A tour of my sewing room!

  • My sweet hubby helped me record this rare glimpse of my tidied sewing room. It's usually a mess!
    Notes:
    @ 14:00 - The Juki stitches up 1,500 stitches per minute, not 10K.
    @ 14:30 - I said my father-in-law WAS a jeweler. I should have said HE IS a retired jeweler because he's still with us and is an amazing artist.

    I used to have a dedicated sewing space that had been a 2 car garage that my husband enclosed as another room. We had a separate stand alone garage. I loved that space but had to give it up when I had to move to take care of my father (my husband had since passed away). I love that this lady has her passions so accessible. People who do not understand the fabric addiction would call us "hoarders". But we are not, we are just crafters.

      I love this video. Thank you, Kathy Thompson-for your comment about fabric addiction. I am planning to move and one thing I wanted was a "Craft Room". I have a special needs daughter that loves crafting. So we have a lot a lot of stuff. I hate it when people say or use that word "hoarder"

    • @kathythompson5800
      @kathythompson5800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1215mdpc I hate that too! I had to give up a lot of my craft supplies when I moved, and some people would tell me that I still have too much.. but do they have something that they ¨hoard¨?

    • @cazkiwinz4300
      @cazkiwinz4300 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, to be fair, we ARE hoarders…. Some of us have stashes we will or could never use up in our lifetime and yet we do keep on buying more, just to have… and hoard… which IS the definition. I do prefer “collector” myself though. 😜
      It’s just a shame that the word has been corrupted by calling people “hoarders” who have filled their houses with rubbish, grime and filth….whether it be from laziness or mental health problems… and which looks nothing like our organised, clean stashes of fabric and notion and tool collections… they’re not even in the same realm of “hoarding” and shouldn’t be referred to as such. We do need a new word for us!

    I am currently designing my new sewing studio and I'm watching sewing room tours on TH-cam for inspiration. Your room speaks to my very soul! I have a huge collection of vintage sewing machines and notions. I was so excited to see someone else who collects old needle books, zippers, buttons, tracers, etc. I can't wait to have room to display some of my collection. I might have to video a tour of my own! Thanks for sharing.

    Your room is HEAVEN, and your vintage quilt + feed sack cabinet took my breath away!
    All I kept thinking throughout this video is “How I would love to have a crafting friend like you living close to me. We’d have a ball in each other’s sewing room!” Unfortunately, not many people seem to be into the variety of things I like to make. It’s uncanny how we seem to enjoy the same type of projects, even down to the rag-dolls, and that we both have several projects on the go at any given time - some going on for years. At the same time, you’ve given me hope in knowing that there are creatively likeminded people out there. Thank you x

    First of all, thank you for inviting us into the privacy of your home...I CRINGE every time someone making a video feels the need to say “don’t judge or don’t hate” because people feel entitled to be hateful 🙄. Kudos to your hubby for his patience, and to you for your organization. Fun fact: I just read your daughter’s comment that she lived in this room for years, that made my heart smile! Other fun fact: I’m very happy to learn that I’m not the only one who keeps “teeny tiny scraps”! Love that you have the space to keep out and see everything that makes you happy. New subscriber, looking forward to enjoying your talent and learning💗💗💗

      Thank you for the sweet comment. I wanted to share my organizing ideas, but I didn't expect such vitriol from people about what I choose to do in my own house.
      How small does a scrap have to get before you throw it out? As long as it's not unraveling into non-existence, I say it might still have some life left!

    After 40 years of using the dining room a section of the family room, which I was booted out of, and relegated to a corner of my living room, I have a sewing room. It's tiny but oh my gosh I love it. Your room is just to pretty to work in. I'd get so upset it got dirty.

    Okay... so... first of all... you’re an amazing lady! To have the courage to ask your husband to video this entire thing is something I would have never had. Then.... your husband to be such a great sport and tape it all without making any comments?!?!? LOL... not my husband... he would have commented and made jokes all the way through. Now... I have a very grave question to ask you. When in the whole world do you have the time to do all the things you do?!?! Just organizing this room must have taken forever. You are literally the Proverbs 31 woman. Seriously... do you ever sleep? Wow! Wow! Wow! So if you had to design the perfect house with the most perfect studio, would you keep it separate like you do now, or would you combine the art with the sewing in the same space? Okay... now I need to go recover from all this beauty overload.

