    I just bought a very similar model, a Smith Corona "Corsair" ("Made in Canada" stamped on it). I need to do a little work on it. Your video was very helpful. Thank you.

    Very similar to my Corsair and the best video I have seen on them. You are very helpful. I bought the Munk manual also.

    My sister has a Smith Corona Corsair Deluxe that is almost identical. She got it for Christmas sometime in the mid seventies so your suspicion is right about in being seventies vintage. I used it for years until I got my 1953 Smith Corona Sterling. Those little Smiths are fantastic machines.

      Oh, and the white mark next to the typing position is to align your paper if you have removed a typed page and have reinserted it. Centre the white mark under a typed character and you have your page properly aligned and you resume typing on said page. I works very well.

    Very nice little typewriter. I can see you taking that on your scooter for a freestyle reporting ride. Thanks for the video Joe!

      Nice looking machine. I do think it’s very similar to my Super G which in many regards is identical apart from the plastic shell. I have heard though that these come out of the factory with wobbly text a bit those those awful plastic Memory Keepers ones they sell now. You might be able to exact some improvement but I think you’ll be wasting your time since they stated off life like that and even the quality of the metal used for the hammers is probably soft and dubious. But of course who am I to tell you, it’s your machine. I just use mine for writing shopping lists for that reason and have accepted that is a poorly made machine that will type badly. Im at peace with mine however because it wasn’t that expensive and mine was designed to look like a Lamborghini Countach or similar.

    Very complete review and very interesting new characters from my Made in England SCM Corsair! It's very nice that it comes with the @ and ¢ signs!

    There is on market an spanish keyboard version, the name is Medalla de Oro, I thought was a clone, but I see in the pictures of the advertisement that it's a real Smith Corona, I'm not sure to by it, but seen you video I think it could be a good option of ultra portable, thank you.

    My great aunt's 1970s Smith Corona Super G also lacks a 1 key.

    These videos are so great! I recently got a SCM Corsair Deluxe as my first typewriter. I “borrowed” one of those springs holding the removable top panel to replace the missing one from the carriage return bar. It had some other stuff wrong with it but it’s been a good machine to learn some basic repair stuff on, though getting the case off is a bit annoying

    I just bought one of these online and immediately busted one of the ribbon spools. It works great with minimal wear and grime. Can't wait to get new spools and a fresh ribbon then start writing again.

    Love the color, it's so cute!
    Jealous of the popcorn though lol... are you eating popcorn out of a vintage Corningware dish Joe?

    I bought an Olympiette in the late 70s; you had to use the L to type number one. I wrote my second and third year uni essays on that. When I graduated I bought an electric Smith Corona Electra Automatic, which I loved till the A dropped off its bar!

    Great walkthrough! I just bought the same machine (white) at a thrift-store. Getting ready to do some cleaning on it, so your video is very helpful. 2 questions: 1) how much did you pay for this typewriter, 2) did it come with the popcorn? Thank you. 🍿😎👍

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can't recall, but the cost was minimal. Popcorn, however, was extra. But with butter and salt.

      Joe Van Cleave Ha, well I just cleaned up mine today (almost identical) and it’s in great shape. I’m waiting on a new ink ribbon. The ribbon vibrating mechanism seems quite fragile and I’m trying to avoid breaking it. However I’m not quite sure how it works. I want to remove the old ribbon and drop in the new one. I know about the undersized spools so I plan to wind the new ink ribbon onto the old spools. Video request: could you demo how to replace the ribbon on this machine, please? That would be super helpful. Thank you.

    Fun, the lower case d is unique in this machine.

    How are the ribbon spools removed? My cougar seems to have spools that have a screw down the shaft??

      Stuart Todd you just really have to pull. I had this problem. They are in that tight

      I’m curious about the ribbon change process as well, specifically the ribbon vibrator mechanism. I can’t quite figure out how to release the ribbon from the mechanism. Anyone know how to operate this part?

    Hi Joe thanks for the excellent work you do. I picked up this exact machine,the type bars are misaligned n the type bar sleeve is pretty worn out. Can I replace it with a rubber one? When you type the letters ain't in a straight line, some are higher than others

    Looks exactly like the typewriter I have. I have not used it in decades. But mine is called the Corsier and made in England.
    I would love to get it going again, would you happen to know what the replacement ribbon works on them?

      I searched on Ribbons Unlimited's website for your model and here's what I found: www.ribbonsunlimited.com/category-s/12685.htm

    Hello ! Can you help me to know the differense between a Smith Corona Corsair and Smith Corona Calypso ? Thanks

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't see them listed on the Typewriter Database, but the Calypso sounds like a later version similar to the Corsair, with a mostly plastic body shell.

    May I know that Smith corona coarsa and Underwood 319 which is better quality and lighter weight?

    • @fjc2722
      @fjc2722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I own the SCM Cougar Deluxe and sold the Underwood 319. The 319 is larger, and it has a very tall and upright keyboard that is not comfortable to use. The Cougar is a great little machine.

    Hi Joe, I have this same typewriter & the ribbon doesn't move upward when I type. Thus, the keys aren't striking the ribbon. What sort of adjustment is needed to fix this?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check the ribbon color selector switch, to the right of the keyboard, if it’s set to the middle position the ribbon won’t move up.

    • @valeriasharp-wilson4417
      @valeriasharp-wilson4417 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It doesn't matter if that selector switch is on black, white or red, the ribbon holder doesn't raise upward when typing.

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Okay, another idea is to check the margin settings, at the top rear of the carriage. If they are moved toward the middle, so you're always at the right margin, it will prevent the type bars from full movement and also keep the ribbon from coming up. Either move the right margin all the way to the right, or hit the margin release key.
      Do the type bars come all the way up when the keys are pressed? Is the ribbon properly threaded through the autoreverse guides? When you operate the keys, do the ribbon spools turn?
