- A playthrough of Toho's 1994 license-based action game for the SNES, Super Godzilla.
With Godzilla: King of the Monsters releasing in theaters last week, I thought it only appropriate to revisit one of my favorite licensed-based games on the SNES.
The 8 and 16-bit Godzilla games tended to be quite a strange breed. You might expect a game featuring giant city-destroying mutants to play out like a beat 'em up, but oddly enough, many of the early ones didn't. The NES got two Godzilla strategy games, while the Gameboy got a puzzle game. Seriously.
And then we come to Super Godzilla. I actually have no idea how to qualify this style of gameplay - I've never played another game like it. I guess it could be described as a kaiju walking simulator of sorts, wherein the titular 80,000 ton lizard regularly gets accosted by other giant creatures as well as aggressive alien drones that resemble subway cars floating beds on ball bearings.
You have to steer Japan's favorite harbinger of doom across six different areas, searching for clues and power-ups, wiping out attack drones, and finally, going toe-to-toe with the likes of Biollante, King Ghidorah, Battra, Mecha-Godzilla, Mecha-King Ghidorah, or Bagan before being shuttled along to the next area.
You stomp around primarily using the tiny little map at the bottom of the screen, and this is so that the majority of the screen can be used to show giant close-ups of Godzilla doing his thing. The icons on the map indicate all points of interest, including important bits of info that'll help in finishing the mission.
After you've stomped around for awhile and landed yourself under attack, you are presented with a super quirky battle system that feels a bit like tug-of-war. You punch the enemy, and then start backing up to build power for your attack. The farther back you walk, the more attack power you build, but you lose all power if you're attacked before letting off your move. It's very strange at first, but it's an easy system (however unconventional) to grasp.
So like I said, it's fairly difficult to categorize this one. I think that's why I like it so much - it feels distinctly different from your average monster-themed brawler. It feels how I had always imagined controlling Godzilla would feel. The plodding pace of the game makes it truly feel like you are in control of a skyscraper with legs, and though the animation is pretty limited, the pixel art is fantastic, as is the sound. All of the classic roars and attack sounds are crystal clear, and the music does a nice job of mimicking the old-school kaiju soundtracks.
It's neither a difficult nor long game and the gameplay is fairly anaemic, but to leave it at that would be to sell the game short. It succeeds at making you feel as if you were in control of Godzilla, and there was a lot of care and effort into making it look and sound as much like the movies as possible.
If that sounds good to you, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I did. This one really is a huge question of personal taste.
*I had previously done a recording of Super Godzilla, but it was getting old and the picture was a bit fuzzy, so this is a brand new, 60fps HD playthrough to replace it.

You have to give this game some credit, It made Bagan, an unfortunate concept Kaiju who never got to see the light of day, a actual time to shine.
Super Godzilla was the first kaiju game that I ever played that effectively nailed the feel of walking around as a giant rubber suit, and even today that feeling still holds up. Its gameplay is completely oddball, but if you've ever wanted to smash a city as a 16-bit mega monster, this is awesome.

This game's great! Love how it captures the campy charm of the old-school kaijus. ...And it feels a little bit like an RPG, like Pokemon or something, which, understandably, is not _everyone's_ cup of tea, but I'll be damned if this beast is ever going to brute force or Hyper Beam his way out of everyone's hearts! You can't help but admire the people of Tokyo, having a massive abomination terrorize the city every other week for over 50 years. You get used to it.
I used to play it at my aunts house then played it again when i got older and learned very quickly how much i hate Mecha Godzilla and Battra in this game

I just skipped everything when I was a kid, and I could never beat Biolante. I tried so many times, but her tentacles kept fucking me up. This is actually the first time I’ve ever seen past her fight

Going to see Godzilla King of the Monsters a few years ago and hearing these themes in the movie took me back to my childhood. I remember playing this game as a little kid and loving every moment of it. Then seeing Godzilla on the big screen followed by the Super Godzilla remix was just too much for me.
I remember as a kid not being sure if this game was bad or if I just sucked at it.
I love the attack animations they make me wish this had just been a turn based RPG

This game took me so long to beat because I had to hit every special point , and it always bothered me there weren’t any ways to save progress. Still, thank you for this. I woke up thinking about it lol. It’s nice to see an obscure game from my childhood that I cherished.

@@gunsharck Yes I was. I had a full time job at 8 years old delivering newspapers after school. I saved the bit of my pay I got to keep for months to get Super Godzilla.

I wasn't ready for next gen in '97 neither. So many SNES and Genesis games yet to be played, and Saturn, PS1, and 64 wasnt worth retail price. I wasn't spoiled nor rich, we didn't even have internet yet and it would be a while til i discovered emulation.

