Say what you want about Onward not being as memorable as the other Pixar classics, but it at least put a bit more effort with its modern take on fantasy elements, creatures and world building than this film did. Also, I like Zootopia and MFKZ better 🙄

In my experience any story that uses the relationship between fantasy races as a direct allegory for real-world racism will almost certainly fuck it up somehow. It usually just makes a bad mix of uncomfortable implications and lazy worldbuilding.

Another, travesty is that blacks only play villains in a film, like, New Jack City, where everybody's black, except, for, a throwaway part by Judd Nelson, which leads us to, yet, another, travesty, no studio would greenlight a, big-budget, film, without, white actors, (at that time).

///SPOILERS\\\: The ending to Trollhunter: Rise of The Titans was the worst ending to a franchise I've ever seen. Everything that happen, all the villains' defeats, the characters' relationships, everything they learned was all just erased from history. I love the franchise and most of the movie, but the ending ruined the franchise for me. Now whenever I rewatch each show I'll know that every moment doesn't matter since it's all gonna be deleted from existence later.
The ending contradicts itself too, like how the show keeps stating that the amulet chose Jim because he's the one to safe the world. But then the amulet choses Toby at the end because he was there first. What potential could Merlin possibly see in Toby? What's also weird is that Jim purposely introduced Strickler to his mother even though he was evil at this point. Strickler along with Bular, Angor Rot, Gunmar, Morgana and the Arcane Order won't hesitate the kill Toby as the trollhunter. Jim just gave his beat friend the worst burden he could have!
There was also an episode where Jim actually had a second chance to never find the amulet and he regretted it in the end. Even though Draal becomes the trollhunter, he still couldn't save the world. Jim's last words in the past (it was actually an illusion) was "Amulet or not, I am the trollhunter." Now he goes back to the past again and lets Toby become the trollhunter?! Draal couldn't even save the world, what chance does Toby have?!
I try to make myself forget about the ending but I can't. This ending really upset me. Rant over.

I’m currently taking a writing class at my college and a particular interesting book on it I’m reading talks about how authors get caught up in following rules rather than their own principles. I kind of feel the creator was not following his principles, but rather the rules of the formula that some may believe exist in genres like this. He may have wanted to make an epic like Star Wars, but many think it has be done a specific way with the subjects it tackles like the racism allegory’s. The bright have to be clearly shown as the victim’s in a way the audience will understand in the writers perspective rather than hoping the audience will understand a subtle message. Does that make sense?

15:44 I never expected a vanoss joke, but the fact it fits so well makes it really well-placed.
Also, something I’ve noticed about these movies tackling racism in a “metaphorical” scenario (if that makes sense) is that they always act like *nothing* has been done to combat the discrimination in the past or that there is no “fight” over it. Like has no orc tried to actually fight for orc rights, or orc equality?
Also why must these movies make everyone just blatantly racist other than the plot and metaphor demanding it? Most people wouldn’t care or simply keep their opinions to themselves; usually they come out subtle, meant to degrade without feeling like a direct insult. It’d hit harder having one guy be the openly racist one, while others hold him back or tell him to stand down, or maybe they just stand around and let him do his thing because they don’t want to be seen supporting either side (maybe they’re racist themselves).
At least with zootopia, despite its flaws, gave reason on why people were becoming openly racist; predators were “reverting to their primal ways”, and people were scared that they would be victims of another predator snapping. It made sense.
Lastly, these movies often fail in telling their message cause they go for the “metaphor” route. Ironically their message doesn’t work because it ends up equating discriminated people to the discriminated race in the movie (often aliens or magic beings as seen here), so it’s basically saying that they’re not human (even if you include the “they should be treated equally” message). *Yikes*

For the longest time, I have wanted to write stories of my own regarding transformations, either into animals or the opposite sex. Animal transformation stories have plenty of good examples, but gender transformation are more difficult to find quality products. Not impossible, such as body swap films like Freaky, but definitely rare. Still, I watch them and I take what i like and I learn from what I don't like, and maybe one day I'll be able to write my own. So keep at it, Raisor!

What makes the line “Fairy Lives Don’t Matter” sound worse is that, out of context, it would sound like a slurred slogan against LGBTQ+ individuals. Think about it. Folks in the community already have been called that, so using that term in a movie that’s supposed to cover prejudice is pretty sus, and in general a terrible line. Who thought this was a good idea? Wow, i forgot how bad this movie was, and honestly, there's a lot they could easily have fixed if they could get enough thought into it. Like the dark lord example, maybe the reason everyone is so unhinged about him is that maybe moments before his defeat, he caused this massive cataclysmic event that eradicated a good portion of the races in this world (to explain why the lack of variety) and the amount of people who can use magic are reduced tremendously Hence, why everything looks like LA.
The inferni could have been a part of the shield of light but later detached themselves from it to bring back the dark lord in order to undo the damage in the world and return magic by anything means necessary

I would have had the magical races come through a temporal tear to escape a catalysmic disaster. This occurs in the past like the 60s or the 90s. Like in Alien Nation, where they arrive in a spaceship. They are a slave race. Essentially space refugees. These would be magic refugees. In this new realm magic does not work. However instead of finding a wand, the evil elves want to make a magic wand again that would give them power in this world.

