Last week we took a behind the scenes look at the work we’ve been doing for Ben Frost (Ethermachines). Ben’s soundtracks for Dark on Netflix are rightly highly regarded and we were involved in production for season two and credited on the physical releases (Vinyl on Invada Records) and also on the show’s end credits. We’re back at work again treating newly recorded brass and woodwind parts for season three: Jo presents Behind The Gear with Soundgas engineer Ben Hirst and Head Gear Head Tony working on additional material for Dark Cycle 3.
Equipment highlighted includes our modified Dynacord Echocord Studio, Cyclosonic FS-1D 3D Panner, the Soundgas Type 636, Les Publisons (Infernal Machine and DHM-89), Lexicon Model 200, Ursa Majors (Space Station and Stargate 323) as well as the Denon DM-2000 ½” Tape Echo.
This was taken from the footage filmed on an iPhone live on Instagram, so the video compression/quality leaves something to be desired, but we hope you enjoy the content.

Fantastic work guys. The sounds of droning doom every time Noah’s name was uttered in the first season was what reallllyyyy got me hooked.
Literally, this is what I want to do for a living! If you're ever hiring, I'll be glad to experiment with you! I love making dark SFX with my Moog Modular!
Remember, at some point they said that also, as did we.. Build a portfolio - for god sake don't post it all on bandcamp etc., keep some back for your real portfolio.. Network, network and network..
Des machines de rêve... This écho on plate surface is increible. Make me think a little of rolands tape echo’s when selecting echo mode (1 to 6) but in roland’s we cannot see mechanically the heads moving like with this one..
Now this 3D panner must be incredible to hear for real. As the ADR panscan i saw in another vidéo. I just don’t get how you guys could increase the « dirtyness » of the sound.
I am also very curious on how did you get all this knowlege about sound and old machines ? Be sure that if one day you proposes masterclasses I’ll be in !

This should have been filmed in 4k with a Canon C500 and a professional mic, not a freaking iPhone in portrait mode.. and CROPPED!! What an absolute waste.
