This song really drives home how far the Kongs are from their home, they are in a completely foreign part of the island and there is no turning back now, the have ventured past what any Kong has gone before than this shift in tone in music and increase in difficulty emphasize that.

"The Arctic is exactly what you'd guess from the name, an icy tundra with a few watery segments. The music reminded me a bit of "Northern Hemispheres" from Donkey Kong Country, in 8 bit form. A very dangerous sounding song, it made me think about being trapped in a tundra and freezing to death."
The level was so hard and the cool music made it that much better and helped push me through to the end. The atmosphere this level and this song created at the time was on a whole different level for the time.
This song has a funny story in my life. When I was younger and one of my friends had just gotten his car, we would just drive and explore outside the city. One time we decided to go as far as we could in one night and we had a playlist of different video game music playing. At some point past midnight we left all signs of urban and suburban setting and this song started playing. It was just a long straight road, not even any curves, with no other car except ours and some light posts. As the song got creepier and unsettling, even the light posts were disappearing and it was just us on a long, straight, empty, dark road. All three of us couldn't help and laugh at the coincidence but also got freaked out for a few minutes there. 10 years later we still talk about that moment every once in a while.
Eveline Fischer actually composed this one! I was kind of surprised, since her songs are usually more upbeat and less foreboding. It's a great piece, and, imo, it sets the mood of the blizzard level just as effectively as Aquatic Ambiance does for its respective levels. Considering how I, too, originally thought this was composed by David Wise as well, I'd say that she did a good job of matching Wise's style of making the sound tracks really accentuate the ambiance and mood of a level.
and it came Right after a Boss fight if you game over you have to face the boss and the stage before it AGAIN considering the crazy gap between Candy Saves
I'm working on a game right now where the final world is dual themed around ice and horror, and looking back, I think this track and its accompanying stage are what singlehandedly implanted that idea in my head. It's so unusual for a platformer to tackle the dark, ominous, downright oppressive side of a cold snowy environment, which is a shame because when done right I think it easily surpasses the more cliche choices of volcanic or industrial worlds. There's an unmatched sense of isolation and lifelessness to these sorts of grey deep winter environments that makes them feel incredibly threatening even when there's nothing at all creepy going on in them.
It's cool to see this comment and dig into your channel and see the game you were making at the time, released in all its glory. When the puzzle pieces connect! I myself was thinking about making a platforming game, I've been for months now, but I want to practice coding on Scratch more. I've written down all my ideas even, so many ideas... I just need to learn to get into it.
My state has had a lot more snow than usual this year, had a foot last week and getting a nice flurry today. I've been playing this song in the car while the snow comes down, it's such a great feeling. And I've been practicing Snow Barrel Blast on my SNES at home with the curtains open, watching the snow fall down as I play. it's such a good feeling
I'm glad I was able to watch the streams for this track to be restored. I really enjoy it. As I've mentioned, your restorations are always accurate to the source material compared to MIDI covers of the same songs I heard.
What I love about this OST is how it gradually picks up more and more until about a minute in when the main bit finally starts. Also, in DKCR, this was repurposed as music for the cliffs.
Probably my favorite detail about this game is how it starts to snow on the first level, then they enter an ice cave on the second, going for the exit on the other side entering the third where it's still snowing but slowly stops...
The first world has something similar where as you progress towards the end of the first level, the sun slowly sets. And the next level start dark and rainy, and then clears out at the end. I think another level later in the forest also has some change in the time of the day.

Slipslide Ride: the crystalline cave is a dangerous diversion, but you get through it to emerge in Ice Age Alley: where the storm finally subsides, leaving you in the stark beauty of frigid azure skies and snow-stifled pines. Northern Hemispheres is crafted perfectly with the mood of the first section of Gorilla Glacier.

Evangeline Fischer is a master of composing atmospheric backing tracks. I always felt that DKC 3's soundtrack (which she was the primary composer for) was the weakest of the series due to a lack of hard-hitting melodic tunes, but she knows how to compose a song that conveys a strong mood.
This could easily enter your list of your best works so far, it sounds extremely identical to the original, but in glorious high quality! (though i know im not a musician myself...). Hopefully your next dkc3 restoration could be either crazy calypso (the save file screen music) or intro + dixie beat (the rare logo intro plus the main title screen). Not sure which one you said would be possible to make and which one was missing some instruments ;o;
