      Very true! Everyone deals with stuff differently I think… for some making content etc would be their worst nightmare which is totally fair, but I like to keep busy & continue to work on things. Thanks for watching!

    Callum - I am so gutted for you. Watched it live with my son (23) who is a great athlete himself. Your content is truely inspirational for him to progress further in the sport. Thank you, and as you display yourself - when the going gets tough…just keep going. Good luck and 🤞🤞for successful surgery and subsequent rehab.

    I got spiked at the intercounties XC recently and after (painfully) finishing the race saw I had a 1 and a half inch hole down my heel. Medics examined it and said the spike missed my achillies by a whisker before stitching it up. Watching this makes me properly realise how bloody lucky I was!
    All the best for your recovery and a very inspiring attitude to it

    Your mindset on this is incredible. I'm almost tearing up on your behalf watching this video, thinking how I'd react personally. I'm definitely going to bank this video in case I ever need perspective on something like this in my own life! Can't wait for the rest of this series. I know it's not what you had in mind when you were thinking of creating a series that addressed all aspects of pro running a while ago, but severe injury/surgery/return to fitness seems to be something a decent amount of pro runners experience, and I can't wait to see what insights you boys bring to the process.

      Thanks mate, appreciate it. Everyone deals with things differently so I don’t think there’s a “right” way… generally speaking in all walks of life I tend to deal best with emotions by being busy / channelling it in to other things / trying to take a positive. It’s not always the best as you do need time to be angry/upset/frustrated & properly deal with emotions! Will talk about it more in future videos :)

    Saying something like "look on the bright side" probably won't help one bit but, given your relatively recent ascent into the upper tier of 1500 running, 2028 was am,ore realistic goal for your Olympic dream. Making the team this year was always going to be tough given that Kerr and Wightman will almost certainly be picked if they show any sort of form this summer.
    Injuries suck! I have had four operations on my Achilles - nothing like as serious as yours - and you will get over them. The difficult bit comes in several months time when you start running again. You have to be so disciplined to restrict the amount of running you do in the early stages. You want to run, you are reasonably fit beacause of all the cross training you have been doing and running seems to be pain free. So easy to rush things and cause problems in places other than the injured Achilles! Good luck, stay storng in the dark days (there will be lots of those) and rely on friends, family to get you through.

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suspect in 2028 we'll see more Brits with the Olympic Standard than we will in 2024... but that largely depends on how high they choose to set the bar. Of course this year was a long shot, but I do believe if I could get the time ticked off, I did have a serious chance at pulling something off at UK Champs... anything can happen in one race. Alas, we'll never know!

    Now you will understand more why so many people miss indoors and prefer to do X-Country and build more strength and stamina. Too many unnecessary risks if you want to concentrate on summer - been like this for 40+ years [also RAF Cosford was out only indoor track]. You will learn from it and I wish you a smart and speedy recovery.

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Easy to comment in hindsight… if I’d won the World Gold would you have still said it was an unnecessary risk? All the top Paris medal contenders (Kerr, Hocker, Nordas, Nuguse, etc) have all races multiple times indoors this year… not too risky for them. It was a freak accident that could literally also happen in XC. It wasn’t burnout or overuse - which is why many athletes remain hesitant with indoors 👍🏼

    Hey loved the video, I’m a 17 year old who’s been running for 3 years at about 40-50km per week. How much mileage would you say I need weekly to get under 17 minutes in the 5k, current pb is 18:31. Thanks and best of luck with recovery!

    • @the.distanceproject
      @the.distanceproject  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would prioritise the quality of the sessions at your age and not worry too much about mileage. Just get in 2x sessions & a solid long run… everything else easy and low volume

    Hi Callum, all the best for your surgery and rehab - sounds like you're in the right place mentally…🫡
    My question for a future episode is on race pace tactics - what are the factors that determine how 'slow' or 'fast' a given race will be run, who/how many dictate it…and if that varies across the course of the race?
