Seeing her in this show was the first NYC Broadway show I ever saw. It was a religious experience. Her voice is otherworldly. This performance changed my life. I remember leaving the theater with my mother completely speechless. We walked several blocks in complete silence just taking in knowing we were not the same people who entered that theater after seeing her performance.
I just love how emotional he gets when reviewing some of these, because that's what theater is supposed to do! It's so powerful and universal and important and beautiful and it's amazing. I love musicals
I had the pleasure of seeing this show in previews. I knew very little about Cynthia Erivo going in. The first note she sang, a little lullabye, in the show, you could tell that she had an absolutely amazing voice even in that quiet moment and I knew I was going to be blown away. By the end of Act I I knew she would win the Tony. By the end of the show I knew the show was going to win the Tony. It was the first time I ever felt moved to give a standing ovation in the middle of a show. My "I hate musicals" husband spontaneously stood in the moments before "I am here" ended (the whole audience did). One of the most amazing experiences of my life I wish I could re-experience again and again. The kicker is, it wasn't like Cynthia was the only amazing performer in this show! The entire cast was incredible and during the last song and curtain call, everybody and I mean everybody, the cast and the audience, had tears in their eyes. It was such an amazing shared emotional moment between performers and audience and an example of how live theater is so transformative. Thank you Cynthia and thank you for making this video.
I saw this play on Broadway and a grown man, with a tough guy persona, sitting next to me broke down in tears and sobbed during this performance. The lyrics alone are moving so when someone like Cynthia brings it to life, it’s pretty much just like eff your feelings 😩😩😩
i was honoured enough to see her before the broadway transfer, when it was showing in London at the mernier chocolate factory theatre. could you imagine this show but in the round, only 180 seater, and she sings this 5 metres away from me, it was one of the most intimate, haunting , and memorable performances i've ever witnessed. She's just a gift and this whole show is spectacular.
Me: I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.. Marc starts to tear up... Me: Damn it, I’m not fine, I’m not fine, IM NOT FINE, MARC YOU’RE NOT HELPING, IM NOT FIIIIIINE.
Marc Daniel Patrick No, Sir, don’t apologize. I would be bawling too if I hadn’t seen it a couple times. I love that Musical Theater can move us at the verge of tears. Speaks to my heart, and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. #TheatreKidFeelings
I was in New York in 2018 and was fortunate enough to see The Color Purple in its Broadway run and I'm telling you that Cynthia's performance was so powerful and emotional that there was not a single noise from the audience while she was belting out this song. It felt like everyone was holding onto every note and words. Then the applause - so deafening! Amazing!
Cynthia is such perfection... Her talent is outstanding and, judging by interviews I’ve seen, such a beautiful soul... She did win an Emmy so she’s just an Oscar away from an EGOT... She’s got a “GET” as Terrell said LOL
I love cynthia erivo. I knew her coz she's one of the few non-hamilton nominee who won a tony that year. I needed to search for her coz she must be a super amazing actress.
Such a beautiful song, and wonderful reaction! Regarding the “your body doesn’t know the difference between acting and not acting” I saw a video in which she talks about how she gets asked to sing that song for appearances a lot, and she usually will turn it down, because to get into the headspace to sing that song 8 times a week, she had to internalize all of the dismissal and hatred that Celie faced and that took a toll on her mental health. It was super interesting. Anywho, I loved your reaction!
You said it. "This is why we go to see live musical theater". It's sitting in the back of the theater when Cynthia melts your face with "HERE!!!". It's Amber Grey growling what her name is, "Our lady of the Underground". It's Christine Dwyer, with tears in her eyes, belting that she'll NEVER do a good deed "AGAIN!!". It's a gift given, 8 times a week. Hope to receive that gift again soon!
I like it that you were talking about vocal technique almost as much as you were about the acting. Please continue to balance it like that. Thank you. I do appreciate your channel for talking about acting, that's not something we get a lot of on TH-cam so far. Thanks again.
