When I was young I heard this simple argument for agnosticism-
How much do you know about the universe? Do you know 50%? Do you know 10%? Perhaps 1%? For the sake of argument, let's just say that you know 1% of the universe. You can check to see if I'm correct but, even at 1%, this would make you the smartest human being who ever lived. Let's give you the benefit of the doubt that you are indeed the smartest person who ever lived, even smarter than Alex O'Connor. Here's the question:
Is it possible that God exists outside the 99% of knowledge you have about the universe? Conversely, is it possible that God does not exist outside the 99% of knowledge about the universe?
There's a 99% likelihood that you don't know one way or the other about God's existence. Why must you then blindly choose to believe one way or the other? It's a false binary. You don't have to believe one way or the other. You can simply balance both possibilities in your mind and be amazed and awed at the wondrous 99% of the universe you don't understand.

Hey Alex! Throughout your video you say something to the effect of “I’ve already talked about this”; would you mind linking to videos where you have talked about those subjects so that those wanting to follow up may more easily navigate to them? Thanks. Btw I’ve been watching your videos for the last 6 years and have only just subscribed for some reason. I might have already subscribed with a different channel, although I’m not sure. I’m Muslim, but your content has been a wellspring of reference points for my curiosity. You have a degree of what Muslims call adab, and so I appreciate your work.

It’s a fundamental part of the Christian faith, and most other faiths for that matter.
Calling Christianity death cultish makes no sense since Christians consider suffering in hell to be the absolute worst state someone can be in. And killing yourself is a major sin in Christianity anyway.
Everybody has a responsibility to make the world a better place and do as much good as they can before they die. Killing yourself in some cult ceremony would completely oppose that.

    • @You2lessgetit
      @You2lessgetit 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +68

As a Christian I agree. God did not create us evil, He created us good. Everything He created in the 6 days (doesn't have to be literal), He called "Good." Including HUMANS. (Genesis 1:1-30) He knew something was off when He just created man, so He created a woman. That doesn't mean that man was bad but that something was missing and that is why He created women. Humans only become "bad" when they turn away from God. God created each of us with an amazing purpose and it is good, it is us that chooses to turn from it. And that doesn't mean we are "evil", it just means that we are not as good as God. And since you are comparing humans to a being that is infinitely good, we are evil. Not because we are evil but because God is so much more good than us, the gap is so big, that we are like evil. We are so far from the goodness from God, that our goodness is like the difference between saving a person from a house fire and setting a house on fire.
It is not that we deserve suffering but that following Christ requires sacrifice.
"In this world you will have many trials and tribulations, but take heart; I have overcome the world!" - Jesus
In a world that is full of evil, when we choose good, we are natrually gonna suffer. "It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us."
However, for something like cancer that is uncontrollable, there is a scientific cause for that. Sometimes, there are things we just can't control. That is not that God doesn't care (psalm 56:8), but that unfortunate things such as sickness are a result of the fallen world we live in. With that sickeness that God didn't create, He doesn't just say "screw you, you deal with that.", He helps those who are in need. All He requires is that you follow Him, not because He only cares about those who follow Him but that He knows what is best for us, so if we follow Him, we are gonna be helping ourselves. It is like a doctor who recommends taking medicine, it is not that they only care about patients who take their medicine but they care about everyone and is providing a solution to everyone. It is the exact same thing as God. Because if you rely on yourself to help you, it is destined to fail. Sure, falling short doesn't mean you can't help yourself at all but you can't help yourself to the extent if you went to the one who is infinitely wise to help you. (Romans 5:3-5, Romans 8:28) It is not that we deserve the evil that happens to us, evil like cancer just happen and we cannot control that. But God has offered healing, but we choose to ignore God and that is why our suffering persists. We are ignoring solutions to our suffering, it is right in front of our eyes but we do not believe. "Then the diciples went to Jesus in private and asked, 'Why couldn't we drive it out?' Jesus replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as little as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain: move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'" Matthew 17:19-20
I hope this helps but if it doesn't, please let me know

5 hours after this was posted, Zoomer pinned a comment that claimed the video wasn't meant to be taken seriously. His video is a month old, he pinned the comment to deflect all criticism.
Edit: This comment has become more popular than I thought, so I would like to clarify my position.
Zoomer's video was out for 1 month before Alex's video and he received plenty of responses from other youtubers. For 5 hours Alex's video had been out and the only eluding to his video being a joke was that he pinned a comment that thought his video is a joke.
I believe he did this for the sake of plausible deniability, he wanted to have people mock atheists for taking it seriously but have people feel like the video should to some degree represent atheists in a degrading way.
Furthering this idea, he would post "RESPONSE to criticism of my atheism video" in which he backpedaled further, saying the video was a bad take because he was a shortform channel, making no acknowledgement that the video was ever a joke, because if he did he'd lose that plausible deniability.
Don't bother flaming him for this, it just fuels the Christian persecution complex and gives him exposure. Instead, support secular historians like UsefulCharts and ReligionForBreakfast, especially since Zoomer doesn't like "some secular scholars".

