  • hello!
in this video i analyze the lyrics to lana del rey's song 'mariner's apartment complex' from her album 'norman f-ing rockwell'. i do this through the lens of diction (word choice) and connotation (the ~vibes~ or emotions that words elicit)
i believe this song illustrates the power that exists in not letting others mislabel you. lana truly takes her power back and lets her true character be known...in the context of her relationship.
i find that sentiment really powerful. i'd say that there's always power in knowing who you are, at your core, and not allowing anyone else to mislabel you. there's value in being firm in your truth~

When in the lyric Lana said she isnt a candle in the wind, and then said it in front of a apartaments complex mariners, and mariners reminde me the sea, and the bay, so i imagine a candle in front of the sea taking the wind that come from the sea , but she keeps burning cause she is the bolt, the ligthing, the thunder, in other words she is energy and fire besides just sadness.

My favorite song on NFR and one of Lana's best in her discography! I think the lyrics are, "I'm the bolt, the lightning, the thunder." Lana's next album, Blue Banisters, will be released Oct 8th, hope you will analyze some of those songs! New subscriber 💛

I've always loved this song because of what you just explained. I think Lana uses literary images for her writing and she's using Jesus several times therefore I've always thought that the line: "You're lost at sea, then I'll command your boat to me again" meant that she has the power to command the sea, just as Jesus commands the sea in the gospels to be still, like she has the ability to make her boyfriend gravitate towards her if she wants to, if he needs to, at the end of that gospel episode Jesus says: Why are you afraid? Like if he's in control, and the apostles trusted him, they shouldn't be frightened, so Lana says: I'm your man, don't be scared, I'm here, I'm in control. But that's just my interpretation! Thanks for the amazing video!

I’m from Brazil and I was like: “what lana are trying to say to me in this song?”. But your video enlightened my thoughts! Thanks for the interpretation: that was an amazing English class to me! ❤️

I imagine a siren using their voice to seduce a boat to them. They can just speak their truth and it’ll have impact. She has so much to say and she knows this. All the man has to do is listen. That’s what I get from this song.

Also, the song make me remind about the scene about Jesus and Peter in the sea. When Peter go out the boat and start go under the water, so Jesus rescue him. Like Lana was a Jesus and her boyfriend was Peter. And then she rescue him, and said: I am your man, I am your Jesus, I will help you to understand about reality, dont messed up, dont be afraid, i am your man, I am your Rock. Like this type of thing... 🙂