It is the channel I am attempting to build here. Reactions that look at everything that goes into a musical theatre performance beyond just the vocals. Thank you for the support!
I saw this on Broadway in 2015 or 2016 and seeing it live is something else. I took my parents to the show when they came to visit me and my dad, who doesn't like musicals, complained before we got there. By the end he was in love with Cynthia's voice. He still talks about "that little girl with that powerful voice" 6 years later.
It’s hard to keep a strong composure during this performance because it is so powerful and it resonates with so many who have been victims of domestic violence, bullying and discrimination it’s like praising god for allowing you to wake up each day and for giving you the strength to keep on moving even when it seems like the world is against you
One of the most incredible performances I have ever seen. She also sang this live WHILE SITTING DOWN on the Terrell show (on youtube). It is so mind boggling how someone can be so talented and make everyone feel the pain the character is going through.
I had the absolute privelage of seeing her performance during my first trip Broadway and I still consider it to be at the pinnacle of live musical theatre performance. She pulls you so deeply into the character and you're so engrossed and engaged that you don't even notice that you're on your feet until you feel the thundering of the crowd. Incredible.
Also, P.S. I'm glad YT recommended this channel! I love watching performance reaction videos, but most of them are by Vocal Coaches who concentrate mostly on vocal technique and don't really dig into the things that make musical theatre so wonderful. There's a huge difference between singing and musical theatre singing, and not everyone understands that. I've seen shows where everyone is like WOW YAY SO GOOD AMAZING and I'm sitting there going ?????BUT WHERE WAS THE EMOTION AND CHARACTER
I had to go back and watch this over and over. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing this show. I am ashamed to say, I haven’t even heard the soundtrack before. This reaction video will make me change that...TODAY! Now let’s talk about this wonderful performance...OH MY. GOD!!! I can’t see how any performance could be any better! The truth came through this performance! It made me feel like I’ve seen the whole show because she took us through the whole show in the on-going transformation she expresses. At the end when she starts “and most of all...” that was the moment I started to cry. Her repeating “I’m beautiful” I was shouting “yes girl...you are beautiful,” And then she digs deep and says “I’m here!” and I felt it to my very soul! Thank you for taking us through the walk! It became a whole new voice in itself! Thank you for sharing this!!!
I quite like the simplicity though, because there’s so much already to focus on in these videos that I often feel like I need to watch them twice... I get torn between watching Marc’s reactions and watching what he’s reacting to 😅
Cynthia Erivo is pure silk gliding across all your senses. Not just your auditory senses, but every sense. She makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and I get goosebumps when I hear her beautiful voice and feel the passion as she delivers those faultless notes. She is a priceless diamond. She has the 4C's that a priceless diamond should have. A Cutting voice, A Colourful tone, Clarity in her lyrics, and all delivered with a weight of 100000 Carats. She is absolutely priceless. I urge everyone to check out her performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. She sings a tribute to all the old soul and jazz divas. A captivating and truly mesmerising performance. Have a watch of this. Copy the URL below. She will blow you away. Thank you Marc for your fantastic review and beautiful, heartfelt comments. I could see from your reaction that this performance by Cynthia brought tears to your eyes and a lump in your throat. It did exactly the same to me. In fact, it does every time I watch it. Thank you.
I watch this video, specifically, everyday. As a musician, I appreciate your diagnosis of this performance, but more so being vulnerable enough to be wrapped up into the emotion of it. Thank you for your realness.
