Yes, it's sad how few people decide not to be authentic on TH-cam. But to those of us who do, it is a great way turning a hobby into a career while entertaining people who are interested. I've had about a dozen of my subscribers go out of their way to find me in person uninvited just because they are sucked into the Cult of Personality, and seem offended when I tell them to F off at knife point.
Aaaaaaaaaahahahaha well thats a thing i suppose! although to be fair we are probably comparing apples and pears, my channel is all about sharing my hobby and so i welcome the interaction, i would say "there arent many 48yr old blokes who still collect old video games" but then id be lying probably a more reasoned statement would be "i dont have many local friends who are into old video games" hence the YT channel and finding like minded people, whereas you, its more a distant relationship (at current on season 3) your just trying to survive i dont suppose at this point you give 2 figs if someone wants to be your "mate" your more concerned with finding a loo and having a shower!

Yeah OG Duffy, I unsubbed as soon as he added Channel Memberships. That Channel had massive potential until then. Funny thing that I found was that he said "I don't expect my subs to donate money" well if that was the case he wouldn't have the button to pay for a memberhip would he. What he should have said is "I don't expect subs to donate money but I really want you to".
OG was probably the best content of its type on TH-cam.
As soon as he mentioned memberships I zoned out.
Then when he introduced the tiers and the bribes I un-subbed from his channel.
I could have stayed and watched it without a membership but his last “free” video was just dull and boring without the usual enthusiasm and content that he puts in.
Everything was just pushing everyone into the memberships and making those that don’t feel unwelcome.
I’m not prepared to fund someone’s collecting habit for them to wave a £600 game at me.
I did the same with Thegebs24 a few years back.

Yeah, i dont mind them selling merchandise, but just asking people for money for early access and crap like that really takes the piss imo. There are channels like RMC where its understandable, but basically if you give alot of these guys money through patreon you're just helping them pay for the games they're showing off in their uploads! 😂

Tbh I watch some channels who have patreons , buy me a coffee and the like. But it seems the uk holds some of the most disingenuous career tubers. I see them reaching across the pond into to very successful channels over there , commenting as if they are the voice of British retro gaming.
Think it’s like any walk of life , you get wrong uns - it’s just horrible to see people falling prey to them.

I will never give money to watch a youtube channel. As I said on goldys video I had to borrow money off a family member once and it killed me having to ask them, so how these people can ask people they don't know for money is beyond me.

At 55 mins spot on. Seeing youtubers as celebrities as guest speakers at gaming markets or events is just wrong. One of the worst videos are reaction videos where they watch someone else’s video and adding nothing of value from themself. They are huge now and they are ridiculous. I love how this video goes ramps up as you go through the video lol.

I was hearing you talk about the different groups and always getting pictures of different TH-camrs in my mind at different points.
I'm pretty new to TH-cam as a hobby, and have met quite a few people through it, the ones who were pricks have since started on a Patreon, while the really nice ones have stayed clear of it.
You've just managed to put a large amount of my experience into a 90 minute nutshell.

Tbh the stuff in here is a few years old and from what others have said here in the comments it seems things have moved on and there are now new schemes to get your money!
It’s a really interesting topic tooty but I think it’ll get lost in arguments both sides. I think part of the problem is that, for those like us, who’ve been around TH-cam for donkeys as content creators we’ve seen the “community” aspect die off big time and replaces with partnerships between channels to steer the direction it takes. Cojones is right though, a decade ago there were a lot more “hobbyists” for the fun of retro gaming who’ve gradually died off and been replaced with people who see YT as the hobby. Nothing wrong with that but I think part of the problem was the unsustainable growth in value of the games making it hard to keep up with the collecting side of the hobby which caused more people (myself included) to change direction. It’s the same with the pokemon card scene on here - exactly same thing happened and now it’s just huge channels opening hundreds of packs and getting all the rare cards. I often miss the community feel TH-cam had a decade ago but it’s still a fun place in pockets!
Very true mate, i suppose something would have to fill the void, oh 100% this whole culture isnt confined to our tiny little corner here on YT as i said a few toy channels i watched did exactly the same thing, i guess im just cut from a different cloth.

What TH-cam needs is a block feature. That way we can search for videos on a particular subject and block those we have no interest in. If you could block an entire channel from appearing in your search results you would find like minded people quicker. That won't happen though. Not sure there is an answer really. When money is a factor people will do and say anything as long as the money keeps flowing.

