  • Janet Yellen’s tenure as Federal Reserve chair (from 2014 to 2018) saw significant employment increases and rising markets in a vastly different political climate from today. She sits down with Paul Krugman-Nobel laureate, New York Times columnist, and GC distinguished professor-to discuss her time at the Federal Reserve and what the future may hold for the U.S. economy. Yellen, who is professor emerita at the University of California Berkeley, currently serves as a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Presented on December 10, 2018, by GC Public Programs and the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality. This event is part of the series The Promise and Perils of Democracy.

Enormous amount of respect for Krugman's capacity to Listen. A noble prize winner who understands the value of listening. Of course listening to Yellen isn't tolerance but enlightenment.

I really want to hear her views now in light of the pandemic. She worries about what would happen if there’s another crises when countries already at zero or sub zero interest rates, and now here we are. Really interesting interview, hearing about the financial crisis from the inside.

They lower interest rates, guarantee mortgage loans for the uncreditworthy, and then blame banks for “irresponsible” lending

The fed, the commercial banks, and even private individuals taking out mortgages all contribute to the same, unfair system that generally benefits both property owners and those closest to the creation of new money at the expense of everyone else.

When we talk about no inflation as a result of QE and low short term interest rates to what extent are we leaving out the subsequent inflation of stock and real estate markets. I know that has nothing to do with the CPI figure.
