The Overland Track | Winter

Hiking the Overland Track in winter offers the opportunity to escape the crowds and booking issues, but it does have it's trade offs. With conditions often being less than ideal, transfers harder to organise, pack weights increase, the cold can be hard to escape and you need to be confident and prepared to deal with adverse conditions. Sometimes you get lucky (depending on the experience you are after), with a relatively mild weather window and the views if/when the weather clears are breathtaking.

Must be one of the great iconic Aussie treks. Thanks for showing us. You coped with the inclement weather with your usual grace and good humour. Absolutely loved the peaks (Basalt?) and the views you got. Well worth the effort. Can definitely feel the tension between wanting to be away from the crowds and the huts despite them being a respite from the conditions. It’s the same for the Great Walks in NZ. Great facilities but must be shared. Glad you got at least one night in your beloved tent. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing the huts if only to get an idea of what they are like.

I would say Basalt, but I've not looked that up. I did intend to film some of the huts as most of them are quite nice, but I'm very mindful of the impact my behaviour has on other people's experience and as there were always people in the huts I just decided not to film. I know huts play a big part in the hiking culture of NZ and they definitely have their place, but takes a bit for me to come to terms with as it's not the nature experience I often go for.

Absolutely stunning. So much ‘wow’ indeed. Definitely put that one onto the bucket list. The views from the high peaks were epic. You must have felt like the only person/people alive up there, if not a little bit scary in that snow. Thanks for sharing