Apart from that, I didn't have much gripes with the film when i watched it, I thought it was fine but i also would have liked Jakoby to be the bright and think most your criticism is fair.
Also I find that the decision to make the predators the victims in zootopia is a major flaw rather than a minor one considering they clearly have all the meaningful influential power and even a history of genocide against the herbivores that's so recent they still make reference to it casually. Its pathetic how hard the creators tried to make the predators the persecuted ones and we all know its just because people like cats and dogs which ironically shows the species bias we have against the animals who are the real victims. Not really a good reference for 'how to do this type of movie correctly' but better than Beastars.

But it’s not so good to talk about it if you show the topic in the same way Bright did. And yeah it hard to believe that a PG rated film that can be universally watched by anyone can cover a more mature topic that a R-18 rated film for adults. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the bit at the end where it's revealed that Layla and Tikka are sisters. It's so dumb because it doesn't add anything to the movie and Layla dies right afterward so it's not like this is set up for the sequel or something. It's so pointless.
Otherwise. Great video. Nice to see a complete and utter takedown of this movie from someone who also considers it his least favorite movie of all time.

It’s like you walked into my brain and transcribed my every thought about this waste of 2 hours of my life. I have sat in one spot staring straight ahead for 2 hours and got more out of that than this film.
I really thought the film was going to prove that the Dark Lord wasn’t a bad guy. He was like Mandela but he was demonized by the elves because history is written by the victors. I thought the elves were going to be the real bad guys, with Ward and Jakoby would dismantling the system. Subsequent films could then study the power vacuum.
You also hit all my thoughts on Zootopia. I remember watching it and thinking “Disney green lit this?” That movie was so effing heavy. There was no way humans could have played that. The cartoon worked because it was able to bring to life real fears. Whereas with humans, even cartoon humans, it would have been parody.

One thing that I think Winx Club did well is keeping magic on Earth. It would have been so easy to just erase and retcon season 4 out of existance (like they do with Roxy, the fairy pets, character development, the characters aging and becoming adults, etc.) to keep the easy status quo. I mean, they do keep seemingly resetting the girls' ages back to 16 because it's easier to generate plots when they're still students, but magic on Earth never goes away.
Magic was not really allowed on Earth in seasons 1-3 and even kinda at the very beginning of season 4, but once the people of Earth learn about magic, they accept it as part of life. Well, magic did used to exist on Earth, so it was more like reintroducing it to the people, and even that took basically all of season 4 to do. From season 5 onward, no one bats an eye when the girls transform or have magic laser battles or use magic to fix an oil spill and then turn the oil rig into an eco-friendly wind and solar power generator (yes, that happens).
I have a big bone to pick with the show, especially seasons 5-8, but I commend them for not getting rid of magic on Earth.

On the subject of Rotten Tomatoes being reliable, the critics already review these films on other websites (RT gives links to their reviews on other websites) and weren’t a reason for people to watch films in the first place. Movies are always subjective no matter what anyone says.

As someone who wants to create stories for a living the fact so many projects get greenlit when the people behind them have no passion whatsoever drives me crazy, I don't know about you guys but I can tell when the people behind a project (tv show, movie, book, comic book, whatever) did it because they actually believed in it and when they did just for a paycheck, sometimes it takes me a while to perceive that and other times it's blatantly obvious.

Want something very much like Bright but done right? Where humans learn about Magic and it doesn't suck? Look up ShadowRun. It's not modern time, it's actually near future Cyberpunk, but in that setting magic came back in 2011 and changed the world. Now we cabals of immortal elves, dragons CEO of giant megacorporation, the Native Americans tribes who reclaimed their lands and formed the Native American Nations....
Main issue, it's a RPG setting, there's no show, no movie. Just an old 1990 promo, a few video games, the novels and the glorious tabletop RPG.

this kind of worldbuilding is just lazy
all they did was take the ordinary world and haphazardly staple on fantasy elements in a purely surface level way
onward had a similar problem and that nearly killed the movie for me
in the end if you really want to have a movie where the normal world and the magical world need to interact with each other either stick with the hidden world option or actually try to explore how it would effect the world.
