    That was a lovely review. You're a very straight forward 'old style' reviewer....and all the better for that! Straight to the point and no messing around. I was wavering on buying this Tecsun 'animal' of a radio for some time now....but thanks to your 'review' I think that I will buy one. *Thanks so much - Radio Workshop!*

      Yes! It's an actual demo! Not just some guy spouting specs and reading a script based on the manual!. I want to see the (radio,camera,software....) in use, not just pictures and numbers! 👍😊👍

      @@jamesslick4790 Yes....I totally agree with you James. With a lot of 'reviewers' here on you tube....it's all about *them* as presenters and how their clothes look and how well their hair is 'coiffed' etc.....rather than what they are purportedly reviewing. This chap Ray is 'old school' and all the better for that. We need more of this on youtube.

    I grew up in a rural town in Kentucky with about 2000 people in the 80s/90s. We use to listen to aircraft radio while playing on the simulator computer games. We didn't have internet or cable. I think we had like five tv stations to watch. It was a fun time.

      Do you just run the long wire into the 'High impedance" socket? I am looking at getting one. Was wandering if I needed an unun or anything. Do you use the ground socket with a long wire?

    I can see a "use" case myself for the line out to an external "Hi-Fi" amp. I mainly listen to radio for...radio (news, talk, sports, public affairs and cultural content from here in the States or overseas). not so much for music anymore, but since this has STEREO on the FM broadcast band, it's still useful for music stations. In the classic radio era (pre TV) a console radio WAS the "Hi-Fi" and almost always included Shortwave. Somewhere, someone decided that only broadcast AM (MW) and broadcast FM were "needed" on the living room Hi-Fi tuner and MW is an afterthought on most! But, as an antique radio collector, I have to say that listening to an MW or even (AM voice) shortwave broadcast station on my 1939 Zenith is more pleasant than on most modern "communications" sets that are designed for CW or narrow bandwidth voice comms. I'd replace the AM/FM tuner on my stereo with this radio! (checking my Pay Pal balance.....) 😊

    You can buy AA to D cell adapters (some are even 3 AA in parallel to D (don't buy the ones in series unless you want triple voltage and sellers are sometimes not clear or mixed up the products) and then you can use AA NiMH cells in them. I scored one of these brand new for free, courier delivered unexpectedly to my door, not sure what the story was but I certainly can't complain about it at that price point, maybe it was some sort of promotion. The model I received has a 240 AC lead as well as the battery & DC power sources, it does have some AC hum so the filtering isn't that crash hot so I will have to source a DC supply for it. It does work reasonably well on the Air Band. I agree it is a bit old fashioned using D Cells in this day and age, they also add a significant weight to a very portable unit. I tend to mainly use my Ham Radio's mostly but I will hang on to the Tecsun for it's versatility as a back up receiver.

    Greetings Ray, great to see you're well and keep 'ticking', despite all the scaremongering we are under, all over the world.
    I also have the S-2000 receiver in my collection and I have been more than happy with it for shortwave radio listening and casual Ham reception.
    I find the BFO a bit 'touchy', just too coarse and oversensitive for easy SSB tuning so, like you, I use a proper ham transceiver for that purpose.
    The tone controls are useful for listening to voice or music, as well as the two settings in selectivity (wide - narrow), which help reduce noise and interference from adjacent signals.
    This radio by the way, costs $ 475 Aus. in Australia, which translates to aprox. 250 GBP.
    I use it mostly to monitor the aircraft Emergency channel here in Sydney, which almost always is quiet ..(and i hope it stays that way..)
    I use a little copper vertical dipole tuned in the middle of the VHF air- band, around 126 Mhz.
    Always great to see a new video from you Ray and, when these restrictions lift and we are allowed to travel freely, I might find myself in the UK for a quick visit, which will include a short trip to your QTH to share an ale or two with you!

    • @g4nsj
      @g4nsj  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd love to share an ale or two with you! Excellent idea! OK on the radio. Yes, the BFO is rather touchy. I also think a the tuning could have an even finer setting. Anyway, it's all good fun. Cheers, for now, Ray.

    Hello Ray, I have had one of these radios for about 3 years and dear they might be but just a good functional radio. I use the line in for my i pod recordings with an earphone under my pillow, things like Letter from America and soothing musing etc, helps me sleep. I am using an SDR radio at the moment but have received many stations on shortwave when I had my random wire antenna up. I received a QSL card from the Marianas islands two years ago. Always listening to Habana Radio as well as many African stations. Another thing I found that is not in the instruction book is that I plug my discone antenna into the 50 ohm sockets and cane hear Gatwick from where I live in Lydd Romney Marsh, I also enjoy listening to the coastguard helicopter. Thanks for video.

    You can find them a little bit cheaper although not that much. Regarding the interference: Do you have them with other radios as well? It might have to do with the mini whip antenna. @@g4nsj Hmm, yeah. I have just heard from the WebSDR Twente that they had problems because the neighbouring building, etc. has caused interference. And they also use the Mini Whip. I have now tried a magnetic loop antenna. Works relatively good for higher Medium Wave and Short Wave range but the Long Wave and almost complete Medium Wave range is quite poor. But the amount of interference and static is very low with that setup.

    It is a pity that the Tecsun S2000 is the only receiver in this price class with so many features, a good sound and a very reasonable price. It is reminiscent of the good old Grundig Satellit. There is probably no more market for this kind of product. SDR and the internet have killed the SWL market.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For casually absorbing content, the Internet is, yes easier. But some of us like the "sport" of catching a radio signal for real, And SDRs are a new way to do that, BUT, The first case needs an internet connection (not always available, especially in an emergency) and the second case, SDR is not as convenient as just taking along a traditional radio (his vacation use case is an example.). I use an SDR, a pocket "DC-to Daylight" iCom, along with traditional UHF-FM scanners and traditional MW/SW/VHF-FM radios, ALL have their use! I also use the internet for listening to out of town radio broadcast stations and even (Brodcastify) for out of town scanners.
