The problem issue with BMW design in recent years was an overly fussy approach to surfaces with many incongruent details. At the end of the day, it's really about proportions and that is something BMW got right for so many years.
Using same platform and body for ice and electric had very negative impact on proportions. Hopefully it’s get better from here with bmw going to ground up ev approach
Yeah I am surprised by these German cars interior choices. Mercedes infotainment screen looks like an old massive Samsung tablets. Bmw looks like they attached a gaming monitor to the top. I am currently waiting on audi. I have seen the a5 and it is also a big screen but it does look more professionally put with a housing. Audis have made generally great interiors and I am waiting to see the future lineup. But man Do I like the Early 2010s car interiors in cars like the e93 m3.
I never understood the hate on Bangle. Besides the 7-series and maybe the 6-series, his designs were pretty good. Innovative, good line flow and proportions, strong identity, and fresh. The E60 is my favorite design of his. It has excellent line flow, proportions, and nothing else looks like it.

They even made a point about the interior - that it will looks the same across most offerings but on the outside, every model will have its own unique look.
2:52 I think it’s funny that while most people complained that ‘all cars look the same nowadays’, BMW is criticised for NOT making cars that look the same. I think that BMWs are still very recognisable no matter how large or small the grill is.

What I do not want, is my favorite auto maker to turn into a sweetish ikea auto brand style. Don’t get me wrong, they make great cars but I personally want to see BMW go back to cross between Bangle and generations before. I hate the last 2 years of BMW interior designs. iPads are for hand use, not driving. I would love to see interiors go back to the cockpit designs wrapping the driver with the controls. Integrate digital designs and allow the users to switch between analog digital gauges and maybe newer styles. Bring back dashes and shifters, buttons, etc. and make the line up flow from top to bottom. Thanks.
I'm not the biggest fan of the 2 screens solutions in the dashboard, but i can really say i hate volvo interior. That middle screen with those horrible vents is what keeps me up at night.
Agreed about the Volvo and Polstar clean lines. 2016 F82 M4 owner here… I’m not really objective but I think the F82 design is still great after 8 years and one of the best from BMW in the 21st century. 👍🍻 I’ll drive it as long as possible…..it has been flawless thus far. 😊

Great professionals working together doesn't always translate into great results, specially when you have people with such different visions about the same thing. If anything, I think this may end up leading into more atrocious grils and disconnection between design laguage.
Finally I’m so hyped I can’t wait for the first car they release, I’m guessing they’ll probably redesign the next generation 3 series 8 series is also overdue for redesign or x7.
2:14 i think g20 pre lci is a good design but everything else in last 5 years is not thats when the downfall started. Also e90/e60/e65 was a low point which we see now wasnt that bad but some of the best designs came after. Yes e90 lci in black and m package looks cool but still.
Whoever designed the 2012-2019 BMW 3/4 series as well as the M3/M4. The 5 series 2017-2024 and the M5. The 8 series aswell as previous X5/X6. And previous 2 series/M2 ..BMW needs to get those guys back.
Chris Bengal is the last guy he should be referencing here. BMW needs to do nothing short of designing retro versions of the e3, e9, e12, e23, and e24.
I was searching and id say in 2016 with the X2 concept it started to go wrong, then in 2017 it went wrong already with concept cars and since the x7 in 2019 its been getting worse. But i do like the current m3, m2 and m5 to be honest.
As someone who doesn't mind the big grille, Im ecstatic with this change. Big grilles can be nice if you know how to integrate them to the design, but it seems Dukec just doesn't know how to do that (or at the very least he doesn't want to.)
Mini designer is also changed, doing this just after launching the new models is a bit strange, maybe a restyling coming in some years with the new designer
when the e60 and e63 came out everyone said the previous generation was the last real BMW and then when they made the f series people started liking the e60 and e63s and then when the g series came out everyone started saying the f series was the last real BMW you guys just love to hate on anything BMW makes and can't seem to understand they want to widen out to the masses and make more money with their new designs while keeping their performance models still there
Saw this on bmw forums and hot damn they need to make changes ASAP. The current cars look sooooo bad. Been seriously joking there's a sabotuer within BMW's design team. The only one that looks good is the new X1. The new team design can't seem to come to production fast enough. The interiors too need saving
IMHO, the E65 7-Series is when I started to be disappointed by BMW's designs. If I am not mistaken, Mr AVH, the current Head of BMW Group Design, was involved in the project, so let's see what this brings... There is hope.
I do like their m3 series design since 2021. M2, M3/4, M5,8, M7 all unique. Haters hate. All of the body aero dynamics is not what old school design can compare. Shape is more organic. Maybe M5/8 are close to what they had before. Others are sort of controversial.
Now these thumbnails look sexy. I have an i4 m50 atm and I got used to the beaver grill but the newer stuff just looked too whack. If they start going down the route of the thumbnail well still love you bmw
It's interesting how passionate BMW fans are of only CERTAIN generation's, i personally love lci e90s but the bigger grilles of g80s aren't for me, and It seems nobody loves BMW as a whole anymore
Possibly sad news for Polestar, but great news for BMW I guess. The Polestar 2 was designed for Volvo by Ingenlath before Polestar was a brand, so this doesn't mean we get another BMW as good looking as the E46 (facelift) or E60 yet, but at least theres hope. As much grief as Bangle gets, considering BMWs formula up until him was so predictable that Lexus and even Mitsubishi could make BMWs future designs before they did themselves, he had no choice but to go away from the Chevrolet Corvair based line of design.
I don't know where Dukec (who is responsible for some truly horrific designs and is the reason I still drive my F30 3-series) gets his claim that people are now looking back fondly on Bangle's designs. Everyone I know here in the Netherlands still hates those designs with a passion. The fact that Dukec manages to come up with designs that are even uglier than the Bangle designs doesn't automatically mean we start liking those... we just severely dislike both the Bangle era ánd the current era. Just for the record, I do (still) like the E46 3-series. But even though Chris Bangle was in charge at the time, the actual designers on that car were Wolfgang Reitzle (sedan) and Erik Goplen (coupe). And the reason I like the E46 but don't love it is because they dropped the ball on the rear lights : )
I've owned BMW's, mostly M cars, since 1995. The last 7-8 years of BMW design has been so awful I've completely lost any interest in the brand. Nice job BMW!
I think we owe Chris Bangle an apology.