3:47 Nah I was born and raised in the middle east as a Muslim and I found my way to atheism even before I learned to speak a word of English. Maybe where you were born might change the religion you start with, but all it takes to become an atheist is using your brain, regardless of where you are.

    • @wikipiiimp9420

tbf it's much more likely to become an atheist if you live in an environment where you have access to the tool for critical thinkings. which is why atheists are more prevalent in high education and academics compared to the people with lower education and lack of access to education
sociology also show that harsh environment increase religious fervor (which include natural disasters, poverty, war, etc) so living in a stable, wealthy and free country increase the likelyhood of being atheist.
both those factors (better education and economic prosperity) also goes hand in hand, which explain why wealthy western countries are much more likely to have atheism compared to let's say, very poor and unstable countries like in africa or the middle east.
this don't mean that there are no religious fundies in the west, or no atheists in africa or the ME, just that the odds vary depending on the environment.
also obviously if there is a state sponsored ideology, this increase the likelyhood of said ideology and belief system to be more prevalent (more christian in a christian theocracy, most atheists in a communist regime for example)
and also, atheists are more numerous in free countries / democracies and secular nations (like western europe or the US) because freedom of speech protect freedom to criticize religious idea and therefore atheists are more likely to spread their message (which explain the fast increase in atheism in the us for example, but not in saudi arabia despite saudi arabia being also wealthy with good education, because of the massive censorship and propaganda in authoritarian regimes)
of course there can be exceptions, like there can be exception to any other form of socioeconomic dynamics
like you can have someone from a very poor neighborhood that will become a nobel prize, but if you see more nobel prizes from the US than from let's say Nigeria, it's not because the US inhabitants are better (which would be a stupid racist claim btw), but because this country is richer, and thefore can fund better education, good universities and also fund the research that is needed for scientific endeavors, and also because the US have a big, advanced private and public sector in fields such as information technology (silicon valley) and a big defense budget which boost research in scientific fields such as semiconductors, advanced materials, aeronautics and space, biology, nuclear energy, etc while Nigeria is not as lucky regarding their economic means, which mean much fewer opportunities for someone to become a scientist, and then to make some discovery.

Would you mind chiming in on the “fine tuned” argument? I’ve never understood the logic and Alex kind of skimmed over it in this video.
To me it amounts to “if things were any different, they’d be different” or the “this rain was finely tuned to fit this hole” metaphor.
There are hundreds of thousands of planets in our galaxy alone that could sustain life. The logic doesn’t follow, and facts like this make the argument itself pretty weak.

    • @allthenewsordeath5772
      @allthenewsordeath5772 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well the fine tuning argument still holds owing to the nature of humans, that is well there may be thousands of planets in the galaxy that can support life, there are many fewer that could support complex life, and still fewer that could support intelligent life, and as far as we are aware, earth is the only planet ware intelligent life has evolved, we will define intelligent here as being smart enough to comprehend our own existence.
In short though the theist and the atheist both agree on the central point of the matter, namely, that the probability of us having this discussion right now, under the circumstances is ridiculously, astronomically, infantecimally small, the primary difference though is that the atheist regards this as mere chance, and the theist regards it as divine providence .
We could actually broaden this out to encompass not only fine-tuning arguments, but the argument of God supposedly not being discernible in the universe, since we only have a sample size of one we don’t actually know through what we can observe if a universe made by God looks substantially different from a universe which appears Spontaneously.
Because though at its logical conclusion this line of argumentation points towards agnosticism, rather than theism or atheism, people don’t tend to bring it up that much.