I cant say I disagree with anything you have said. You have hit the nail on the head. I have been guilty of giving a few quid to a couple of channels in the past because I really wanted to support the community. After events relating to a certain badly behaved retro gaming couple it was like having a bucket of cold water thrown in my face. I cancelled all my patreon subs as clearly the only thing I was supporting was some strangers bank balance. Wish id come to my senses sooner. Now I don't watch any of the "big" channels and cant say I miss them. I have found so many great small channels who clearly do it for the love of the hobby and this is the real community for me. They give their time making vids and ask for nothing in return. They don't need donations to buy 4k cameras or fancy editing. Some of the best community content I have seen could have been filmed on a phone.

You know my thoughts on this mate and you nailed this. For too long it appears this issue has been danced around but it is like a disease which has pretty much killed it all off. The real people are the ones at the bottom, happy to do this for the hobby and to share and get to know others the same. If someone with stoopid curly hair and a baseball cap or a white tank top and a rucksack think they can speak for the collective and be seeen as the voice of the UK Retro Gaming scene and live off the hard earnings of others....what have we come to ? There are a lot of vulnerable people out there who get sucked in to paying money just because they think it gets them into a club or a friendship - I mean at least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he took your money right ?
The good thing is once these people get to the top there is only way to go after that....and that will involve coming back into contact with all the people you trod on, used and abused and quickly dropped on the way back down where they will be happily there waiting to let them know all about it....
And as for these who need money to keep their channel going....well I made my thoughts very clear on that too. Its embarrassing, but there are people out there who fall for it. As it was said if you need money to keep a You Tube channel going, you really shouldn't be doing a You Tube channel. A fair proportion of blame should lie with YT, its out of control, its exploitive and its crazy. Its a pyramid scheme as Dana quite rightly said it was. Good stuff mate, we need more 90 minute rants 😊👍🐻

Makes you laugh when people say "it really helps the channel" what crap, its free to have a channel, it costs nothing except your time and if you're in it for fun then that dont need paying for
They just want the sheep to fund their collection don't they, then they show pickups that their subs have paid for

If it was let's say sopranos on tv back in the day and they said if you pay us £1 per month and you can get an extra episode. I'd have been all over that. I get the equipment schtick, I listen to the retro hour podcast and they make a big deal about how the show is made possible because of their patreons yet they managed before Patreon , and their content hasn't improved with all this new "equipment"

Off your topic but not too dissimilar last week on the news it was on about mail order clothing retailers are charging certain customers for returns, one crazy thing nowadays is they said there's now a growing trend of those influencer people buying a load of stuff simply to take pictures for things like Instagram and sending the stuff straight back, they aren't even bothering to wear them on a night out before returning them, just to take pics to share with their followers, it's all so shallow and fake, honestly I don't know what's going on these days when people look up to this type of "celebrity"

I've left a few WhatsApp groups due to talk of subs, views, etc. But there are plenty out there that don't have that mind set.
My annoyance is people now think to be a tuber you HAVE to have a good camera, sound, TV presenter ways. It's a shame, as I see a few people that could be great community channels but loose their personality chasing YT "success"
And when they dont get it they throw their toys out the pram and quit!

Totally with you Stu. Ive seen a few of the uk retro gaming 'influencers' in person and they are completely two faced. On in particular took great offence when they asked if i watched their channel and i said i hadnt heard of them. I was called an idiot with no life but as soon as my back went up they gave it toes.
In short, i dont watch any of these types you have discussed and make a point to avoid any that i do see.

It’s a bit like onlyfans, people want to feel like they are liked or somehow special. Unfortunately the predators will always prey on the prey. It’s inevitable, like you say, there’s tons of the same content available, you don’t have to pay for it. You’re obviously doing what you do because it brings some value to your life, which most people forget when the money is on the table.

I agree with you here mate, half their channels are nothing special from what I've seen either, these channel's stop being a community channels, and things change,, they don't reply to comments as much and aren't bothered, and there so big now and they just promote as much as they possibly can constantly for more money.
They lose touch with the community which is sad, lets face it, they are just begging for peoples money to support their channel all the time, they started the channel with no money, but now they expect peoples money and free gifts etc, and think their a celebrity etc lol, it all doesn't sit right with me.