2:14 i think g20 pre lci is a good design but everything else in last 5 years is not thats when the downfall started. Also e90/e60/e65 was a low point which we see now wasnt that bad but some of the best designs came after. Yes e90 lci in black and m package looks cool but still.
Bangle era cars (aside from the 7 series) aged remarkably well though
Funny thing is the new G8x cars have sold more than the F8x cars and I see a lot of em on the road.
Whoever designed the 2012-2019 BMW 3/4 series as well as the M3/M4. The 5 series 2017-2024 and the M5. The 8 series aswell as previous X5/X6. And previous 2 series/M2
..BMW needs to get those guys back.
Personally the controversy started in 2020... 2010s was an amazing time for bmw I loved it so much
I'm looking at their cars today and I'm just wondering what's wrong with just making beautiful cars for a change?
For me, the golden era of BMW's design was 80's and 90's.
Chris Bengal is the last guy he should be referencing here.
BMW needs to do nothing short of designing retro versions of the e3, e9, e12, e23, and e24.
Maybe you should show us what a Missoni designed BMW could look like, based on his work at Polestar?
I was searching and id say in 2016 with the X2 concept it started to go wrong, then in 2017 it went wrong already with concept cars and since the x7 in 2019 its been getting worse. But i do like the current m3, m2 and m5 to be honest.
Beaver grills are just stunning 😂😂😂
After the E46, bmw started to be just everywhere trying to look like everybody. Hopefully the new team will bring back those glorious days.
From the looks, I think they took the VGT concept and reimagined it
I hope new desing chef change boring interiors and add buttons on the dash as well..
As someone who doesn't mind the big grille, Im ecstatic with this change. Big grilles can be nice if you know how to integrate them to the design, but it seems Dukec just doesn't know how to do that (or at the very least he doesn't want to.)
BMW has one of the best looking cars right now
Polestar you mean....
Mini designer is also changed, doing this just after launching the new models is a bit strange, maybe a restyling coming in some years with the new designer
All those who emptied their vitriol on Bangle butt never got see 2005 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W221) where the Bangle butt was much present. Strange!!!
I owned an E36 Schnitzer I also liked the looks of Z3 wide-body, M3 CSL and 1M. I now own a lovely 981 Cayman
when the e60 and e63 came out everyone said the previous generation was the last real BMW and then when they made the f series people started liking the e60 and e63s and then when the g series came out everyone started saying the f series was the last real BMW you guys just love to hate on anything BMW makes and can't seem to understand they want to widen out to the masses and make more money with their new designs while keeping their performance models still there
Didn’t bangle apologise for the prefacelift 7er e65?
he got fired immediately
@@seansiew5629it wasnt exactly immediately?
Bembli: MASSIVE news from BMW!
Comments: no hat is crazy bro
Having the whole lineup with identical facias isn’t good either. Then you’ll end up like Audi where an A1 looks like an A3 and A5 and A7 and A8.
Saw this on bmw forums and hot damn they need to make changes ASAP. The current cars look sooooo bad. Been seriously joking there's a sabotuer within BMW's design team. The only one that looks good is the new X1. The new team design can't seem to come to production fast enough. The interiors too need saving
From the polestar that I saw here, i prefer the current design of the BMW
IMHO, the E65 7-Series is when I started to be disappointed by BMW's designs.
If I am not mistaken, Mr AVH, the current Head of BMW Group Design, was involved in the project, so let's see what this brings...
There is hope.
We got Bembii without a hat before…well you get the idea
I think that is a welcome change and I hope there will fix that weird grill on the M4. Na bora wasiguze murima
Bembli just opened his sun roof
This is a SUPER high risk for BMW and bold move, keeping one eye open.....Volvo?
Possibly sad news for Polestar, but great news for BMW I guess. The Polestar 2 was designed for Volvo by Ingenlath before Polestar was a brand, so this doesn't mean we get another BMW as good looking as the E46 (facelift) or E60 yet, but at least theres hope.
As much grief as Bangle gets, considering BMWs formula up until him was so predictable that Lexus and even Mitsubishi could make BMWs future designs before they did themselves, he had no choice but to go away from the Chevrolet Corvair based line of design.
Why do designers today just say "lets make a car look so bad you dont wanna look at it and ruin a brand! "
Am I the only one who doesn’t like the minimalist futuristic polestar look
BMWs main problem is the headlights??? Unless those headlights weight about 300 hundred pounds a piece, I'm gonna have to disagree.
