One tip you didn't really mention that I feel is the most important tip is, KNOW YOURSELF! Are you a retired person that may have all day to dedicate to plant care or are you a busy married person, working full time with 3 children that have after school activities and own a family dog? Do you vacation several times a year or travel frequently for work? Do you want that jungle vibe in your home or are you looking for 1 or 2 statement pieces. Are you a "helicopter" plant parent that likes to hover over your plants or are you a set it and forget it type? Are you someone that needs almost instant gratification or are you happy to wait weeks or months to see results? Knowing yourself will help determine the type of plants to invest in, the number of plants you can successfully manage and the amount of time you have available to achieve the experience you're looking for.
Yes! This is a big one for me. I downsized on animals and started collecting plants. One of the stores we went to had beautiful pitcher plants, but I know I don't have the correct environment for them and know myself well enough to know I wouldn't keep up with what it needed. The whole reason I downsized in the first place was to lower the amount of responsibility I had so I didn't need to add to that with more demanding plants
I think your best tip is quality over quantity. Early on I think everyone has the urge to clear out the big box store to have an instant jungle, but I've been much happier with a carefully curated selection of plants that I actually want. It's better money spent, that's for sure. Thanks for another great, no-nonsense video.
Dave, I agree, or at least I do now. I am currently in the process of doing a big purge and giving away some of my plants that are no longer doing anything for me. I had over 300 plants in my house, which is crazy. I'm planning on keeping a select few and have decided to start small so I can appreciate their growth and their individual characteristics.
My number one enjoyment from growing plants is appreciating their individuality. Some of my plants definitely have their own agenda and it's fun to let them go rogue and produce surprisingly random growth, weird shapes and odd colours etc. I also like to see plants uniquely styled by people who really 'own' their plants.
I appreciate your approach and encouragement to others that not all plants are going to grow exactly the same and wherever we are they'll respond the same....if I still had every plant that I ever tried growing since I was a kid until now that frustrated me, I'd have the world's largest greenhouse! Sometimes some plants just don't make it.

Another fab video, Jan. It's vital to focus on the mindset of plant parenthood, as you can become completely overwhelmed by a defined set of 'rules' or by routine. I was completely paranoid about pests when I first started, just because of the shear amount of opinions out there. But when it happens it happens, you deal with it, learn and move on. Excellent information! I went crazy as a new plant parent and went from a few plants to around 60 in a small studio apt with one window (Thank you lock down). I killed a few until I paid attention to each plant and its needs in my apt. It is possible to add grow lights in ways that enhance your decor. Your spot on, soil is so important. A well draining mix made all the difference.

Thankyou Jan, In your experience, (other than the crawlers), do most Philodendrons climb, (I appreciate some clump). eg Pink Princess and similar. On another note, I was losing plants big time because of soil. I transplanted just about everything to your Aroid mix and everything has gone mental. I live on the Tropic of Capricorn line coastal and my climate is perfect. I got the nutrients on line that your using, the same size your showing and i was suprised how long that bottle is lasting, and I now have 12 poles, one I have extended. Yeah, I really got hooked on this. What I love about it is that it is so successful. cheers Jan.
I love the indoor plant community! So encouraging. Your posts/ video’s have def been inspiring me to explore this new avenue of indoor plant growth (moss poles) and I am loving it. I especially felt motivated when you said to not worry about making mistakes (aka killing a plant) because what’s the use of growing something that’s meh… better to take the risk, add the pole, cut the plant etc and see what happens. 👌👏🙌
I totally agree to all your TOP 10 tips for beginners. I like what you have also stated that we all do have different environment, this plant journey is not a race and we have to enjoy every moment of it. Been a Horty for 20 years and your tips have helped me a whole bunch. Indoor plants are not my speciality and you have given great advice, some that I never knew and was ever taught and some which refreshes and reminds me of things I should be doing but have gotten complacent and lazy. Your moss pole video made it simple and easy to follow and it reminded me that plants can go anywhere and everywhere. 6 moss poles can create the same effect as a living wall/vertical garden and they are easily moved. Now I'm looking for variegated versions of every climber I can find.🤣

This was a great video. And I agree, I buy plants that “fancy” me. I don’t care about species or genre. If it talks to me and keeps calling my name…I get it! lol I don’t care about trends either and I have about 200 healthy plants. From ordinary house plants to tropicals and I LOVE them all!

I have another tip for anyone who wants to grow the plants that you have: "to watch your channel's every single video and do as you say" my conditions are completely different from yours. I live in Iran (a desert in middle west asia) with very hot summer, very cold winter, very low humidity(less than 30) and not very good light in my apartment. I don't have access to your fertilizer, I even don't have access to sphagnum moss or 20cm see through pots or even good quality bark. so conditions are as different as it can be.but still you managed to make my plant journey ten times easier and better. if my plants could talk, they would definitely thank you. because you don't just show us what to do, you also teach us why to do that so we can understand it and customize everything according to our own conditions.