When I saw 90 minutes before I clicked I was equal parts curious and equal parts excited (oo er😂), because I LOVE a Tooty rant, but was thinking how on earth could it go on for 90 minutes and still be engaging and make sense AND have substance. I’m sorry for even having an inch of doubt!
I’ve found that a lot of channels who out and out ASK you to sub to their patreon or donate or send or something have always been a bit of a turn off for me because like you said “you’ll do it anyway”. I think a lot of the channels who do it, not just gaming stuff, is because they “can”. Early access is a main one, like yeah ok fair enough you don’t want to wait for stuff and some people are more patient that others on waiting but jeez. Also yes, the “inclusivity” factor is a major one, along with feeling like you’re part of the club/gang. There’s always a “feel” when you watch someone and they start to change, even someone who already had a more amount of subs I’ve found still end up churning out content to “feed the beast”. A main one for me I HATE though is being shouted at through my phone like the person recording the video is on speed or something, they are generally the people who are going down that slippery slope…
I will say though, if TH-cam ever start to charge for using the phrase “this group of people over here” and retroactively backdate then you’re buggered… 😂

Almost everything you have mentioned in this is true. There are a few exceptions i believe to the rules though. I dont ever feel like I need to give people money to watch TH-cam. That's just stupid. I do feel if someone sends me stuff and dont want to take something in return, if they had a patreon I might join it for a couple months as a way to say thanks. Perfect example is if Gordon started a patreon, Id be on that instantly as that man needs something back for his generosity. I would never pay just to get my name at the end of someones video or anything. I would have to have a reason.
I do however know what you mean by spotting it a mile off if people are only in it for the money., or wanting to hit that level.I keep most of my content as raw as possible, but from time to time I'm bored and will add more editing to the videos, but thats more just for my entertainment of making the video. The same as I will make a longer form scripted video if its something I'm truly passionate about. I had that one 360 video do really well, which was nice. People watched, but I've not been chasing that ever since. It was just an interesting part in this youtube thing.
I've made a couple of quid here and there streaming on twitch, but thats just a nice thing from the ads. If I cared at all about the money I'd just be on there all the time, which is further from the reality. I only go on when im bored and want to play something new, and chat to people over a few beers.
This was a genuinely interesting and enjoyable watch. That hour and a half flew by haha.
I will add, I'm not a fan of just watching nothing but CEX content, but I do enjoy watching people go round the retro shops. It doesnt matter if its old stock, I just like to see what these places are like, as to me its a different world. I have nothing like that round me and have to sit there watching being jealous of what people have on their doorstep.

Great video Stu. I have not and never would give any money to any channels. Complete waste of time. Would rather spend it on my own stuff and family. The more popular these channels get all of a sudden they have money to spend on expensive games. All cause people are paying them for 'content'. Nah load of crap. Interesting topic, Toot, and something that has turned me right off certain channels. As you’ve said, I think when tubers talk about the benefits of being a patron, whilst also eluding to the idea that everyone benefits equally (fellow libra here btw 😂) - is bollocks. Obviously the tuber benefits financially and when it feels like they’re taking advantage of that… 🤮 it’s not for me.

I’m glad you highlighted the different communities. We are all part of the TH-cam community which is a bit meaningless like saying we all part of the world community - which brushes over the vastly different sub communities. There’s us in the “hobbyists retro community” and there’s the “business retro community”.. i say business avoiding the term “professional” as I don’t want to inflate their ego as they all individuals with no more right to opinion as as us minions. We are all f**king minions. Not “professionals” unless you’re a real media company or real celebrity eg actors and pop stars that have their own TH-cam channels. I don’t want those “business retro tubers” wannabes pretending to be hobbyist, as they really don’t care about the hobby itself but chasing subs using the hobby as a vehicle just like you said. I spot them a mile off and quickly switch off.

It can be a parasocial relationship between viewer and TH-camr, the viewer may think the tuber is their friend, and some tubers exploit that. You see it when channels have P.O. Boxes and get sent pretty expensive stuff. It’s uncomfortable, the person sending it is trying to buy friendship in some way.
What happens at the events you go to when these “pro” tubers turn up, do they avoid your stall!

I like a few some channel pay is to get their name dropped in a video as it makes them feel wanted and special etc and omg the free gifts all the time and say don’t say me anything well clearly giving out their address.
I used to watch a channel after following them on instagram and collected Wii and mega drive but now a member of a Ghetto gang have switched over to buying Xbox games and always share the links to the his channel . I also noticed they jumped from 500 to 1k in weeks after becoming a gang member so I’m guessing all the gang subbed her.