    • @danielwoodruff3118
      @danielwoodruff3118 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@justanotheropinion5832 I want to preface this response by saying that I am not a credentialed expert in physics or cosmology. My knowledge on this topic comes from the scientific literature I've read in my personal study. I also don't believe fine-tuning is the most compelling case for the Christian God. However, to answer your question, the argument goes something like this:
Modern physics recognizes a set of universal constants. These fundamental quantities are independent and not derived from anything else. Properties such as the strength of steel or the rate of heat transfer through glass are dependent. They are effects caused by a combination of other factors. Independent constants such as the elementary charge of a proton, the Planck constant, or the speed of light in a vacuum are not the result of other forces or effects. They are hard-coded at the most fundamental levels of reality. Modern science currently recognizes more than twenty of these constants.
Fine-tuning arguments look at these and other factors that influence the nature of the universe. According to the fine-tuning argument, the exact quantity of each physical constant and the respective ratios must all be precisely as they are for life to exist. In most cases, the tiniest change to one of these constants would not only prohibit life as we know it but would make most forms of matter impossible too. Our universe is not merely tuned to allow for some kind of life, but it seems to be arranged in the only way allowing for any life at all.
Again, I don't believe this to be the strongest case for Christianity, but it definitely carries some weight. Dr. John Lennox of Oxford University wrote a book on the subject I would highly recommend: Cosmic Chemistry: Do God and Science Mix? It's a scholarly read that dissects this issue in much greater detail.

Most people have heard “Jesus/God loves you”. Does that mean they have a relationship with God and will go to heaven? Depends on the individual. A relationship is 2 sided, you receive love and you give love back.
God showed His love by suffering, dying on the cross and rising from the dead for you, now you show Love back by repenting of your sins (lying, stealing, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain etc) and believing in Jesus as your Lord and saviour so that Heaven is in your future not hell.

I think it comes from the opposition of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany, and many Protestant churches, towards the Nazis, right from the formation of the party in the 1920s; and the Nazi party's desire to have the church subordinate to the state (because they opposed any and all independent power structures). And then you've got prominent Nazis, such as Bormann, who hated the Semitic origins of Christianity.
But, of course, that doesn't mean that the majority of the party, including senior members, weren't Christian. They just weren't part of any extant church.
"The Party stands on the basis of Positive Christianity, and positive Christianity is National Socialism ... National Socialism is the doing of God's will ... Christianity is not dependent upon the Apostles' Creed ... True Christianity is represented by the party, and the German people are now called by the party and especially the Fuehrer to a real Christianity" - Hanns Kerrl, 1937
The plan to "de-Christianise Germany after the final victory" described by the likes of Anton Gill(1) wasn't one to make Germany an atheist state, but one to abolish any church that wasn't The Party.
      (1) Anton Gil is a British author who wrote fiction and non-fiction, including three Assassin's Creed books under a pseudonym. He won the H.H. Wingate Award for non-fiction for The Journey Back From Hell, an account of the lives of survivors of the Nazi concentration camps.

As a Christian, I was positively surprised at how incredibly respectful and reasonable you're being in this video. I can tell how good your intentions for making this video were. Honestly, I find it kind of sad to see fellow Christians (like Redeemed Zoomer) wasting so much time, and energy trying to prove a God whose whole spiel is to transcend our understanding, instead of using the love and positivity that our God irrefutably does provide, to make a positive impact on this earth before we leave it. Personally, I have pretty much given up on "understanding" or "proving" God, as believing in God is fundamentally unreasonable and can not be justified by scientific methods or argumentation if you truly believe in the God that the Bible describes. The fruits of my personal relationship with God in my life are more than enough for me to believe not just in God's existence but all of his divine properties according to the Bible. As for you, I applaud the clearly good intentions that you have with your videos, but my prayer is that one day, you might start looking past all the arguments against and for God's mere existence and start truly searching for God, the person. If the Bible is to be trusted (hehe), he is a good father, who loves you like no human ever could and wants you to be saved, he's waiting for you with open arms, waiting for you to turn the eyes of your heart to him. Anyhow, I wish you (or whoever is reading this mess of a comment) a lovely day.

as a Christian I disagree. Faith is to hold to the beliefs which your rational mind has accepted. that means that you hold onto your beliefs even while your mood might lean in a different direction. I will agree with you however that there is no proof for Christ, or the creation of the universe for that matter. There is also no proof against both of those things. The problem with desiring proof is that it is impossible for proof either for or against the creation of the universe to exist. Proof is a scientific concept that says that based on certain evidence there can be no doubt of the subject in question. Since science is merely the rules we attribute to the universe based on the evidence that lies around us, we can never PROVE the origin of the universe or the existence of a God. Inside a created universe we could never find the creator just as in a painting you could never find the painter. This is not to say that there is not evidence of a creator, there is evidence both for and against but it is my conviction that the evidence for a creator, namely Jesus Christ the three personal God is far more likely.

