Mine was the little white relay by battery. Had a crack in it that let dirt it. You should hear it click every time you cycle the key on and off. Opened it up to see inside, plugged it in and turned key on/ off, should be able to see it operating. Hope this helps, spent a lot of time checking everything else.

it's the push start button you need to replace the whole "cluster" in the handlebars they wear out it's pretty common

If you are totally dead, but have a good battery, it may be the main fuse. On my Big Bear it is a 20 amp fuse under the seat, front right side at the base of the gas tank. Mine is just like yours, give it a look.

My 1998 Yamaha Big Bear does the exact same thing, but my red light comes on when I press the start button. I ended up bypassing the switch with my own plunger switch I wired in, but I believe the problem is a relay. My friend's quad ('04 BB) has same problem and turned out to be a relay under the seat by battery. Your model is the old school big bear where battery is under the fender. If I can find the relay on mine I'll let you know since our quads look about the same.

OG BB did you find the relay?

My Big Bear did this as well. Check the battery to frame ground, mine was in bad shape loose and corroded. You can pick up a cheap one at Wal-Mart and cut to size if you have to......hope this helped

There is a fuse inside the left wall under the seat. Pull the fuse housing apart and pull out the fuse. It’s likely shot. Replace the fuse and it should start again. Worked for me.

Check the wires going to the solenoid for 12 volts with the start button pressed.if no response, back up to the start button.make sure you are getting 12volts to the button from the ignition switch.you can test the solenoid by simply shooting across the solenoid from battery wire to starter wire,if it starts you have a bad solenoid.if you are not getting a green start light chech the gear shift neutral switch for an open circuit.

I checked the push button and found a lot of corrosion which caused the "no contact". It was easy to remove and clean. Problem solved!

Your battery may have enough power for the lights but not enough amperage to turn the starter or it could be the starter cylenoid?

Mine did the same thing and all I did was replace the wires going to the batteries and that's what fixed it does wires go bad really easy I've had to replace them twice

If it's the original battery replace it first. Turn headlights on try to start with button. If lights go off when you push the start button the battery needs replacing.

Mine is a 1995 Yamaha Kodiak 400, my fan doesn't kick on, but when I tested it straight with a battery it worked fine. For some reason, the switch at the connector isn't getting any power. I have looked all over this thing and can't find but one single fuse, people say there are relays and a fusebox, but I sure can't find it. The red fuse link by the gas tank is the only one I can find, it's not broken or burnt. Any suggestions??

What was the solution? I have a 1990 Big Bear. It has a new battery, starter relay, and positive battery cable. The lights work. The main fuse is intact. Nothing at the push button. I can jump start it by going directly from the positive battery terminal to the starter pole while grounded to the frame. I'm not sure how to test any of the relays. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

for anyone who hasn't found their trouble yet. mine was doing same thing, changed solenoid and didn't fix it. I found that the 3 wire plug on the solenoid had one connector that corroded in two. found it by holding start button and jiggling wires around.
