the alleys a sick as spot to surf, typically its super mellow just rolling over until it gets to about 6 foot plus, then it starts to barrell. usually its super crowded with beginners and youd be lucky to get a wave but that stops at around 4 foot, when its empty its my favourite spot to surf

This my local break where I first caught my first wave at the age of 5. I'm now 43, mostly it a fun soft wave long walls through to laceys lane. Though went it gets 6-10feet it's heavy with thick lips and a good hold down which always fun.

Def some of the bigger makable ones. Cyclone Betsy at it's peak in 92 was perfect, clean, and 15ft - still the All-Time swell to hit The Alley (that I'm aware of in my lifetime - 45+ years). Sick slabby ones during Oma too, just not the clear, clean, and groomed perfection of Betsy which tracked as far south as the GC and was still categorised as a Cyclone. At that time ground swells were 5-6 metres and a 28 foot wave was recorded by a bouy off Straddie / The Seaway. The swell was at it's peak and perfectly clean for really only a day though at The Alley. Unfortunately it dropped SUPER SUPER quick too following the swing to persistent stiff offshores. Kirra was good too but HEAPS SMALLER. The Alley was out of control / not so makable for the few days prior to that one key perfect day.
Can't recall correctly if it was Cyclone Dorian which came later that year or the next, but pretty sure that one tracked as far south as Sydney, but was classed a tropical depression by then, and unfortunately didn't generate as perfect a swell. The early 90's were sick for Cyclones, esp at Burleigh and Kirra. Then of course in the later decades Oma, Seth and Gita also produced amazing waves. In particular, how good / long did we get amazing waves for from Gita!!!!! Bloody wave machine.

j posner this is the wave that is very well known to the locals and underestimated buy the international’s (everyone wants to go to snapper, d-bah, Kirra and Burleigh cause the have been featured on the tour throughout the years) but the alley can be fun or epic when big and you can get different sections over a 1km stretch from out behind the keyhole and pinnacle a fast section on the mid bank another fast walking section crossing the bar into laceys and good beachy sections from laceys cross bank right up to gutter section walk back to bar paddle a short distance across the bar and back to alley to do it all again

j posner snapper has a different rock formation and also there are no JetSki’s allowed at snapper unless it closed due to swell contest or sharks and Kirra is no longer like the days of old the sand is out almost to the reef and works very differently all three waves have a distinct shape and take off points and Kirra now only works on medium size swells 3ft + snapper always is surfable and on a small wave the alley doesn’t work all the way across the bar it will have 3-5 distinct breaks from the keyhole seperate section across the mid bank nothing infront of deep water from the bar and sometimes unmakable closeouts at laceys, it has been a significant amount of time since I have been out there as I now live in southwestern Victoria but over my junior years it never really changed to much apart from Kirra which cause of the sand pumping jetty at Fingal it changed that break a hell of alot