Tbh im surprised there hasnt been another platform to challenge YT, but i doubt it would money free as they'd have to copy the blueprint.
It's took me a few sittings to get through this but I don't think it could have been put better.
The narcissistic part (as a "content creator")
I'll be honest there were a couple of moments in there that made me question what I do on the tubes, but while I'd love to make it big one day that isn't the driver for me. I want to document my collection and look back at what I got, when and how it's grown and changed. I do (sometimes) have that moment where I look at the video analytics and think why do I do this on here if no-one is watching when a video appears to be performing poorly and I've asked for feedback in the past from other tubers on what I could be doing differently but ultimately I keep doing what I am doing because it's what I am comfortable doing. I try hard some times with editing and if I find something new out in the editing I remember it or save it for future use because as time has gone on for me I have actually grew to enjoy some of the techy/video editing side of things and learning how to do it and hell I've even taken it to my real job and used the skills there.
The more relevant to the video part (in response to your points)
I can't remember the video of yours I watch but earlier this year you mentioned the whole unsubbing from the content you aren't getting anything from and I've pretty much dropped all the big tubers which was a shock for me but I wasn't getting much from their content I wasn't getting elsewhere and I only really watch one of the bigger tubers but all my interactions with them, in person and the comments section, have left me feeling like they do genuinely seem like a good egg.
The one point I am on the fence about is the comments side of things, don't get me wrong not replying to comments on your videos is a big no no and while I wasn't great at it when I was new to the scene now I won't leave a comment unreplied to, it's just rude imo and unless the comment doesn't leave me anywhere to go with my reply I will always read every point in the comment and reply to it if I can because if you take the time to write me a message it's only fair that I do the same, it's a social contract. Whereas for the past year or so now I have very much been disengaged from other peoples comments section, partially as I was mainly watching on my TV (yes that old excuse) and partially because of the loss in my family that left me not wanting to do much.
I don't really want to name names but for me the big turning point was ERG (IYKYK) he seemed like a nice guy and coming up through the ranks he engaged with us little tubers however as he surpassed us he decided he didn't have time to be part of the community and take part and as his channel grew you saw more of the evergreen rubbish and what content was put out was all feeding the algorithm. By the end I felt dirty ever wanting to talk to the guy and felt like he used the community as springboard. I didn't realise until today that he'd deleted his channel but imo it wasn't that big a loss to the community.
Keep being you Stu, there isn't another you on the tubes and it's always good to see content from you :)
Cheers Jim, we've all been there when you question yourself and ask why and thats what i always try to get people to ask themselves, because if you are only doing it for fame/money then 9 out of 10 times you are on a hiding to nothing, nothing wrong with the editing mate it was more to highlight how the content is along with all the other red flags not in isolation, some people actually think because they took X hours to edit a video they are somehow "entitled" to get millions of views (yes thats happened) i saw through ERG early doors mate so had little to nothing to do with him, i think he burnt all his bridges and by the time he realised he'd not made it big enough to not care and so couldnt come back to the "community" sorry for your loss mate i suppose thats the other thing when its a hobby and you have people around you, you can come and go as you need, you dont need to be making content 24/7, look after yourself Jim and hopefully see you at the market soon!

It’s insanity. And it’s why I chose not to make a comeback.

Its a laugh. Tubers get paid via patreon and then make up silly content like find a game on my list. Then buy a busted up copy from a shop 800 miles away from home. I don't mind getting paid from TH-cam but I wouldn't go begging like you say. If I can't do it on my own I won't do it.

This is a very good video and says things that need to be said. I've started frim scratch with a new account and tbh, I wont be subscribing to many people. Ive always been happy for people to make money from their ad revenue, but the ebegging is disgusting and ive never given a penny to any of them. John Hancock, Metal Jesus Sucks, Gebs24....theyre all the same. They simply want your money to better their quality of life. I find it sad there are people who hand over money to these scammers.

Well said Stu, all valid points. I too have no issues with Ad Revenue. If I was homeless/living on the streets then begging would be a necessity to eat & stay alive, for these people Ebegging is not a necessity, they don't need money. They are sat in front of massive collections so obviously they have money to begin with. Like you say they don't give a shit about their subs, in my opinion they see their subs as customers. One of the things that gets to me is these Twitch streamers who say "Oh & you get a FREE sub" if you have Amazon Prime, well NO you still have to pay for Amazon Prime so it's not free is it? Hardly any of them can take any criticism either, I've tried calling them out on their shitty behaviour in the comments section & they either block you or delete your comments, for me that just shows that they know what they're doing is wrong. Anyway great video people like you are the True community & hopefully this video gives other like minded people a voice too.

This resonates with me a lot and was why I faded out of the community because I noticed the channels that had “infiltrated” the community but worse still, a good amount of people in our community had suddenly gravitated towards some of these and the real part of the word community faded out for the majority. I loved the meetups and socialising, I remember the evening at Arcade Club where we were all just chilling out, playing games and having a laugh and thats the part of it all that I still really miss.
