  • It's around that time when you'll Find Norfolk Island Pine in almost every store for the holidays :) Just though i would share some tips on how i keep mine alive :)
    keep the soil moist but not wet
    needs good humidity
    keep it warm... if you live in a cold climate it will not survive freezing temps on your door step.

    I bought mine back in 2018 and it's taking over my dining room. The only thing I did was: Put it in a pot big enough for it to grow, place it in front of the south facing window so it can get plenty of sun and just keep it there, feed it every 4 months with 5 fertilizer sticks, keep the the A.C. vent located above it closed, water it until the runoff tray is completely filled with water to keep the humidity up around the tree, and set the pot on a couple of bricks to keep the roots from sitting in the water. If it keeps on growing like it's growing, I'm going to need lto look for a house with a higher ceiling in about a couple of years.

    I thought my Norfolk Pine was several smaller plants, but they all split off the same trunk just below the soil.
    I have found that the pretty glass bulbs that provide constant moisture work great with these plants. They have a long stem with a bulb at the bottom. You fill them up with water and insert the stem into the soil.
    If you want to put mini lights on your Norfolk, use the kind that don't get hot and wrap them close to the inside of the tree so they don't weight it down too much.

    they always sell these as bonsais in stores like walmart. usually they have the gravel thats glued in place.... crazy... but you can always give one a try as a bonsai .. you can buy one cheap right after chrismas

    some plants just have different requirements... lots of our house plants are trees or large bushes in the wild. I think with the redwood... it needs more humidity.. in the wild it lives in the valleys of the mountains and has heavy fog each day. some plants (not all) just have special requirements that are hard to replicate in our home (not impossible).

    YAY! this is a wonderful plant :) i never let this plant dry out completely. however the plant doesn't like to be too wet either... in the heat of the summer i usually water my plant 2 or 3 times a week. i have never attempted to take this plant outside in the summer... but if i did i would put it in a shady spot.

    That tree is beautiful so I will be buying one right after Christmas when they go on sale for just a couple bucks. It has no chance of surviving here in Phoenix outside but maybe I'll get to enjoy it for a few years indoors

  • @PlantzNThings
    @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    lol... i see the similar here... they put them outside on their front porch all decorated for christmas... the frost and snow kills them and curls them up in no time...

  • @PlantzNThings
    @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    yea this plant totally needs more humidity than Phoenix outside can offer...lol.. i wish you luck with it when you get it... you might need a misting system around it to keep the humidity up.

    I usually leave the dead needles and branches on the tree because it makes it look natural. There's nothing more beautiful than Nature. :-)

    biggest problem with that plants is , that they absorb (dunno if that's the right word) a lot of humidity from the air by their needles. that's why they grow/grew on places with a lot of fog e.g. the coasts.
    that's also a reason why they die out.
    if you really want to get into that plants i recommend the mbreg[dot]de community. they do know a lot about that trees. even if its a german community,just post there in english !

    I have never tried ... i would assume that the easiest way would be by seed... layering might work too

    I worked at a greenhouse, I started with a baby looks great. I wish I could post a picture of a mother tree that I took home. Norma Jean is 41 inches.. no trim. I added a humidifier to her, some of her fronds were getting yellow /brown tips. she's a big girl, but was wondering how wintering works indoors. does she need fertilizer in the winter? my little guy is very dark green. Norma, however is a lighter color. should I worry? I haven't had any issues with dead branches.

    Need Larger Pot so the roots can breath !!! Also need to Mist the plant and this tree should be kept on the moist side.. They love Misting ....Filtered light.....Not strong light...and feed plant food 1/2 strength once a month....

    • @FinnMiaBelle
      @FinnMiaBelle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacquelyn hi! Can i feed him regular miracle grow mix? I have the standard blend? I'm about to repot mine , I commented above with all the details, but he's outgrown his pot and I live in a dry wintry climate. I just started misting him. Will this suffice for moisture? Or is it not enough? Should I break out the humidifier? Their is about 3 or 4 stems in my small plant.... I bought the next size up pot. A 6 inch I believe, is this big enough? Or should i go bigger? The thing is already budding, which it's a bit early from what I've read? Also, with my experience, the decorations the store put on him seemed to kill the stem they were placed on, so I removed them all. I don't think they like to be restricted like that haha theyre sensitive little things I guess. Idk, maybe it was just my specific plant. My end goal is to have a very tall tree. I hope to get him to grow big. I've seen photos of well established Norfolks and they are beautiful!!!

    eventually it will get transplanted into a bigger pot. I keep wanting to think it's a small plant :)

    I just got one on xmas eve, it's been 2 and a half weeks, and the soil is still super damp. I'm thinking they over watered or something.....not sure what to do...I'm going to report it because I see roots poking out one of the drain holes. It's in a 4 or 6 inch plastic pot......I am worried that being wet this long isn't good.....it has a plastic clear thing around the pot that came with it...I just took it off to let air get around it a bit....not sure what to do.

  • @PlantzNThings
    @PlantzNThings  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should I be misting my plant ? How much water per week in the same size pot you have?

  • @FinnMiaBelle
    @FinnMiaBelle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this video is old, but I bought a Norfolk pine around Christmas time, it's about 7-8inches tall, in a small starter pot. Their is about 3 to 4 stems and it already needs to be repotted. I bought thr next size up pot, is this good? Or should i go bigger? Also, I'm in western NY, with a very dry wintry climate. It's dry indoors, but I keep vigilante about watering it, and I just recently started misting him with a water bottle to help with moisture. He seems to be okay, but I'm skeptical this will be enough.......hes already starting to bud at the tips (a bit early from what I've read) also, I read that they need a succulent type soil (sandy) but he did not come with that kind Of soil, he's in a standard, dense soil mix. When i repot him, should i put him im a Sandy-er soil? Any help would be appreciated. I saw what these babies can grow to, and reallllly want to keep the thing alive and get him to tree-status 😅

    Hehe, yeah I'm trying to learn how to forage. Pine needle tea is a staple. If your interested look up GreenDeane of EatTheWeeds on youtube. He's very knowledgeable, and you would be surprised how much food or medicinal plants we have around in an urban environment sometimes even used in landscaping.

    I live in south Louisiana and have a Norfolk pine as an inside plant...I do bring it outside on nice sunny days, but my problem is a few of the tips are turning brown...what causes this sir?

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doug Zeringue most common reason is dry air or soil that is allowed to dry for extended periods.

    • @Pondue_At_Large

      If you let the soil dry out a bit, it disrupts the life cycle of the gnats. Be careful though, he says not to let the soil dry out for extended periods.

    HEY WHATS UP? I WENT TO A FRIENDS PLACE WHERE HE HAD A COUPLE OF WHAT I THINK ARE THE SAME TYPE OF PINE TREES..... BUT THEY ARE IN TERRIBLE CONDITION, I ASKED FOR 1, TO SEE IF I CAN TAKE CARE OF IT.... THE ONE I HAVE IS ABOUT 4 FEET TALL BUT ONLY HAS LIKE 3 LAYERS OF LEAVES LEFT AND MOST OF IT LOOKS DEAD..... WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST APROACH... I JUST GOT IT YESTERDAY, IM IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, ITS IN A LARGE CAN IM GOING TO GET A POT FOR IT RIGHT NOW....SHOULD I KEEP INSIDE OR OUTSIDE ALL DAY.... WOULD APRECIATE ANY ADVICE..... DO THE REST OF THE LEAVES GROW BACK?...

      this plant might be hardy to grow outside in your area. these plants like to be evenly moist. if they get too dry they will suffer. they also like high humidity
