Her first single was "Piss Factory," which is really a poetry reading with rock accompaniment, similar to this - few if any had done that before. It's great!

the best song illustration of what a primal scream is all about!

This song is a ride and you just have to go with it. It can have a different meaning for each person that hears it. "White lids, white opals seeing everything just a little bit too clearly." Amazing stuff. The reference to sand makes me think of "Dune" or maybe an atomic test site.

Great anthem one of the greatest albums of the 70’s
I saw her tour this album at the Avery Fisher hall in NYC

Poetry in a lyrical fever dream? Patti was inspired by the same work(Peter Reich's "Book of Dreams.) as Kate Bush (Cloudbusting"). Always thought of this tune as being performed in a smokey, little basement N.Y.C. club!(the best kind!). Particularly if your like me your raised on a rocky New England farm, a hot spot such as C.B.G.B.'s (birthplace of N.Y. punk!) is and was a magnet. Peace, Love and Patti.🐎🐎🐎-

Patti Smith is a "love it or hate it" kind of artist. I am very much on the love it side, especially this album. This is the kind of thing she does like nobody else. The spoken word poetry slam is Patti at her finest.

I don’t really love much by her but I don’t really hate anything by her, either. She had some important songs from this album that I enjoy, and some great live performances. The rest I could take or leave.

Incidentally - chronologically the first of two songs by absolutely brilliant and unique female artists about Wilhelm Reich and his son: the other is Cloudbusting by Kate Bush.

Birdland was a Jazz club in Manhattan owned by organized crime figures.

There are many, many things to say about Birdland; like all the legendary artists who performed there, before the topic of its-allegedly-questionable ownership is mentioned.

You just get swept away by this track and its swirling poetry. Some of the same themes come back in the long track "Land".

Patti Smith? Meh, she's fine. I won't turn off her music necessarily, but I much prefer the artists who inspired her.
Her only really good song, in my opinion, is "Because the Night". But of course, Springsteen wrote that. And his version is better as well...

Patti Smith falls into my "hoax" category: I refuse to believe that anyone actually listens to this artist [see also: Tom Waits].