Another great video from my plant guru 💕 I have only recently started my indoor plant journey but went nuts purchasing too many different varieties. Some love my environment and thrive, and some are a constant source of stress. They're on notice, but maybe we need to go through this process to get to our happy place?
i think with potting mix it depends what you have access to and can afford. buying 3 or 4 different things to mix my own mixture is too expensive and doesn't work out very well. instead (because I'm in Victoria) I use native plant mix which is very much a heavy bark mixture which is amazing and my aroids don't have an issue with it (infact they're going banannas in the stuff.) I honestly think once you find out what sort of waterer you are as that will determine the mix you should use as for some people the standard potting mixtures you can buy is just fine.
I reckon just bark & perlite would be sufficient too but I like to be extra :D haha and yes, totally agree, your watering approach and substrate go hand in hand :)

Hi Jan, I'm curious for your input: I just repotted a bunch of my monsteras, but did so before binging your channel. I now fear my mix (2 parts compost, 1 part perlite, 1 part orchid bark) doesn't have enough oxygen for my roots. I also think the pots I chose for my big monsteras are too large. Is it worth re-potting again, with a better aroid mix and more appropriately sized pots, or do I risk freaking out the plant by replanting it too many times? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I feel like I'm coming out of my ignorance cave slowly but surely. Cheers
Hey, repotting them again could cause more shock so it’s a hard call to make. Given you have some bark snd perlite in there it shoukd be fine. Just be very concious about watering & keep a close eye on it :)
Do you pH adjust your nutrients with your low dose fertilised watering? Loving your videos, thought I'd share, I'm using manutec from Bunnings which is 2x concentration of GT and I dilute accordingly (2.5mL instead of 5mL per L)
Hi Jan! If I use anorganic substrate as a potting medium, but together with a moss pole - is it really that important to use a fertilizer specially for anorganic substrate? Because most of the root system grows inside the (organic) moss anyways and absorbs the nutrients there? However, thanks a lot for your great work :)
Hi Jan, what would you do with this system when you go away? The moss pole for me tends to need watering daily to every 3 days max depending on weather and because the soil holds no moisture, I can imagine going away would be catastrophic. Is a house sitter the only option??

A few months ago I purchased a Monstera Deliciosa and I got him a coco coir pole, but now I am thinking that I need to switch to a proper moss pole. Would it be too soon to disturb him again to switch his pole up? I'm not sure if I should do it now, or just give him a year and do it next year so I don't disturb the roots.

Thanks to u I just realized I'm using a nutrient that's focusing heavily on NPKs just as you mentioned but also contains copper, iron, bor, mangan, something I can't pronounce or even type 🤣 and zinc and now I'm totally confused!
Habe auch nach einer Alternative gesucht und den Hydrokultur Dünger (Hydropflege) von Mairol gefunden. Wird sehr schwach dosiert, und da meine Pflanzen an den MP. noch sehr jung sind, nehme ich imo auch nur die Hälfte der angegebenen Dosierung. Das kommt Jan's weakly weekly Ansatz sehr nahe. Ich verwende ihn auch für alle meine anderen Pflanze bei jedem giessen und die Pflanzen reagieren sehr gut darauf. Ich habe den Dünger direkt bei Mairol, für knapp 15€ incl. Versand bestellt. Eine Flasche reicht bei normaler Dosierung für 1000 l.😄

If I did this I would be stuck with succulents… which is not what I like… May be I should move cities 🤔

Hi Jan, what would you do with this system when you go away? The moss pole for me tends to need watering daily to every 3 days max depending on weather and because the soil holds no moisture, I can imagine going away would be catastrophic. Is a house sitter the only option??
Given I have a cat who needs looking after, a house sitter is my only option anyway :)
Thanks for this. I wish I had come across your account earlier. A few months ago I purchased a Monstera Deliciosa and I got him a coco coir pole, but now I am thinking that I need to switch to a proper moss pole. Would it be too soon to disturb him again to switch his pole up? I'm not sure if I should do it now, or just give him a year and do it next year so I don't disturb the roots.
That is up to you. Might also depends what season you’re in atm :) i’m sure u’ll make the right call :)

As I can't get my hands on foliage focus but have seen some other GT product available here in Germany: Have you ever seen/tried Formulex by GT and, if so, would this be comparable you think? Thanks to u I just realized I'm using a nutrient that's focusing heavily on NPKs just as you mentioned but also contains copper, iron, bor, mangan, something I can't pronounce or even type 🤣 and zinc and now I'm totally confused!
Sorry never used formulex :/ fertilisers can be confusing so I’d just ask other locals what they use and what has worked for them before :)
Habe auch nach einer Alternative gesucht und den Hydrokultur Dünger (Hydropflege) von Mairol gefunden. Wird sehr schwach dosiert, und da meine Pflanzen an den MP. noch sehr jung sind, nehme ich imo auch nur die Hälfte der angegebenen Dosierung. Das kommt Jan's weakly weekly Ansatz sehr nahe. Ich verwende ihn auch für alle meine anderen Pflanze bei jedem giessen und die Pflanzen reagieren sehr gut darauf. Ich habe den Dünger direkt bei Mairol, für knapp 15€ incl. Versand bestellt. Eine Flasche reicht bei normaler Dosierung für 1000 l.😄