@docterwithane8300 thank you for your reply. I basically agree with you. And have to admit that all my deeper feelings tells me there is something more than what we just see. I am pretty sure there is some creator, I am also convinced my consciousness will live on. But for all purpose I live my life as if only the known material world exist, just by being the best person I can (even if I make plenty of mistakes).
I can't say there is not a God or some kind of consciousness especially looking upon my life and how it looks like I am "helped" by something I can't understand, but that could just be a statistical flux and maybe I am just luckly . Anyway it would be easy to fall into superstition or even madness if we start to believe everything that seem "unusual" is coming from some higher entities. I guess we will see in the next life anyway.
So for me if I say I have faith my consciousness will survive it is based on my strong feelings. Otherwise if I have faith I will remain on ground due to the force of gravity or even that I have faith that atoms exists that's more like trust in science, mathematics and whatever I can use as a proof.

But Jesus died on the Cross and rose from the dead to give you the ability to repent and Believe in Him as your Lord and Saviour to go to Heaven.

As a Christian who was a former atheist of 15 years, some of Redeemed Zoomer's points were as good as they could have been.
For example, we know who wrote the Gospels because:
    1) every manuscript or manuscript fragment is attributed to MML&J. There is not a single manuscript or fragment that has any other authorship.
    2) every church father in an unbroken chain going back to the Apostles attests to the authorship of MML&J. There is complete unanimity within the Church as to the authorship, going back to the 1st century. Not a single church father disagrees with this.
3)There is not a single counter-claim of authorship. Not ONE. You would think if someone wrote a Gospel, word would've gotten out about the true author or they'd have claimed authorship.
    4) The church has a long history of rooting out apocryphal and fake texts. For example, in the 3rd century a Bishop forged a letter from Paul, and was kicked out of the church. There are numerous Gospels and texts that were omitted from the Bible because they weren't thought to be authoritative, or the authorship wasn't known.
    5) The authors named reaches the 'embarrassing details' criteria for historicity. If the early church fathers were simply slapping names on Gospels and lying about authorship, they'd never have named Mark and Luke as authors, who were barely in the NT, or Matthew, a tax collector. They would've attributed Mark to Peter (The Gospel of Peter) and Luke's Gospel to someone else.
    6) The Gospel authors were alive at the time the Gospels were written. The Book of Acts was written around 61 AD, which pushes Luke back to the 50s and Mark back to perhaps even the 40s (Sorry late-daters, we have a 1st century manuscript fragment of Mark). Evidence shows that Luke and Mark died far later than this time, so if a Gospel in their name was made, they'd have been able to refute it. Also, someone likely wouldn't have assigned their name to it if they were still alive.
    7) Paul quotes Luke's Gospel in Corinthians, about 10 years before he is martyred. Why would the Gospels be floating around falsely assigned or not assigned when Paul is citing the scripture from his friend Luke?

I’m a former evangelist/apologist who learned all the right responses to atheists, and yet today I’m an atheist. So I’ve had many many years of battling on behalf of both sides, not only with other people but internally.
Lazy arguments like the ones in the dude’s video don’t interest me, on neither side. I respect Josh McDowell’s extensive research he compiled in defense of Christianity in Evidence That Demands A Verdict, and though I’m confident it can all be refuted, it would take extensive research of my own to do so. For example, Josh cites a lot of archeological discoveries that support Bible events, which were later debunked with peer review.
Ultimately if someone has faith, and it brings them joy, a sense of community and purpose, I’m happy for them. But I’m also happy for myself, who found my own joy, peace, stability, and purpose, in optimistic nihilism. I don’t care to disprove someone’s religion unless they try to force that religion’s rules on me.

It does seem to be so, that when someone rejects free will, as atheist religion does, he also rejects any accountability and responsibility, in other words, anything becomes permissable. And that would actually also explain why lenin was so fond of torture and yelled for more blood and slaughter. This is backed by the fact that islame also rejects free will and the christian god and has same tendencies for mass murder as atheist religion.

This alone should already disprove those religions because we humans are simply animals with more developed brains and that's it, we're nothing compared to the scale of the universe yet God seems to show a lot of attention to us in these religious texts. We're not main characters/side characters, we're barely background characters in this universe. The existence of religions is a direct result of anthropocentrism.

As a war veteran, I must say that i saw a few things i wish i hadn't. Stuff like little kids getting shot in the head.
So either god can't stop those things, which means he isn't all powerfull and therefore by definition isn't god, or that he is simply evil, in which case he shouldn't be prayed to. If he isn't all powerful, and therefore not god, then theists must believe that there is in fact a god that controls this almost-godlike being, which allows that being to let little kids die, so that god is in fact evil.
We always joked about how there are no atheists in foxholes, which is true. Even i found myself praying when under artillery fire, but that didn't stop my buddies from getting blown up.
