Damn that was a surprisingly convincing Kevin Shields wall of sound. As much as I always enjoyed your old no talk all synth format, this is a welcome change, and some killer synth content.
Thank you very much for these (recttes) of kitchens all the adjustments that you make send me back to the 1980s a music that I listened to I was 10/11 years old personally I called it music apocaliptic post with completely shifted (string) but which I created a real sound atmosphere that brings me back to movies from the 1980s (like) zombies at the supermarket or New York 1997. thanks again for this PEACE AND MUSIC sharing .
Save me a couple of em? It’s tricky finding juicy good ones! I tried the fancy moog one, but it was kind of a bore. I seem to like the extra older boss, aaaandnot sure what else (I’ve researched phasers extensively!). Lil bit of drive before it is also nice.
Dr. Scientist BitQuest is my go-to for everything. Lots of different effects with wildly different characters packed into a little box. And the fuzz switch turns it into a beast!
Cheers, great video! Love those post-punk vibes! I run my Prophet-10 through a Source Audio Collider. Awesome sounding full stereo delay+reverb pedal. Will try the hologram microcosm next.
Pascal can talk to me about synths all night, god damn. Thirst aside, everything sounded fucking fantastic; I need to get more creative with pedals on my jupiter
Thank you for demonstrating the additive effect of each pedal on the sound. Synth > _______ > _______. One of the best, clearest videos on sound design and effects I’ve encountered.
keeping the vibe alive.. its insane to think about how you can just reimagine these sounds with some pedals and a keyboard. Makes me wonder why Kevin Shields was so off the radar when he had this sound dialed in so long ago but chose not make many more records than they (MBV) did. These sounds are timeless and sound so modern in 2021. Still loving it after all these years...
rooms and plumes rule for a brassy analog polysynth. i've used both on my rev2 and they sound great. the rooms gain knob, bp filter, bitcrush, chorus, ring mod, delay, and separate fx wet knob help as well
My first reaction was to run to bandcamp, listened to 3 tracks before being convinced to buy the cassette! (listening to the rest now that the video is over). In terms of pedals I have the Super Ego + and Specular Tempus. The Super Ego is a multi fx so it gives me some variety in how I set the 2 up but only when my bassist doesn't steal the super ego lol
The reason why the volume levels can’t match is because the synth is sending a line level. The pedals are wanting a instrument level input. A reamp box might solve this problem.
Does anyone have recommendations for an overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal for making shoegaze noise on synths? The Old Blood Alpha Haunt does sound pretty good here, but there are almost no other videos of people doing this kind of thing, and many distortion pedals which sound great on guitar don't work very well with synths.
How are you running the master soo hot into the CE-2W? Are you plugged directly into it? The older boss choruses couldnt take a lone signal that hot without distortion all over the place.
I try pretty much everything with the synths and drum machine. Some sound pretty good and some sound kinda gross… I think it could be an impedance issue or if anyone has ideas/ solutions regarding things like a reverb that causes clipping sounds whilst recording…?
You could try a reamping box like this one www.perfectcircuit.com/art-dual-rdb.html they will attenuate the volume and adjust the impedance to work better with a pedal.
Ok, this is a video a reaaaaally liked, great music, great explanations. Not at all like those other videos you have been doing with the guys that just make lame jokes and noise.
Yes yes these synth sounds are amazing (a prophet going though a nice chorus will never ever sound bad) but also these glorious enby vibes are life sustaining. It's really nice to see Perfect Circuit giving a platform to musicians outside the binary given how typically dominated these spaces are by people whose primary difference is white dude with, or without, beard.
True, lots of rack units were used for classic shoegaze sounds, but there are also lots of modern pedals that have put some of those rack sounds into the pedal format which can be pretty convenient since they are much easier to carry around than a 19" rack.
There's a lot of crossover and are often used interchangeably, but they can be considered separate genres. Shoegaze is generally more abrasive and distorted (e.g. My Bloody Valentine), dream pop more ethereal and sparkly (Cocteau Twins) or hazy (Slowdive). He plays both in this video. It doesn't really matter whether that sound is achieved with synth or guitar.
