    What is important to notice is that the wilderness "make" Jackie eatable. Throwing the snow on her body and pushing the wind toward the cabin. Taissa's accident was provoked by her other self. This show is so good at puting little supernatural effect without making it fully supernatural. My theory is that it's some kind of collective hallucinations

    • @hannahremmel9550
      @hannahremmel9550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Fire burning under trees heavy with snow. Snow melts/falls onto body cooking said body. They’re starving. There’s nothing supernatural there at all. The feast is a way to disassociate from what they’re actually doing.

      @@aaronmoyano2340 we sa the teddy bear but it could just have been the plane being so old it simply exploded, as for the birds there is multiple scientific reason they could have died. As I said in my original comments they do an amazing job at making it supernatural but also not. We might never know of something supernatural was with them or if their mind invented it to excuse/justify what they had to do. It's part of what makes this show so amazing, for now we have some answers but also behind each answer hide another question, just incredible writing

    The showrunners do a fantastic job keeping the viewers guessing. Is it supernatural or is it a response to the trauma, isolation, and months of existing solely in survival mode? Lottie's visions are the only thing that seem to be clearly real, but we are seeing them from her point of view, and we know most of these characters are unreliable narrators. Are the visions supernatural, or are they a symptom of unmedicated schizophrenia? I think it does a great job of connecting the viewers to the characters, by giving us a little taste of how confused and unsure they are about everything that's happening. I am obsessed with this show and I love your reactions! Thank you both!

    • @ColonelGreen
      @ColonelGreen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When they get to the point where Lottie's touch is giving other people visions, it's hard to come up with a 'real' explanation for that.

    • @okielady73
      @okielady73 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ColonelGreen Given unreliable narrators and the trauma of the crash and everything since, I still question if any of the visions are really happening to them. It certainly seems supernatural, but there could be a logical explanation for most of what's going on. I like not knowing for sure, at least for now.
      Some of them could be just the way the writers choose to show the inner thoughts of a person. I don't think Travis really saw a vision of Lottie when he was having sex with Natalie. I think he was envisioning it in his head, but not seeing it with his eyes. Same with Shauna "seeing" Jackie. I think she's just imagining what Jackie would say or do, how their conversations would progress, if she actually were there. I don't know these things for sure, obviously, but that's the way I'm interpreting some of it.

    • @ColonelGreen
      @ColonelGreen ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@okielady73 Why would Lottie touching Travis' chest cause him to suddenly have a vision of the tree where she sacrificed the bear's heart? To cite one instance.
      I would say the series has moved way beyond the point where there's any plausible explanation for what we're seeing that isn't supernatural.

    • @okielady73
      @okielady73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ColonelGreen That's valid. I'm not shut off from that possibility. I just don't trust that everything we're shown is reality. I'm not ready to say one way or the other yet.

      i agree, especially with the latest episodes, with the adults, whenever they mention something about the wilderness, that the wilderness did this or was controlling them, its always a situation that they couldve prevented or that they themselves started in the first place. its like theyre shifting the blame onto this entity they created of the wilderness to cope with their trauma. because theyre all SO traumatised and not mentally well at all, just like how lottie has unreliable visions, the others could easily have them too (ofc lotties is due to her schizophrenia so it'll be more severe and frequent)
      you are definitely right that it can all just be explained by trauma, idk if you've seen the latest ep but im assuming it gets worse and they become more primal and aggressive, cant cope with their actions and therefore displace that guilt onto the wilderness making them do it. the brain is a very powerful organ and the way it can distort and repress memories to protect itself could be what the girls are experiencing

    I don't know if I would characterize it as a "celebration" of cannibalism. the 'feast' was their way of coping with what had to be done. at this point they are so out of their minds with hunger and the smell of the cooked meat was too much to ignore, but they still didn't want to eat their friend and fellow human being so the showrunners came up with the feast as a way to visualize how the girls had to warp their minds to rationalize and legitimize the act of eating her. it's also as another person mentioned drawing parallels to Greek and Roman mythology. I also like how it hints toward supernatural but keeps you guessing.

    Welcome to the Snackie episode!
    On a more serious note, I see this show as having different levels of reading, there's the surface level of the supernatural horror show, then there's the one step deeper level of how this is all a response / collective hallucination to trauma and mental illness.
    Then you start thinking about how religions and folklore were born, when small communities found themselves in dire situations with no help and no scientific explanation and had to turn to the supernatural for comfort, and so humanity tries to elevate itself by rituals - you can see it here in the juxtaposition between the gross visuals of the actual cannibalism and how they see it in their heads, like an ancient bacchanal; there's the connection about those matriarchal religions of the past, so much more feral and visceral, with Lottie as the priestess for the Goddess of Fertility, Mother Earth and so on.
    And then you can go even deeper, because these rituals were a way to deal with the human condition, and these girls find themselves in is such a petri dish of humanity, their growing up pains brought to the extreme, and so it becomes a powerful metaphor for adolescence, especially female adolescence, the trauma and wilderness and violence of it, and how women are supposed to go back to society and live as nothing happened while stile carrying the wilderness within them.
    Of course we still don't know how the show's gonna end so I might be wrong but this is where I'm at right now.