Thank you for reviewing this song... I agree with your assessments from this performance. I worked in the theater and got to watch the show many times. There was never a time I didn't cry! I knew that everytime I got assigned to this show, I would experience an emotional cleansing from all the crying. Many songs from this show did that. One in particular was the last song, "The Color Purple Reprise". I always liked to watch that number from the back of the orchestra level. I would always hear sniffling & see people wiping away tears. It was such a bonding experience. I never got to meet Cynthia when I was working there, but one time I came to the theater as a patron, and upon leaving, there she was, 1 or 2 doors away, standing on the sidewalk like a regular person! I know we're all 'regular people', but to have a talent like hers, and be the star of the show, and just nonchalantly standing there on the sidewalk amongst everyone coming & going... she seemed very humble to me. I even got to take a picture with her! I miss the theater during this shutdown. 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing. And so jealous you had the opportunity to experience this show on almost a nightly basis. This is actually something an acting teacher of mine ingrained in his students. When the show is over, you take your bow, take off your work clothes and go home. Basking in the glory of what you just achieved on stage, means nothing if you cant come back the next night and do it again. I would like to think this was her approach when you saw her humbly standing on the street corner.
The video of her final performance is epic. The cracks, the emotion, the redemption of the performance is amazing. If it doesn't make you cry, then you are just broken
Oh man, I was there with you... I was there with her. I have loved that performance for forever now. The feels. That right there is what life is truly all about.
After hearing Cynthia perform this a few years ago, I was inspired and decided to perform it myself. Let me just say, this is a very hard song. She makes it look effortless but it’s probably the hardest song I’ve attempted, just due to the emotion that goes behind the lyrics and using the chest voice to portray them. She did an AMAZING job.
Still the greatest vocal performance I’ve ever heard live. I saw the show twice and both times, this moment was transcendent and she got a standing ovation each time. It was just the best.
I have watched Cynthia sing this song in different vids on TH-cam over and over ... she grabs you with her voice and those words and just doesn't let you go. Takes you into another realm! This vid is of one of the most spectacular vocal performances on Broadway ever! Love how it effected you emotionally Mark ... it showed in your face and eyes ... I was right there with you. 💕👍💕
Ugh. I feel this, there are so many songs in musical theater that make me cry, EVERY SINGLE TIME. thank you for letting us theater geeks see someone who is so entrenched in this world still live for these moments.
@@MarcDanielPatrick its true I have seen Les Mis at least 10 times since I was 16, I'm much older now ;-) but On My Own brings me back to every time someone didn't love me back, it hurts and breaks your heart but you still love and try again, that is the magic of MT.
you are a performer's dream audience 💖 you are so open to whatever comes your way, let the emotions wash over you and react whole heartedly to what you see and hear, whilst recognizing the hard labour that went into the performance you watch and providing criticism from a place of love and the desire to help make an already wonderful performance/artist even better! thank you ☺️
Merch idea: a T-shirt that says “I sometimes mouth the words” or some of the masks that they make for singers... the ones that let you open your mouth so you can articulate the words properly. I love the idea of the master classes. Also, I love these videos!
I'm going to need you to review some Book of Mormon performances or something with comedy, because I can't keep sobbing with love and joy every couple days. But then it's exactly as you described, it's incredible that people go to this place eight times a week and feel those feels. It's absolutely incredible.
I’ve watched this a few times❤️ my favorite of her songs, and you just say exactly what needs to be said! You gave her space and commented at the perfect times. Genius. This song is just 🙌
Marc, I was so fortunate to see Ms. Erivo as Celie and one of my teen/adult idols Jennifer Holliday as Shug in this show from the 6th row. I paid full price (and I NEVER pay full price). I was a sobbing mess by the end of this number/show. This show! These women! SO powerful. Thank you SO very much for this reaction!
Hey Gary, thank you so much for sharing. What a great experience. Full Price - haha, I can relate. I spent years jumping in on student rush tickets during my University years. 😂
This was the last show I saw before moving out of NYC. It was the best musical theater performance I had ever witnessed. I still lose my sh*t every time I watch it. When a song is acted so well like this, you see what we should always strive for as artists, and when you can achieve it, it will stay with many of the people who saw it FOREVER. I think Odom in "Wait For It' brings the same high bar in his performance.
Fully cried with you on this Marc... I WISH I had the opportunity to see this show... this song alone has such an impact... I wonder what the rest is like! THANK YOU for being a grown man and crying and not being ashamed of it. So many men think they shouldn't cry. You can't help but show emotion with this !!!