    Oh Melanie I’m sitting here crying. I once had a sewing and craft room as organized as yours. We lost our whole home to a house fire. And while people will say to me it’s only stuff it’s the vintage things I mis. Lace. Catalogs. Buttons etc. slowly trying to replenish. Enjoy every minute you spend in there. God blessed you with many talents. Thanks for sharing. xxx

    • @MelanieSullivan
      @MelanieSullivan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm so sorry to hear that Diane. My cousin and his family lost their home to a fire a few years ago. The baby quilts I made for their daughters were lost in the fire and even that very tiny (insignificant, really) loss was sad for me and helped bring home the impact of a fire. I can't imagine the depth of such a devastating loss. Enjoy replenishing your stash though! The hunt and find are part of the fun for me. Hugs!

      Melanie Sullivan thank you Melanie. Our friend and neighbor was on American Pickers. I will email you with my email so you can send me a picture of the pattern caning you’re looking for. He’s ALWAYS out and about. You never know. Life is strange in a round about way. What do they say? “ six degrees of separation.” Sorry about the baby quilts. No one knows except us the affect loss has. Even a small one. I still can’t think about it. My husband and I have walked away with good tho. We have to. We’ve learned so much about people as well as each other. I thank God we are going through this together. Some people go through tragedy alone. By the way I love your videos and how real they are. You’re a mighty talented lady. xxxxx

    I used to have 2 of the pattern sewing cabinets from a store that went out of business,i downsized and gave them to my son for his shop.They were great and what i needed at the time.I even used to have one of the cutting tables/counter from the same fabric store,gave that to a neighbor during the downsizing.I do still sew and have a lot of fabric left and i also worked at a quilt store for over 10 years,that's how i was able to get first dibs on the cabinets and counter.Now i cross stitch more than sew,although for the past 3 weeks i've been sewing masks.By the way,i'm 82 which is why i downsized,wouldn't want my kids to have to deal with all my STUFF when i'm gone.LOL

      Davis Kathi you are so right about having things and if something happened to us someone would have to deal with all of it. Let us pray they’d have an appreciation for what we did and not see it as junk and just throw it all away. Keep up the good work and the good fight. Here’s to being creative and knowing when to downsize.

    Fabulous.. absolutely FABULOUS! I thought " I'm the only one" . The only one with a creative drive bigger and faster than the Audubon. Started as a small girl( HOLY Hobby was the only doll I ever had and I adored her. I was a music loving, tree climbing lil Baker ) I've just, after eee~hem ..a lifetime, shall we say☺ put the bulk of my creative genius into a space thats allowing me to start a fresh new portion of my journey. Genius? I believe everyone has a gift/ gifts that our Lord has blessed us with. No Matter how big or small it may be to anyone else it's our gift of love and it can be nothing less than amazing.. GENIUS!🤗
    All that said, hahaaa it may "seam" like a lot of clutter in jars on shelves e.t.c but is my world of anything's possible. One minute, one day 2 hours one night, a lil here a lil more there it is a delightful gift that will grow as im restored cut by cut, skein by skein, sketch to sketch.. there are no longer any walls on that ol' box. All that I dream I'll achieve. Gracious, that was an unplanned never thought out before mission statement.. I think it was the pure joy of seeing another embracing the ALL the itty bitty bits that make up such purpose. I'll digress and simply say thank you gooot sharing a bit of what makes your joy tick. Ive never been to your channel until this and im certainly looking forward to seeing a bit of what you've done and shared.
    Blessn's & TTNT

    You are like me with all the different crafts. I've given up cross stitch many years ago due to eyes. I started knitting a cable knit sweater in my 20's. Finished it in my 40's and now wearing in my 50's. In the 1980's it was loose and baggy, now it's a fitted sweater. All comes back. Love your room. I just tidied mine recently and ended up with 2 craft rooms as all 3 children have grown and gone. Greetings from Australia. 🌼🌷💕

    OMG...I love your sewing room! I LOVE all of your stacks of fat quarters. What I would do with using them now for face masks in these times where all sewers are sewing because of the coronavirus pandemic. I have had to go in my garage and get out fabric bins full of fabrics I have been hoarding through the years to sew masks. I am still using my SINGER Electronic sewing machine that is just as old as my daughter...almost 37 years old. Top of the line back then. Unfortunately, because it is “electronic”, I have had to service it at least 4 times throughout those years I owned it. All of a sudden, every so often since I have been sewing masks...it sews in reverse 😳😬😂. It usually belongs in this huge Singer Armoire that it came with, but took it out to one of my sewing, scrapbook room full of my craft machines and paper stacks. I still have my Ultralock Serger, bought the same time as my sewing machine...both are work horses used to make dresses and all sorts of projects throughout the years. I have had to take out my Singer Futura embroidery machine to sew masks...but I want a Juki sewing machine. Once we are not quarantined...I am purchasing one. Thank you for sharing your love of sewing and crafts! And your beautiful sewing machines. We crafters were made to “produce” beautiful things...to give and share it...just like God produced this amazing universe and beautiful earth! 🥰❤️🙌🏻🙏🏻

    First time viewer and wow - we are spirit sisters. I am in the middle of re-organizing my craft/sewing room and have been having a hard time because I do such a variety of crafts - sewing, quilting, embroidery, knitting, junk journals, beading, weaving and probably more. Also like you, I’m very visual and need to see things or I forget them. I have so many new ideas now. Thank you for sharing your great room. New subscriber, for sure.

