You can’t help but appreciate not only how awesome a player he is here, but also the fact that he plugged his piano into a chorus generator and was able to duplicate to some small degree the sound created by Robbie Buchanan. And, he isn’t even using the Dyna-my-Piano mods, is he?
Funk Maestro & Key Extraordinaire Jeff Lorber is the Frank Zappa of Jazz, Played & Introduced so many Incredible musicians, Paying homage the the Great David Frank
It's just awesome that he grew up right around the corner from me. He just helps to give Cheltenham it's recognition for musical talent, adding to the impression left behind by Michael and Randy Brecker. It's local musicians like Jeff Lorber and Ken Ulansey who push me to keep practicing. Btw, If anyone wants to hear an awesome Lorber song, look up "Step On It" on his album "Philly Style".
Honestly, I believe Stevie Wonder was the first to incorporate 30 sec note Bass riff notes using synthesizers including using drum machines for his music. Dennis Davis (RIP) was his drummer and a friend of mine, and shared with me how Stevie would come up with these interesting drum patterns using the drum machine that he had to learn to his frustration.
Oh my, that's the uber-bright 'Saving all my Love for You' sound. That's what I love about a Rhodes; you can manipulate the sound to suit your tastes...
Agreed. I'm into that darker sounding Rhodes kick as well. But back in the day I absolutely loved this tone that JL is using. Funny how with musical growth comes a taste for the warmer tones...
Have a listen to Deodata's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" to hear the Rhodes in context; then listen to "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc; try Tom Scott; try Joe Sample; try Donald Fagen .. I don't know Jeff Lorber, but I really think that to appreciate the Rhodes one has to appreciate its awesome versatility ... that' its legend, not a bunch of jazzy licks!
Remember Jeff Lorbers DX 7 period and it was really Shite compared to his Rhodes sound, love the Würlitzer too. Nice to hear he has gone back to the real thing. Now do it live too please. It seems like all the rhodes they use on records is not used live and that's a pity.
Lorber uses the Yamaha S90ES for his live performances which does well and he has a fantastic Rhodes patch. His album Hacienda in 2013 is the last REAL RHODES album he has and he sparingly puts the real Rhodes in his albums today. I can tell if he is using the Yamaha or Rhodes, just gotta have an ear for it…nevertheless…the dude is a genius.
Man I love Jeff Lorber. One of the greatest musicians ever.
He has the most amazing Rhodes sound period!
' Tines ' is now a setting or preset emulation on many workstations and portable keyboards. Other non trademarked names might be EP1, 70s EP or Dyno
Real treat Jeff! Great introspection from truly One of Greatest Funk Maestros to have walked the Planet
Amazing they did not include Richard Tee!
Tune 88! First Jazz-Funk tune I learned!
"Tune 88" is fantastic theme, very nice jazz standard especially for Rhodes piano .
Indeed!

I always turn the tone knob (EQ) down to get the highs out of it. I agree.
What a bad ass!!!! This man rules!!!
woow he said like gamelan..... gamelan is traditional musical instrument from indonesia... my country.... thank's jeff....
he has great feel
Sounds like he has either the dyno mod or the George duke hard neoprene tips done.

+catboyzee But you can't get that early 70's tone with a later model no matter how it's adjusted.
Different hammers and tines, right?
Ooohhhh THAT'S the Rhodes sound I LOVE...and Jeff Lorber? Geesh, one of my top three influences as a relative "wanna-be" jazz keyboardist.
Wtf, why’d it fade out in the end? He was getting down, I was loving it!
great!
His music is perfect for Rhodes
Clanky later model without the warmth of the early mk1. Would love to hear him on a mk1a.
Funk Maestro... ...
Doctor Garbonzo
what is the tune he plays at the end?!?!?!
Tune 88... Water Sign...1978
1979, but otherwise right on.

The Rhodes was made specially for JL :-) JL rocks

Plastic key mk2 with too much highs for my taste. To much clank but what a great player.