I saw this on Broadway, first row on Christmas Night and it was the Best Female Broadway performance I have ever seen. Not to mention the show was amazing. I have never heard such silence in a theatre and I have NEVER heard the power of someone’s voice echo off the walls and ceiling…she is absolutely amazing.
I have watched but never committed before and I just want to say thank you. I watch to learn to appreciate musical theater more and I have never seen this show and I am so moved by this performance and to see your reaction match mine shows that I am not alone or crazy in my joy and my desire to learn and understand more.
Thank you Marc for your beautiful and honest reaction. I literally had an out of body experience when I saw the Color Purple on Broadway. I never cry in public and after this performance I was a blubbering mess along with the entire audience. Cynthia Erivo's depiction of Celie was so raw, poignant and struck an emotional chord that had my heart in the palm of her hand from beginning till end.
I just love it when others get emotional when listening to music. Sometimes I feel people don’t understand that emotion from music when they are stone faced and I have just ugly cried. This is what music....this is what theatre gives people. It is such a gift and the emotion is just raw and deep.
The first time I saw this video of Cynthia Erivo singing her heart out for "I'm Here" made me tear up so bad. This is an amazing and out of this earth experience which I had hoped I was able to see live when it's showing. This made me miss acting in theatre so bad. Thank you Marc Daniel Patrick for this reaction. You just earned me as a new subscriber.
The emotion I felt watching you watch her was riveting. I can tell you love the theater and the force that Cynthia is🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 you need to react to her singing “I’m still hurting” love this video😍
OMG!! I freaking love your reaction of this. I could see musical theatre is life for you. You just gave me life with your reaction video.. can you say new sub!!!
I cry EVERY. TIME. I watch Cynthia sing. She is an incredible artist and leaves her heart in each performance. Thank you for reviewing this!! I'd love to see you review Mandy Patinkin "Finishing The Hat" if you haven't already done it
And in that very moment when she gave everything to that audience and she made you feel her triumph. In that very moment she won her Tony. I’m sobbing. It was so good. 😍
WOW! I was blown away to the point of chills and tears. Absolutely love your assessment because initially I am emotionally overwhelmed by the total performance. Dissecting what is being conveyed to the audience gives me a better, more informed respect and appreciation. Thank you!
As much as I watch the performances, I look at you. I would say, just from your passion and acting know-how, I someday hope I meet you. I would take you to any live show just to be able to hear you break it down, and I would truly have a hard time not looking at you, as your face becomes beautifully expressive. I wanna see it the way you see it. You are an amazing positive influence. Not bashing the bad things that critics hit upon, but the genuine joy of life. Stay true to you. And yes, I'm crushing.... Just saying.♡
Marc, I loved your reaction!! I loved this show and Cynthia so much I went four times to see it! I swear every time I saw it Cynthia was better then the time before. The whole cast was phenomenal but I really felt a connection with Cynthia and I feel it every time I see her perform. Keep up the great work Marc!
I love your reactions, it come from the heart. This performance and Cynthia Erivo's voice truly are inspiring, chilling and mesmerizing. I love how your reaction is so real, and reminds me of the power of music and theater, the magic of being there. I really miss it, I hope we'll be able to experience it all soon. There is nothing like the magic of Broadway, and the piercing emotion of moments like these.
This video of her performance is my emotional support video, I have it saved to my computer because if it ever got taken off youtube I would be devastated. I've watched it dozens of times and it never feels less magical.
Thanks so much for reviewing this performance - my absolute favorite of all time. I saw this show 4 times just because of Ms. Erivo’s performance and each time it felt as new and raw as the first time!
Marc Daniel Patrick - each time in the 3rd or 4th row. Cannot tell you how many people seated around us saw the show 6, 7, or even 8 times. Each time we brought our kids and friends to share the experience. Yes, we spent a small fortune on these tix, but got back soooo much more.
