    Fa'afetai lava for sharing our culture. I was born and raised in the U.S with minimal exposure to the true Samoan culture and kind of grew up with a warped idea of what it truly means to be a Samoan. Now, as an adult, I'm trying to educate myself more on Samoan cultural values because I want to embrace my culture, so thank you so much for making these videos.

      you are more than welcome. I grew up with little knowledge here in Australia so I wanted to make sure that resources were available to Samoans and non Samoans all over the world.

    Hello! I wanted to get your opinion on my situation. Recently did a dna test and found out that my great great grandfather was Samoan, however he never stayed with my grandmother so I do not know that much about him. I hardly know about the culture and I have only a little percentage in me, but I have a lot of respect for the culture and I’m learning more and more about it everyday. I want to learn more about my ancestors. Would it be offensive for me to get a Samoan tatau?

      For starters congratulations on your journey to finding yourself. Never let blood quantum stop you from trying to find out who you are. Getting a Samoan tatau is a special event and not one to take lightly. You need to give tautua to your family and your country. How you do this is not specified, but learning what you can about the Samoan culture is a start. Is your journey telling you that you are ready and that you have the knowledge and have given tautua?

    I want to get a Samoan honu/turtle tattoo but I'm trying to find someone who will help me figure out the meanings of the designs, to create it.

      Make sure when you talk to the tattooist you have those conversatations and if they don't know the meanings stand up for our culture and find another who does have the knowledge.

      @MeasinaSamoa so, me, I'm not Polynesian, but I do appreciate your culture and want that honu tattoo. But I am struggling to find someone near me that does understand the meaning. I was hoping you could/would make a video on that. That way I could understand.

    Can someone from other countries have Samoan tattoos ?

    • @MeasinaSamoa
      @MeasinaSamoa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It is preferred the pe’a and the malu be reserved for Samoans. There are those with close connections such as marriage and have given Tatum service to Samoa and their family who have received the traditional tatau. Peace Corp volunteers used to get the taulima around the arm to remember their time in Samoa as they did not want to offend by getting the traditional tatau. Many non-Samoans today have tattoos with Samoan motifs but not the traditional tatau. Knowing the meaning behind it gives value to our Samoan culture and shows you respect us enough to learn about it.

    Keep our tattoos for our people only. Nothing against other ethnics but even if they learn the meanings n all that, its jst a huge way for our tattoos to be a "watered down" thing. I know they look dope but it aint a fashion trend

      That's abit rich seeing as the complete meaning and its significance has been watered down. No samoan should be wearing that specific design it was tuiaana tamalelagi that wore this specific design that all of samoa has copied. Unless you are a descendant of his 10 children as in Tuala the oldest all the way to Salamasina the youngest, don't wear it. It's almost like a family crest thas been copied. Now that's going way back, add to that only the Alii use to get the pe'a and the malu was only worn by a taupou, which she would display when she dances. Only SHE dances. No pleb dances so why does a pleb get something that is considered sacred and a part of a taupous identity and status in samoan society. So something that was for nobles.....now is worn by anyone. I am samoan before and long after the arrival of tattooing so a tattoo doesn't define my blood my history does. The tattoo use to represent status, it's been nothing but a money grab in modern times. Which is why noone can come out and outright say why they got it. Got it for my parents.....got it to identify and be more in tune with my samoan culture.....yeah nah. It is nothing more than a tattoo tied to samoa now. An Alii wearing a pe'a is real....a taupou of Alii with a malu is real....status. outside of that what meaning is there? It's like any japanese getting body yakuza tattoos and they are not yakuza members. They got it because they feel like it's their culture. And now palagis are walking around covered in yakuza style tattoos. But like the Tatau their tattoos meant status and only status wore it.

    no disrespect to your culture but I just turned 30 and I don’t know wtf my culture is! I’m not African or American I’ve been on this planet 30 years doubt I’ll ever find out, but I do know I can’t afford to go to Samoa if I could I’d pay respects not everybody’s trying to culture vulture ❗️ seeing the rock the way your culture is the support the energy and those tattoos I always wanted one bad I wanna reference a warrior and slavery freedom and the animal I want to add is a panther it would be so dope it would tell my story and if I could, I would even show respect to Samoa 😅 if you actually read all of this, I’m just asking for a pass🤣🤣🤣

      Thank you for sharing this with us. Identity is a huge part of everyone's lives. Many of us have been influenced by other cultures. We can take that influence and share our knowledge and appreciate its beauty. But adopting a culture when it doesn't belong to us is appropriation. When my son did a dna test it told him he was actually part Tongan. Perhaps a DNA test could help you with your identity journey?

      Lol literally listened to a young lady explain, very well for that matter, about the meaning and history of Tattoos in the Samoan culture and u get Art of satan from that, lol?? I love how it’s said to treat one’s body like a temple yet I’ve still yet come across such a temple that was completely plain. No, usually beautiful sculptures, stained glass windows etc.. bringing their stories and history to life.

      @@YoDnAdDiVaD tattoo or ta ta a'u means to mark me. Use my blood as a sacrifice of spirits. Spirits you have no idea what they are. Tatau is spiritual. Marking your body, sacrificing your blood for the dead (demons). You have no idea how did it start. Give me a bible scripture that is talking about glasses and decorations. I bet you millions you can't go and write on the walls of the temple. That young lady you're talking about had no wisdom or experience what real demons do when malofie happens. What you think why they have to do a prayer to start. You have no idea what happen from the beginning. Tattooist also are witchcraft. Demons involved.
