People come at her for getting constantly emotional in interviews, but if I had a gift like this and had the opportunity to touch so many lives with it I would never stop crying. It is a beautiful thing.
That feeling of closing a chapter of your life, screaming an anthem of love and saying goodbye in such a real and intense way. Being able to expel that much emotion in song. That’s the beauty of live theatre, and I weep in awe and sadness at the familiarity of that feeling
When she gets choked up on "everything that I need to live a bountiful life" is when I absolutely lost it. I was already tearing up but after that they were flowing. Phenomenal isn't a good enough word to describe her.
I just LOVE how she gets emotional on the line "I believe I have inside of me, everything that I need to live a bountiful life". As an actor this statement is so powerful and I can clearly see why she got choked up here.
I have watched this video numerous times but returned after watching her sing "Alfie" at the Kennedy Center. To see all the wonderful things that have happened for her from this video to now....standing ovation young lady!!!!
Cynthia is a force of nature. The most brilliant star of stars. I had the utmost pleasure of experiencing her talent in person at a performance of The Color Purple. In the 25 years of seeing broadway shows, I never witnessed a spontaneous, riotous standing ovation before the finale. It was an out-of-body experience.
This perspective is like a window looking in, which is more emotional then seeing clearly, it’s like your living in more real an it just sinks in cuz it’s just there
I normally work in the wings for shows and have been fortunate enough to work on wicked, lion king, book of mormon to name a few. I always get choked up when I see actors bare their soul and give every ounce of themselves 6 days a week to others we (cast and crew) miss birthdays, weddings, births, christmas, and all sorts of occasions so that people can be entertained. And when you see a swing go on for the first time or the cast singing happy birthday to another you create a family. Moments like this are beautiful.
Loved this perspective. I was fortunate to see this in the front and center row a month prior. It was the best theatrical experience of my life and Cynthia's performance of this song is the single greatest contemporary theatre moment in my opinion. Beautiful. Cried through this entire show!
Am I the only one watching this on a weekly basis as a regular affirmation from a voice of an Angel, and the company that supported her in a time when she was taking her last hurrah?
OMG. I've never seen this view of this. I was in the audience that day; so incredibly special. Look what she's done with the show and all that she's done since. And now Joaquina!
Everything about this is love. Love Cynthia, love the support from her cast mates and love the reception from the audience. What a memorable performance.
THATS why i take Musicals and Theater and any sow on Stage over a Movie. Yes Movie Cast's stay together a long time and they become family too but nothing compares to that i think. That was Heartwarming
Any time I feel a bit down I watch this and cry happy tears! I just love this so much. The support from the cast just make me cry more. Cynthia Erivo is just a blessing we are lucky enough to hear.
jesus christ i am crying so much, just the power and emotion of the song, and the sheer amount of love in that room ?? you can feel it through the screen
I come back to this video every few months to be reminded just how special a cast can be! Sharing these moments with a group of ppl that are all rooting each other on is beyond words.
there are no words to express how much music brings people together. not only did this performance execute her dedication, love, joy, spirit, soul and heart, but it brought out the support and joy and love an emotions from the audience. there was never a dull moment in this performance. every word showed celie’s broken and bruised spirt. every note showed cynthia’s connection with her character. THIS is a performance. this is what “theatre kids” in highschools work to become. this is what we dream to do. we dream to build this bond with our characters and audience. every second of this performance grabs you up and doesnt let you go. not even after you watch it. the chills from the pain she is sharing, is overwhelming, but so true and honest. unbelievable.
Out of all the performances, all the Broadway shows I've seen, this performance is unmatched. Truly unforgettable. You could feel the energy in that theater even before the show began. SEVERAL standing ovations, and then this. I wish I could relive this afternoon.
Ms. Erivo is absolutely amazing. Emotions everywhere is our theatre classroom right now. All I wanna know is how is it possible that they were allowed to have their phones backstage and we are never allowed to have our phones backstage. But I guess I understand that they knew how important this night was and they caught it in the right moment. I'm still a little jealous though😂
I love, love, love when a singer lose themselves in singing/ presenting God's spirit not, letting go of self yes from a spiritual level/ letting God lead all the way:) As a little girl my goddaughter singer/actress/artist Allison J. would often present this way. OMG it's great.
Thank you for sharing your moment with us. It is beautiful. You must be a beautiful human being. ❤️ Cynthia gave sooo much love in that performance, and this time everyone in the room is giving back that love. Such a powerful moment. ❤️
I love this show so much, I actually lost count of how many times I saw it while it was on Broadway. This cast left their all on that stage with EACH performance!!!! I wish them all nothing but well.
You know you're special, when the cast bootleg your performance while crying in the wings.
Facts
If I’m ever on Broadway I wanna be good enough that bootlegs of my performance are sold on the black market🤣😂❤️
People come at her for getting constantly emotional in interviews, but if I had a gift like this and had the opportunity to touch so many lives with it I would never stop crying. It is a beautiful thing.

Yesssss, me too!!! I get choked up every time!!

the cast cheering her on backstage my heart
That "I'm gonna SING OUT!" was one of the most powerful things I've ever heard
I love the voice before the last three notes that says, "Here we go, y'all."
I'm crying too because I missed seeing this in person
SHE WAS STRUGGLING TO KEEP HER SELF TOGETHER OMG
I was too and I still am
SOOOO special the parts she choked up on. Such a testament how much she sings from her WHOLE heart. Beautiful!
this was 7 years ago but I’m crying now
I’m sobbing just hearing the cast and crew crying backstage!
Sobbing right along with the cast😭😭

Arguably the best moment of all time in musical theatre. So powerful.

You sure are here, girl.
I’ve never cried this much with a song
Wow!!!
I saw this show as a last minute desicion a few years ago and to saaaaay I was shook with her voice would be an understatement

Sobbing uncontrollably at this. The support from the audience and the cast is just absolutely incredible. And feeling her emotion in every word. Wow.

When the cast member said “take your time”. She was really saying “sing like you in church and bring this god damn house DOWN”
If I was there I would have been the biggest emotion wreck you will possibly ever see