Thank you so much for this series -- especially this video. They would be great at any time, but especially now -- when there's no theater to be had and no way to get that communal audience experience, this is as close as I've been able to get to that same feeling :) To watch a performance "with" you feel and talk about your reactions is the closest I've felt to experiencing live theater with someone in a long time -- so THANK YOU!!
another honest and knowledgable look into what real acting is . on point. how about a break down of Elaine Stritch /Ladies who lunch. i'd love to see that
Hello sir. I don’t know if you will see this comment as it has been a few days but I want to thank you for this reaction. The performance happens to be a favorite of mine despite my lack of knowledge on Broadway plays and musical theater in general. While I don’t know any Broadway musicals and only come across them through their titles and a few songs, I have come to love them through those limited materials nonetheless. Although I just came across your channel this morning, I love your videos immensely and can see your deep love and appreciation for theatrical performances. I hope you won’t mind reacting to When He Sees Me performed by Kimiko Glenn in Waitress. While I do not know much about the play or if there is a recording of her performance, I have listened to the audio recording and have fell in love with the song as well as her voice. Thank you again for the reaction to Erivo and much love from a new subscriber.
Aww. Absolutely my pleasure. Thank you so much for this gracious comment and I hope this channel can expose you to more great musical theatre performances.
I'm glad he got emotional because I'm sitting here on my couch with tears streaming down my face. Simply stunning.

I've felt like this as a kid. I love this song. I love her rendition. It always makes me cry because that transformation is so real and empowering.
The video of her final performance is epic. The cracks, the emotion, the redemption of the performance is amazing. If it doesn't make you cry, then you are just broken
Agreed
Everytime I see this performance I'm left speechless and crying, she's soooo talented. Cynthia is awesome!
I remember seeing this movie as a child and being devastated. This song makes me cry every single time. ❤️❤️
Wow! I cn only imagine what it would have been like to see this in person! Fantastic analysis as well
Oh man, I was there with you... I was there with her. I have loved that performance for forever now. The feels. That right there is what life is truly all about.
Well said.
She does a cover with Shoshana Bean of I Did Something Bad. You’ve gotta see it.
YES. It is absolute genius. Watch it. NOW.

Marc, we started crying at the same time. Wow. What a gift Cynthia has **still crying**
Thank you. Appreciate that.
Ugh. I feel this, there are so many songs in musical theater that make me cry, EVERY SINGLE TIME. thank you for letting us theater geeks see someone who is so entrenched in this world still live for these moments.
MT is such a vulnerable expression of art, the reactions should be the same. Just my opinion anyway.
@@MarcDanielPatrick its true I have seen Les Mis at least 10 times since I was 16, I'm much older now ;-) but On My Own brings me back to every time someone didn't love me back, it hurts and breaks your heart but you still love and try again, that is the magic of MT.
you are a performer's dream audience 💖
you are so open to whatever comes your way, let the emotions wash over you and react whole heartedly to what you see and hear, whilst recognizing the hard labour that went into the performance you watch and providing criticism from a place of love and the desire to help make an already wonderful performance/artist even better!
thank you ☺️
Thank you so much for these kind words. Truly means a lot.
Merch idea: a T-shirt that says “I sometimes mouth the words” or some of the masks that they make for singers... the ones that let you open your mouth so you can articulate the words properly. I love the idea of the master classes. Also, I love these videos!
So I actually laughed out loud reading that t-shirt idea... love it. Thank you so much for the support!
her performance will ALWAYS be my favorite. gets me emotional every time. love her so.
I'm going to need you to review some Book of Mormon performances or something with comedy, because I can't keep sobbing with love and joy every couple days. But then it's exactly as you described, it's incredible that people go to this place eight times a week and feel those feels. It's absolutely incredible.
Haha. My thoughts exactly. Lets maybe lighten it up for a couple of videos huh? 😂
She has a Emmy Grammy and tony !
I love your reviews! I learn so much! Thanks for sharing your expertise!! Her voice! Terrific! I miss live theatre!
I'm so happy I found this channel.
Thanks Adam! Means a lot.
