Man they made wonderful music together. Two musical soul mates. Their early work together is still so fresh today. Bless you Al & Tom.

I used do do all of Tom's Rhodes work back in those days and we would go see the two of them play at an old long gone Restaurant/ Bar called the Scotch and Sirloin.
To see the two of them together was magic then and is still magic now
    Thanks for the memory

You had that Rhodes sounding amazing. Was it the much revered model E? Next to the Deagan Vibraphone, I think Rhodes is the most beautifully organic sound in music

To Al explain so eloquently why the Fender Rhodes was such an excellent musical platform for his singing is simply a music/history lesson of the highest order. Rest in power...

The summer of 1977 and I am enlisted in the US Coast Guard. I am stationed on a CG cutter, home-ported in Galveston, Tx, but the ship is in dry docks for repair all summer long in NOLA. The summer of 1977. The Al Jarreau album is being played quite a bit by the local jazz station. The song that really caught my ear was We Got By. All the other songs are good as well. But...We Got By. That song does something to me. It always has. It is definitely one of my favorite songs. Al's singing is extraordinary, all the musicianship on the album is on point. "Especially the keyboardist. I've been admiring the keyboardist all these 40 + years, but I never have known his name. I don'[t know that much about jazz and jazz musicians. I know a few but that's about it.
So, just now I took the time to google the album Look to the Rainbow ( they didn't have the internet 40 years ago) and I found out the keyboardist is Tom Canning. I looked for Tom Canning on you tube and it led me to this video.

Thank you so much for this. On Al's first live album, you can hear him say..."this is a song by Tom Canning." I had never heard of the guy but, I could tell when he was not on an album with Al and I missed his work greatly. Al is no longer here but, I'm glad to have finally met you Mr. Canning.
"Sweet tomorrow morning, bursting with a dawn..."

All I can say is wow!!! Al Jarreau and Tom Canning were absolute magic together. And I mean magic in its purest sense. I have to concur with you Belsha, once the two parted ways, neither of them were the same. Once Jay Gradon and Co. stepped in, things began to change. Who knows, maybe it was a clash of egos between Jay and Tom that led to the departure? Wouldn't it be great if Al and Tom had a reunion concert? That would bring the house down for sure. What ever the reason, THANK YOU BOTH for sharing your incredible gifts and talents with us. Your legacy will live on forever!

I've never understood why Al Jarreau stopped working with Tom Canning, they were the perfect pair, writing unique songs together, and creating their own sound. Canning went on to work with artists of much lower caliber and hardly doing anything as a songwriter, , and Jarreau drifted from producer to producer, unable to create albums as classic as "This Time" or "Breaking Away".

+belsha Jay Graydon was the producer behind both of those, and they very strongly carry the stamp of his sound.

+belsha I actually think the peak of their collab was a bit earlier.. glow, all fly home... there is this great piano intro of "we got by" on the "look at the rainbow" live album by tom canning that gives me goose bumps time and time again..

Certain record companies steer big selling artists to high ranking writers & producers once they become popular to try and chase those big commercial hits. Canning wasn't part of that big picture but he did perform on a lot of later songs.

For about half a season, Canning served as music director for the short-lived Thicke of the Night, but Alan Pasqua, Dennis Belfield, and Mike Baird were Rick Springfield's musicians up to that point. Wouldn't it have been funny if Springfield had made an appearance on his show, just to sing with the band?
