i disagree with your point of view on the smile scene. she's not trying to hide the pain, she's trying to show that they can't break her and her family, and in spite of everything they'll remain happy.
Hi! I'm going to add a little more context to the film: All of of the songs that the family listens at the house are musics from musicians that got censured during the dictarshiop and the songs that we listen on the radios are popular songs, but from artists that were complict with the regime. When the military comes to kidnap Rubens you can see them lurking around, looking at their vinyl collection and books, they were actually looking for "subversive" material. Also: the helicopter thar flies by them at the beach, were used to drop bodies at the sea. We only found about that about that decades later. Walter was very clever about that, but again: you have to be brazillian to know that I really dont know why it didnt got nominated for adapted screanplay :(
