Yep, it totally does. Plenty of herbivores eat baby birds that are lying on the ground. Just about everything eats baby birds that are lying on the ground. Baby birds are a bizarrely convenient food source.
It turns out that plenty of herbivores eat meat when they get a convenient source of meat. It's probably impossible for them to constantly eat meat, but the occasional meat is perfectly fine. It might even be necessary for some herbivores.
Nature is a lot more weird and disturbing than people realize.

Once had a Shetland that killed peacocks for no obvious reason. They weren't eaten at all, just pawed into the ground. She was a strangely aggressive one in general

I don't know if the writer is vegan but this actually sounds like humor in hardcore vegan circles and I love it. The voice acting is stellar too.

@@user-cp3le5li1t I think the joke is that they're vegan but you catch stuff every now and then like them raising pigs in pens, requiring the show creators to clarify that they are for hunting truffles when the fans brought it up. Or fish, leading to clarification that it's for the animals (Fluttershy is shown feeding animals meat at various points) and/or living with the obligate carnivores like the Griffins (At least one of whom lives in Ponyville, issue 70 of the comic). Or pastries, leading to clarification it's vegan pastries and cakes. AFAIK nobody brought up the baby bird thing to the show writers, but you can bet this would have been similar to their response.
Griffons also eat deer. Or used to. It's mentioned in the comics but has absolutely wild implications since deer are sapient creatures you can have a conversation with in universe.
Heartthrob’s voice actress did such a good job, it sounds so accurate to that era of mlp

I like that there's a cultured person that knows that sometimes herbivores like cows, deer, horses, etc eat birds.
Carnivores evolved into herbivory by growing longer guts or multiple stomach chambers to be able to digest tough plant cells. Digesting flesh and bones is easy compared to that, they never lost the ability to do it. Small mammals like mice and dead bodies are also eaten by deer, etc.

@@georgesiv2082birds get injured, sometimes they even get caught, I've seen videos where deer catch birds from the air and eat them. Fledgelings and baby birds can be easy prey to even an animal without adaptations to make them more apt predators.

As a vegan, I do hate it when people try and say "Look at how kind animals are! There are so many vegan animals out there!".
No, they are not... They are opportunists, they could not care less about anything... They just do whatever is easiest, not that different from most humans in a way... Just follow the path of least resistance.

Veganism is only real if it comes from within and not from some lame external attempt to shock or convince you of some global morality or "The better way", it's all garbage and most vegans stop being so after around 4 years because passion, feelings and shock go numb after a while.
Our world isn't vegan, the only thing that matters in life - is what carries on.
Anything else is just play-pretend to matter.

They're captured nearly every episode of the original cartoon, it seems. Somebody was always fucking with them. Their world was like occasional towns populated by friendly goblins or other ponies, or sentient balls of pubic hair...and everything else there wanted to kill, enslave, eat you, turn you to stone, freeze you to death, flood the world and drown you, turn you to glass, or some other evil crap.
I watched this without knowing there was a prequel and this arrangement slaughtered me, I just was immediately sold into this narrative

A lot of large "herbivores" eat birds and small rodents. Cows, dears, horses, goats, antelope, ect. And most of the time it's not on accident. They usually do it anytime an opportunity presents itself.