    Does the wired bins come with the sliding shelve or did you buy that separate or in the same location? Thank you for sharing; just like me a little of everything, love it.

      Those little sliding wire bins are from The Container Store. I think they were in the kitchen section and are actually made to hold canned goods.

    Thank you for sharing your special sewing/craft room. I love that you have made it your own and it isn't the "standard" all Ikea shelving. It is very organized and I love that you like to collect the vintage sewing notions, fabrics, needlepoint kits. I too enjoy much of the small items out and visible to enjoy. It is fun to see someone who enjoys what they do. Thank you again.

You make me feel normal with so many different projects going on at one time and a huge variety of interests. Variety is the spice of life. I used to have 7 sewing machines but now I only have 4 because we moved.I have a room for sewing but I have so much stuff you can barely get in the room....I'm not sure what I am going to do I'm poor so I can't afford to buy shelfs ...I guess it will just have to sit on the floor ...I may buy tubs one each month at least I can stack it and make more room....

    I am always amazed at just how much stuff quilters tend to have. I am always looking for ways to minimize my own sewing stash and actually purged about half of my stash earlier this year. But then I watch a video like this and realize my stash is just a fraction of what others have. Personally, I don't think it's good to have so much ... there's a lot of money tied up on all of that stuff, and even if you sewed all day every day for the rest of your life, could you actually work your way through it all? And if you could, how much will be faded and dusty and rotted by the time you get to it? Just food for thought.

    It was sooooo much fun touring your room with you. Your space is amazing. Love it. So glad to see another design space that’s organized. I too like you have my room set up in stations. Really like that you have everything visible. Where did you find the hook hangers for your drafted patterns?
    I also have gridded work books that I like to plan my projects in. I work with different textiles to create my bags and use the notebooks as it makes the sizes easier.
    You have soooooo much “ stuff” in your space.......but I bet you know where everything is😊
    New subscriber here and looking forward to watching more of your past and future posts!

    I really enjoyed your tour! We have so many things in common! I have some of the same books as I too love books. I also macrame, knit, crochet,embroidery, do English smocking , tatting, jewelry. I bought my first car, 1971 cutlass supreme, from jewelry sales when I was 17 yrs. I have a love for feedsacks and vintage fabrics and quilt parts. When a singer fabric store went out of business in the 70's my mom bought 4 Simplicity pattern cabinets, cutting table and 2 thread/trims displays. I also dabble in colored pencils & watercolor. My mom passed away in 2012 and I'm still cleaning out the hoard. I inherited about 15 large bins of double knit polyester fabric I plan to make a rug for my sewing room (20' x 36') . The room isn't finished yet. Thank you for showing how you organize your stuff.

    Oh my, Melanie! You remind me of ME! So much stuff to work on, and we know we won't get to it all in this life time! I thought I had too much sewing stuff, but watching your video, I think we are about the same. You gave me many ideas I would have never thought of, so 'thank you'. I am moving from a three bedroom home, with one of the bedrooms being my in-house sewing room, and also having a sewing shed, 13x20', to a two bedroom home with no full sewing room in-house and no sewing shed. My husband is so understanding, just like your husband, and says he doesn't mind me using our living and dining room for me to set up my sewing. He has another room that joins the living room for his own t.v. room. Our home is for what we want to use it for, and we don't socialize much. I also have so much dance costuming, so between that and fabric, notions, etc., it will be a little tight. But none the less, we love what we do, and we will find ways to make it work.
    Its all about how one organizes, whether one has lots or little. Thank you so much for your video, and HAPPY SEWING!!!

    Too funny that I found your channel looking for ways to organize my projects & I think I’m going to use the large sterlite bins so I can see what’s in them, but now have to figure out how to stack them in my space, so thanks for the idea.
    And now I find myself wanting to give you ideas if you don’t mind (?)
    Maybe your hubby can attach your heavy ironing board to the end of your center table & make it collapsible so you can pull it up when it’s needed. And I just love your Hello Kitty sewing machine, so maybe make a clear plastic cover like the one you have (to protect from dust) then display it in your room so you can enjoy it. And maybe you could add piping in the seams made out of a mix of your quilting scraps ....how cute would that be!
    Sorry I stuck my nose in, but I can really tell how much you love your older “things” .