Retrowave is a different genre than Shoegaze. Shoegaze is more guitar based than Retrowave aka Synthwave, but can also be synth based. When it is synth based it still sounds like Shoegaze because of the use of effects, notes played, and timber all create the fuzzy/dreamy/drone/wall-of-sound vibe. Synthwave has a much more polished sound with clarity in the production with driving, danceable beats. Big difference. Also, Shoegaze became a genre before Retrowave.
Everything about this video is gorgeous and inspiring.
that sound at 2:20 is godly
Damn that was a surprisingly convincing Kevin Shields wall of sound. As much as I always enjoyed your old no talk all synth format, this is a welcome change, and some killer synth content.
great sounds and great shirt
More demos from this beautiful human!!
Thank you! The flanger still gets me...
Hell yeah, exactly the type of sounds I've been into lately. Thank you for shining a spotlight on this synth wizard!
The keyboardist is beautiful, the keyboard is beautiful, the sounds are beautiful. TH-cam needs more of this.
Hell yeah ❤️
I'm straight as hell, and I agree fully.
@@stefanhansen5882 you mean you don't find synths sexually attractive?
@@KorhanErel :)
@@stefanhansen5882 straight as hell? I thought all the sinners who aren’t straight are in hell hehee I guess hell is pretty gaye
Love this!! ❤️ hearing the dry signal and adding everything in was wonderful.
Great sounds and we'll explained, especially showing the dry signal and then adding each effect.
Really very interesting. Sounds great.
super rad!
This is by far the best “using guitar pedals for synth” vid I’ve seen yet!
Prophet 6 sounds epic with the pedals
Really nice. Would love to see more synth shoegaze videos.
That last sound was awesome. Great video!
That freaky outro jam is lovely oh my god
I'm totally checking out your bands! Great stuff!
Hologram Microcosm is my favorite pedal to use with synths.
Lovely video! Super fun to watch with lots of different price points on the pedals. ❤️
Quality content as always!
LEGEND love you Scalabrine
Awesome ideas! Love the drive > delay > flanger combo and turning the knobs to add some musicality
Outstanding video! I use my Strymon Deco in nearly every synth pedal chain - super versatile.
do you use it more for the saturation or delay or both?
Wow such beautiful sounds. More drifting than a Fast&Furious movie
Thank you.
Bout to go play with some pedals now.
Wow, really great sounds!!! Def. have me sold on saving for a Prophet-6. I currently have a Sequential Pro-3, and use a Keeley Caverns pedal with it.
Y'all have been on point with content lately. Now send me a synth 😹
First patch = love
Putting my pretty tame Microbrute through a Small Stone phaser was a revelation. Now I'm collecting phasers.
Save me a couple of em? It’s tricky finding juicy good ones! I tried the fancy moog one, but it was kind of a bore. I seem to like the extra older boss, aaaandnot sure what else (I’ve researched phasers extensively!). Lil bit of drive before it is also nice.
The small stone rocks
The Brute really shines with a delay as well.
Microbrute is dope, I got my eye on the Microfreak though, as soon as they hit the used market so my cheap ass can justify it.
Cool techniques perfectly presented! 🔥
This video is amazing. They’re an inspiration
Great sounds. Love it.
This is very cool. Just what I've been looking for.
Dr. Scientist BitQuest is my go-to for everything. Lots of different effects with wildly different characters packed into a little box. And the fuzz switch turns it into a beast!
The Bitquest is great, having multiple effects in one pedal is always useful!
This is amazing thank you for making this
Cheers, great video! Love those post-punk vibes! I run my Prophet-10 through a Source Audio Collider. Awesome sounding full stereo delay+reverb pedal. Will try the hologram microcosm next.
The Collider sounds great!
Use my Collider too. It's incredible!
I love my RE-20 for synths. Nice bit of preamp drive, weird reverb and tasty tape delay all in one unit
i wanted a MIDI keyboard before but now i have to get one
Not really into shoegaze, but Pascal is f'ing rocking it.
I need to download this video gem in case it ever gets taken down. God forbid!
Magnifique!
