  • 20 YEARS A PRO NEWS Photographer
2004, 20 years ago, I walked into my local newspaper handed them some pictures I'd shot, and in the words of the late great Yosser Hughes said "give us a job I can do that". Incredibly the Chief photographer Warren Buckland must have been pretty desperate so actually gave me a shot. 20 years later I'm still there shooting for Hawke's Bay Today the best damn newspaper in New Zealand, no, literally the best. So as the mother ship is calling me away for a month or so I thought I'd go through some of my archives, and came up with this selection of images from 2008 that really struck a chord with me. You see In my humble opinion photography transcends life people come and go and when they're gone all we have left is our memory and photographs. It's vitally important to photograph every day. I love a good landscape in good light there is nothing more relaxing than waiting for the right conditions to photograph a mountain or a river love it, but they will generally not change much in your lifetime, but people, people change they arrive and they leave, the fashions change the hairstyles change for some they just bugger off completely, but it's people that matter. Documentary photography is my happy place. Photograph people because one day those people will leave us and overtime our memories can fade.
I'll be home soon Mum and Dad love you XX

From 1:58 to 2:59 - I felt this, and couldn't possibly agree more. I am always at least somewhat aware of this sentiment when I look at my favorite photos that I see often. But, when going through old hard drives and looking over thousands of photos that I haven't seen in years, some of which I forgot that I even took, it really hits hard. Time is funny that way. In some cases, an old photo that didn't seem at all special and was tossed aside, back then, suddenly today has a lot of meaning and gets brought to the surface.
Congratulations on 20 years and thank you for the video and insight.

Cheers mate yeah it;s a strange thing this came after a call from the homeland too so added to my mood. I think news moves so fast these days you rarely get a chance to reflect on the last job before you're onto the next then the next, then like you say some time later you look back and it hits you out of the blue. The minds a strange place for sure. Thanks for the comment mate really do appreciate it.

You have had a wonderful journey, that’s for sure, and your still living it.
It’s a service to future generations, recording visual history, something you can feel a sense of leaving a legacy.
In a hundred years people can look at Paul Taylor images and get an idea of our times.
    Well done mate.

I have some good friends I met in Beijing when I first came to China. They were teenagers in 2002 and now they're married with kids of their own. I was a profilfic amateur photographer (got my first digital camera in 2000) and have hundreds of photos of our lives back then, which trigger fond memories whenever we meet up. Memories that might have been lost forever were it not for those photographs. So yes, photograph everything. It's only disc space after all.