    • @3IruAW
      @3IruAW ปีที่แล้ว

      So anyway I'm sorry, my English is getting good but I'm still having some trouble with more abstract talk. What I mean is, there are four levels or reading, the supernatural, the psychological, the historical and the societal.
      I'm really excited to keep watching the show with you guys, your reactions are genuine and funny, down-to-earth and deep at the same time. Keep going!

    The feast is called a bacchanal, it's a feast of excess, bachannalia is basically a state of going to the extreme with pleasures of the flesh, be it food, wine or sexy times. In this, they basically had a collective hallucination of that state of extreme hunger just taking over. A couple things - first, I really don't think there is actually anything supernatural happening at all. I think there are quite a few things that give off the appearance of being supernatural, but I think all of it can ultimately be explained by a combination of mental illness, isolation, extreme conditions (cold and particularly hunger), and trauma.
    Second, if I were trapped in a cabin in the woods, with no food, in the middle of winter, and dying of starvation was a genuine possibility... yes, I absolutely would eat a person. I like to think I wouldn't go so far as to outright kill someone, but a person who died of exposure or natural causes, absolutely without question. Meat is meat, calories are calories, and calories are vital to survival.

    I think Callie has been having a fake id for some time. Getting into that club in NYC, she vapes like an addict, etc. I HATE her but I also appreciate the realistic writing of her. Her mom is so checked out she behaves like she is desperate for attention, and an honesty from her mom. That must have been her reality for some time before S1E1, you know?
    People tend to stay (emotionally) at the age they were when trauma occurred. Callie has a checked out 17 year old mom, and she herself is that age. I get the resentment, acting out, acting like she is her mom's peer, etc. It doesn't make her one bit more likable to me, but I appreciate the writing of it all. Shauna (and too a degree, Jeff) created the monster. And as time goes on (not a spoiler since you have already finished the season) she shows her willingness to partake in activities that put her freedom at risk, following her mom's lead. She is an obnoxious witch but she is a product of Shauna's bad parenting. Shauna treats her like a peer. Why on earth wouldn't she think and act like she is?

    "Technically, within the show's canon, Crystal has been there the whole time, but the character and actor weren't actually in season one."
    Said Google when I asked if crystal was there in season one... Cuz in the season 1 trailer there is like more than a dozen girls holding hands around the graves I remember and I couldn't place any faces except like main 7 speaking actresses.. so there was quite a few people that were like extras but the actual actress Crystal wasn't there so she was played by somebody else as an extra... Probably an actor who makes less money and less auditions and real life I guess I have no idea.
    It is kind of messed up because its Showtime so they should have prepared better if they wanted to introduce new people in the next season they should have got higher paid actor extras or whatever because they had to have had a big enough budget unless it all went to the adult actors... And how often is a premium channel only have one season they had to have known it would be renewed just because of the originality of it and it's Showtime so they can show all the triggered shit and don't shit gore and whatnot.

    Regarding the "supernatural" stuff discussed at the end of vid. I think the show is taking creative license and being gratuitous with character POVs and coincidental timing trying to convince the audience that the supernatural is involved. If it were more subtle it would be effective but they're perhaps trying TOO hard... its one of the worst flaws of this season. They told us this is a female Lord of the Flies - that's not a supernatural story. Its about psychological trauma and the dark side of groupthink and that's more than enough.

      They never actually said this was a female Lord of the Flies, they just said that's where the idea came from..even if they do confirm it as supernatural (which I dont think they will, they seem to want to keep it ambiguous) that doesnt cancel out any of the exploration of trauma, supernatural tropes have been used as metaphors for a long time, they're also dealing with spirituality/religion and why people hold onto these things....I also think it's weird how people are surprised that the supernatural elements have been ramped up, when it's the only thing that makes sense from a narrative perspective in order to get to that first scene in the pilot, even if you dont believe it, THEY have to

      There are supernatural interpretations of Lord of the Flies, though....it's literally in the title lmao 😂

    I’m kind of confused why you guys don’t like the supernatural stuff so much. Mind explaining?

    Is it just me or was the woman at Sammy’s school unnecessarily bitchy? To say “we’re not a boarding school” would really only be appropriate if they let him sit around 18:07 there after school all the time. That said: I was really looking forward to you guys’ reaction to this specific episode & you didn’t disappoint. 😃

    I think they are all hallucinating from hunger and stress.
