reggae music, obviously, from Jamaica...I know Peter was from Jamaica....not from Africa.....EVERYONE knows that... so do not try to talk down to me as if I am a dumb "white guy" who knows nothing... Peter did write a song that said, "No matter where you come from, as long as your'e a Black Man, your'e an African"...Remember that song??? You OBVIOUSLY missed the point of his song.....You, and me, I think , are actually "coming from the same place", as far as "racial issues" are concerned, but you seem to want to be an adversary, trying to shove my "white" face into the dirt, putting me down, because you are offended, for some reason, that I happen to love African or Reggae music, and I happen to a "white guy" ( yes ,just like Ginger Baker).and you turn that around into thinking that I seek your "credit" to have my own personal view, and to freely express it........and, you think, therefore, do not have "the right" to do so, or to even talk about it. and that... is so fucked up....Truth is, most "white people" do not EVER listen to "African" music, from the Continent of Africa...especially those in the USA.....Fela may have tried to overcome the racial divide, but he had no success of that in the USA....where I grew up for 60 yrs, as i never ONCE heard his music played on the radio ...Peter was able to break through the race wall, because he was first made well known just from being with Bob Marley, but he REALLY got famous when he opened for the Stones in the world tour they did in 1979.....where I discovered him....and discovered Reggae music...Before that time , I had never heard Reggae music.....not even Bob Marley...who became very popular in UK, but not in the USA.........It just was not ever played on the radio.....never......When Bob was living in the USA, he was stuck working at a night factory job, and selling door to door.....NO ONE knew about him.....But all that changed , once they heard him on a TV show, in the UK, which launched his career into outer space.........and he was made very VERY famous, enjoying a few good years before he died.....Peter would still be a big sensation too, today, had he not been murdered..assassinated....But , like Bob, at least he got to enjoy the sweetness of being a well known artist , for a few years, in his case, thanks to the Stones getting him to open all their concerts in the late 70's...It's probably the only really good thing Mick ever did in his entire life.. I hope you understand where I am coming from here.......I am not now, nor have I ever , sought your approval, acceptance, or permission, or validation, or "credit" , as you say, to love that music, or to talk about it......I HATE RACISM......REALLY....REALLY HATE IT......and I resent it , when I feel it being directed at me..

No other entity on this planet before or since can measure up to this Majestic Mozart, Ravel, Miles, Dylan, Billie, Sarah, Ella, Joni, Mingus like the Brother Fela. No one. Don't even think about it. Just tap your toes, nod your heads and Smile...🤗👍🏽😉

This recording is great...really feels like you are on a stage, area mic capture or something. I worked for a world francophone music festival in my hometown as a stage tech, Festival Internationale de Louisiane. I can close my eyes and feel the rumble from the stage. Nothing like the feeling in your chest from a good horn section.

His lyrics are just simple. He did not seem to write music poetically. He just went with the lead guitar and pilee words after words and finally its a song you will listen to. Rest in power king

At this period he wasn't politically engaged that's why... Other tracks like beast of no nations or coffin for head of state are more technical and better structured lyrically.