Pascal can talk to me about synths all night, god damn. Thirst aside, everything sounded fucking fantastic; I need to get more creative with pedals on my jupiter

Siccck video my dude
Nice to see a shoegaze synth vid... and a Kate Bush Tee to boot!
Love it, thanks!

Super Ego + with a synth sounds like a great combo!
Great sounds 👍
Great video with lots of inspirational tips. Love the tshirt as well, Kate Bush is under-appreciated by today’s youth, generally.
This comment hasn’t aged well
Whatever else I may think about this video, I’m definitely now thinking the Mass Effect 1 soundtrack was done primarily on a Prophet 6 🤷🏼♂️🤓😄
The reason why the volume levels can’t match is because the synth is sending a line level. The pedals are wanting a instrument level input. A reamp box might solve this problem.
great suggestion, a reamp box can be handy for a synth to pedal setup, a lot of newer pedals do handle line level without a reamp box or attenuation
Is it only mono out from the Prophet-6 into the Boss pedal ?
Wow!
How do you do that chorus pedal in stereo. Also you're pretty awesome at this
Nice!
Meris Polymoon is easily my favorite pedal to use on a synth.
Great suggestion!
Same. The fact that it’s made with line level inputs in mind is fantastic
@@RileyGein hmmm this is perhaps why my chase bliss’ dark world gets clipping sounds, I take it 😥
Hey...wow!
I don’t think he gave the prophet 6 enough credit. That thing sounds massive.
I was hoping to hear some Slowdive but I’ll settle for MBV and Cocteau Twins
H9 Max since Eventide did that deadline thing last year.
No but really there are so many good effects in that thing.
Pascal is such a cool dude. Good communicator. Thanks for the demo.
Great sounds! What were the drum machines you used? They were off camera the whole time. They sounded great too!!!
The drums are all coming from an Elektron Octatrack
@@PerfectCircuit Very nice! I really love those drums and I was already thinking about getting an Octatrack. Are those sounds included stock?
@@brymilan yeah , would like to know too !!!
Yeah , interested in that too , are they included stock sounds ? Sounds soooo good 🖤👍
Alexander Sky Fi is a perfect shoegaze reverb 😎
How are you running the master soo hot into the CE-2W? Are you plugged directly into it? The older boss choruses couldnt take a lone signal that hot without distortion all over the place.
The synth is going through a volume pedal on before going to the other pedals to attenuate the signal down.
I try pretty much everything with the synths and drum machine. Some sound pretty good and some sound kinda gross… I think it could be an impedance issue or if anyone has ideas/ solutions regarding things like a reverb that causes clipping sounds whilst recording…?

God I live for that sound at 2:19
Definitely taking notes to apply this to my Zoom MS 100 for the patches. If it sounds like shit...even better. This is God Tier content.
Any uh more affordable synths that can make these sounds ?
This Mortal Coil vibes
Shoegaze synth=YES!!!!
I like how his nails almost match the chorus... wonder if that was planned
Hx stomp… the only one I own #dawless #Line_6

What is that first song pls I need it on Spotify 😫
Check out heaven or Las Vegas by the Cocteau twins
I loved shoegaze until I made some. All the things I loved about it are so much easier than other kinds of music.
What are the drums?
The drums are samples playing from an Octatrack that is off camera.
Yes yes these synth sounds are amazing (a prophet going though a nice chorus will never ever sound bad) but also these glorious enby vibes are life sustaining.
It's really nice to see Perfect Circuit giving a platform to musicians outside the binary given how typically dominated these spaces are by people whose primary difference is white dude with, or without, beard.
where do fashion and behavior end and identity begin?
I dont know how to make music but i want the synth
Fuckin dope!
shoegaze wuz more about the rack fx than pedals !dont give away all the secrets
True, lots of rack units were used for classic shoegaze sounds, but there are also lots of modern pedals that have put some of those rack sounds into the pedal format which can be pretty convenient since they are much easier to carry around than a 19" rack.
Rack effects units are often quite cheap!
i need a link to that killer Kate Bush shirt
Big Yeehaw.
There is no such thing as shoegaze synth its called Dream pop Shoegaze pop came after
There's a lot of crossover and are often used interchangeably, but they can be considered separate genres.