The intro sounds like someone recreating the Godzilla theme with their flatulence, but besides that, this game seems pretty cool.
Awesome I remember getting all the way to Mecha King Ghidorah when I was a kid playing this then my Mom yelled downstairs for me to go to bed and there was no save feature. Glad to see what I would've been up against lol

I like how Godzilla gets a Varia Suit upgrade right near the end there. Haha.
I had this game as a kid! My little brother LOVED Godzilla! (We grew up on the old black n whites) so my parents got this for him mostly. It was a challenging game man, like even for him and he was the one who could beat a rental game in like 24 hrs.
I still love playing this game on emulator from time to time.
It's cool how the US release uses the older Black Hole aliens MechaGodzilla (the original version uses MechaGodzilla II) because MechaGodzilla II wasn't available internationally yet and so most US audiences wouldn't recognize it.
I also remember being able to (only once each)...
- Reach the second Battra before it could mutate. (Gotta love how it just pops like a balloon, as the video shows.)
- Get the S Energy and become Super Godzilla against Mecha King Ghidorah and just barely being able to reach him before Tokyo was 50% destroyed (a few seconds after being warned about 45% being destroyed; Mecha King Ghidorah just happened to be on the side of the map closer to me rather than the far side like he tends to be), which allowed me to instantly become Super Godzilla again when Bagan's stage began.

In the beginning, I never got past Biollante. But then I did and enjoyed the rest of the game.
I remember getting this game for Christmas when I was 13 I got to open the gift early on Christmas Eve. Long story short, my mom was upset I beat the game 4 hours later. 🤦🏾♂🤦🏾♂🤷🏾♂🤷🏾♂🤣🤣😂😂

With the force field and that damn triple-slam attack, Mecha-G was the biggest pain in the ass in the game. Most times, I just ended up using tail whips and body slams to take him out.

I used to have this game:
Pros: Monster roars, 8-bit Godzilla theme, classic Mechagodzilla cameo, punching Biollante's tentacles away was a good way to start the boss battle, turning Godzilla into Space Godz- I mean, "Super Godzilla"- was fun, if you're good enough, you can do it to fight Mecha King Ghidorah.
Cons: Walking everywhere gets boring, walking into buildings gets annoying in later stages, too many UFO's, getting close to Mechagodzilla (either you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about or you have no idea), game isn't long enough (and they shouldn't have started with King Ghidorah as the first boss).

This is a decent game, but seriously, WHY did it take until the damn PS2 era to get a real no bullshit Godzilla game? You figure giant monsters fighting each other and destroying everything in sight would be something game developers would be able to get right from the very get go, but they kept doing weird puzzle games or hex based simulators. The formula was simple, monster stomp, monster smash, monster RAAAWWWRR, but damn if it didn't take forever for them to realize that. Even non Godzilla licensed games like Crush, Crumble, and Chomp were weird and anything but straight forward. I guess King of the Monsters on the Neo-Geo was about the best game of that type we'd get for years.
Well, we had decent Godzilla games, but they were only released in Japan.
Godzilla Kaijuu Daikessen (SNES), and Godzilla (Arcade).
Why we couldn't get those games? I don't know, but it better be a good reason behind it.

This is a good start for a Godzilla game like this. I think they should try again just add selectable monsters after you complete the main story like Godzilla VS (PS4) and also have a Vs mode! Story mode with Godzilla or Story with other monsters that have somewhat unique stories to each, and a VS mode, Online and offline just have a VS mode. Selection on skins for Goji and the others Showa, Hesei, Millennium, Legendary skins. All that jazz
This game actually doesn't look bad. It's like an rpg. Or a yu gi oh game but simple.

I feel that this one of the games that AVGN did a little bit of a disservice to of being overly critical off. Seems like a really nice game to me. It looks like it should and the monsters you expect to have are there. Sound is great as well.

This is a blast from the past. If memory serves, holding the D pad speeds up Godzilla a little bit. Neither Super Godzilla or Bagan unleashed their ultimate attacks. Sad face

Cuándo era más chico yo la verdad como mucho llegaba a Biollante, ahora hace creo que 2 años lo volvi a jugar este juego (Me costo algo agarrarle la mano al juego para entenderlo) y resulta que no fue tan dificil (Si eso sí, me dio pelea) y finalmente me pude pasar el juego completo y senti una gran satisfacción al no poder completarlo de niño ahora lo pude xd

The Year 199X mysterious message suddenly arriyes announcing a general attack on all of Japan 🇯🇵🇰🇷🎎🎍🎌🎋🎉🎉🎏🎐🎑. Then, just as in the message, first King Ghidorah appears in Osaka and starts to tear the city apart. Helpless before the monster, the Self-Defense Agency turns its eyes to Godzilla, sleeping at the bottom of the Sea of Japan 🍜🍛🍚🍙🍘🍣🍤🍥🍡🍲🍲🍢🏯🌁🎠🎡🎢🏙, as its final weapon.
The Godzilla did a new enemy appears in King Ghidorah very people I question times with her destroy the city seens more to King of the Monsters is final hope.
Love to see how heisei takes the only godzilla to become super and defeat someone more powerfull than destroyah

The game is short, kids in 1993 didn't have high expectations for video games and neither did a TV production. But for a 1.5 hour gameplay, it was immersive and full of unique experiences and music that could grip kids with short attention span over and over again. Big fan of repeating patterns.