I’ve watched this a few times❤️ my favorite of her songs, and you just say exactly what needs to be said! You gave her space and commented at the perfect times. Genius.
This song is just 🙌
Watched this live, life changing experience honestly. Was not expecting the feels I got during this show.
I'll get to Leslie soon, dont you worry.
This. Is. Everything!!!!!! I love her till the end of time!!! An absolute angel.
I probably come back to this video
once a month 😅🎶🎵
you're up for a cry once a month...really? lol
I love her so so so much. She really puts all her emotion and all the pain though her voice and It really touches the audience.
Me sees Cynthia Erivo on the thumbnail: OMGGGGG!!!!!
Me *after hearing those first bars: *Cries and Dies* 😭 I love her so much!!!
Right? lol
You just earned me as a new subscriber.
i truly hope to have a coach like you one day. thank you for all your commentary!!!
Aw. Thanks so much. Means a lot.
I subbed for the tears you shed during this because I legitimately listen to this song almost once a day and it's perfection.
Love love love!! One of my favorite shows. Saw original with Fantasia. Thank you for showing this version. This song is my life’s theme song❤️
The emotion I felt watching you watch her was riveting. I can tell you love the theater and the force that Cynthia is🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 you need to react to her singing “I’m still hurting” love this video😍
When I've emotionally recovered, I will tackle this one as well, I promise. Thanks so much!
Tears. All of the tears. I am...a mess.
I got so emotional watching this video, so beautiful and powerful. you really feel it. I love musical theatre.
🙏
Tough to find a better performance.
WOW! I was blown away to the point of chills and tears. Absolutely love your assessment because initially I am emotionally overwhelmed by the total performance. Dissecting what is being conveyed to the audience gives me a better, more informed respect and appreciation.
Thank you!
Yes Marc, I know I know. We all cry while and after we watched this.
your reaction literally brought me to tears, thank u for letting the emotion come through.
Thank you. Although I need to stop crying in all my videos. Haha
Geesh, I cry everytime I hear this song. So I am so glad so many feel the same way!
This is probably one of, if not my favorite broadway songs. Loved this reaction ❤️❤️❤️
It's gotta be up there for everyone huh?
So glad you did this one! Would love to see some Aida and Jekyll & Hyde performances soon
Hmmm. First request for the Jekyll & Hyde. I'll have to take you up on that. Thank you.
I just sobbed. I miss the theater...this This literally just made me ball my eyes out.
This scene gets me so emotional also. I've seen color purple a few different times and I always cry. I get you.
So well said! Nothing like experiencing the magic live.
One of the best singers of all time. So glad I found this channel!! You seem so kind!
BY FAR! One of the best performers we've ever had in this profession. Agreed.
This video of her performance is my emotional support video, I have it saved to my computer because if it ever got taken off youtube I would be devastated. I've watched it dozens of times and it never feels less magical.
Watching you get emotional made me more emotional. Great video 🌸
Thanks so much for reviewing this performance - my absolute favorite of all time. I saw this show 4 times just because of Ms. Erivo’s performance and each time it felt as new and raw as the first time!
4 times? Good on ya.
Cynthia Erivo is a true force of nature and the perfect combination of power, heart, vulnerability and love. She is astounding.
Damn!!! I couldn’t see the end of this video thought the tears I tried sooooooo hard to hold back!!!! 😭😭😭👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Goosebumps just goosebumps at this performance 🙏
You’re the cutest. I was feeling every chill and emotion 🥰
Thanks so much 🙏
Thank you so much for this series -- especially this video.
Jennifer, dont make me cry again...Haha. Thank you so much for the heartfelt comment. Truly means a lot.
Been crying and learning stuff all morning, thanks
another honest and knowledgable look into what real acting is . on point. how about a break down of Elaine Stritch /Ladies who lunch. i'd love to see that
Thank you so much.
Your reaction at about the 7:30-8 mark is PRICELESS! The same thing I felt the first time I saw her sing it live.
