Oh… My… Goodness… this makes me so excited to start working harder in my yard. Like you, all of my raised beds are wood, but so old that they are rotting out. However, I had lined all of them with tile discarded from the tile store. (I considered hardware cloth, but when I came up with a tile idea, I figure I’d give it a try.) Anyways, I have been procrastinating hard on this project for years now as I realized it’s not as simple as my wife seems to think. (Mostly because of all the tile work I have to redo in any new raise beds.)

New to your channel. Love your hillside garden ideas, have a very similarly elevated garden area, oh and the same hungry garden neighbors. I use solidi sheets of cut hardware cloth wide enough to sit the bed on. 3 ft metal garden stakes to hold up either bird netting or chicken wire and also try a bit of hugalkulture in bottom of beds if deep enough. Keep up the great ideas!

I had voles and moles invade, I’m now in the process of emptying each bed and lining with hardware cloth and refilling them. With all the exercise I don’t have to go to the gym 😜

I live in the Rocky Mt region and I found your video quite beneficial cause with the wind & sometimes of our winters, it can drop down into the -30's to -50's, thank goodness it doesn't last for weeks and usually ranges 0/-10 to -15/-20 most of the time for the coldest part. (I ramble sometimes) Any way you have some really good ideas I could use for the green house, even it it would be on a smaller scale and definitely the raised planter beds.

Hi Eric! (Welcome btw) You can never have too many! pallets So chipmunks tend to go under. The beds are 17” high with nothing really nearby for them to jump over from. The poultry wire is mainly to stop the squirrels, deer, possums, raccoons…etc. I have a section of poultry wire in the front hanging from the top, sort of like a curtain. I flip it up if I need to reach in.
They hill your garden is on... I assume you cut down trees to make space? Do you have to worry about hill side soil erosion when the hill loses it's trees and associated root structures holding the soil there?
I'm one of the 25 who made it to the end. Have you tried any of the other brands of metal beds? vego garden/birdies/etc? Also, random question... Are those boots wide toe box/barefoot style? If so, what brand?
Are we procrastinating or are we just aware of how time consuming all the millions of projects we have are? Maybe we are just being practical trying to match projects to the amount of time that we have available.

Was wondering, as a side note about the raised beds, if you could mix 10% concrete into the soil with a spade, and use that as the bottom of the raised beds. @@WineberryHill Very good point. I find in my yard that stuff grows up from below into my compost bins, which is a minor nuisance. (Amazing how those roots find those few tiny holes.) But then, our friends, the worms, also crawl up from below. When I saw the British guy's idea, I was searching for info on building a retaining wall, and then thought it might also solve the rodents nesting under the shed problem. Everything is a trade off. The hardware cloth also insures you don't drown your plants after a torrential downpour.

I have been slowly removing trees over a 15 year period. Not all at once. I make sure to stabilize each area, structurally, and with plants.

Makes sense. I like hardware cloth because it allows the plant to reach beyond the bottom of the bed...but that would probably work!
