- Daniel Mendoza is one of the most famous fighters from the bare knuckle era. Because of that we are lucky enough to know lots about him.
This video takes a look at his early years, how he developed his skills, and how he became a professional fighter.

Thank you for this video story of greatness about my 6th Great Grandfather, Daniel Mendoza. I can confirm that he is also the 6th Great Grandfather of the actor Richard Henry (Peter) Sellers. Mendoza’s famous boxing portrait is even shown in a scene of the Pink Panther film in Inspector Clueso’s office. The family were indeed very poor and he aspired to more and achieved it, against the odds. Needless to say, to this day his family are still very proud of him

Damn, I was reading about him on Wiki yesterday after being curious about the history of fighting.
This guy was a menace - apparently there was a story where he beat up three people on a way to fight. He beat some guy for just staring at him funny.
Hi Dannii, your confirmation about Sellers being 6th great grandson, could you please shed some more light on the lineage? It's just that many genealogists can only find his grandmother Welcome Mendoza being granddaughter of Mordecai Mendoza, Daniel's first cousin, unless there is a second path?

i have enjoyed this as all you videos. Danny Mendoza is legend , and though several film makers have started projects based on his life and career , its about time one brought theses to something like a conclusion. what a story and what a man. The east end front-wheeler who renegated news of the storming of the bastile to the second page of the times........
and even when the days of his championship were over it was Daniel Mendoza who stood bravely as second to molynieux. Absolute legend. looking forward to part 2

Great video! I've only recently become acquainted with early British pugilism after listening to JS's patron episode. Although he also covered much of Daniel Mendoza, I have to say I find this one a lot more comprehensive and detailed. Keep them coming!

Good job, I have taught a college PE course which included boxing history from its historic beginnings in ancient Baghdad to the end of the bare knuckle era at Silliman University, Dumaguete City. Three time USA Boxing Coach of years 1972, 76, and 77, Coach Joe Clough taught the mental & physical part and my wife, a certified USa Boxing & ABAP(Philippines)clinician, official taught the competition technical rules while I taught the history. . We spent much time on the English revival of prizefighting which started as early as 1631, and was reported by"The Mercury" ithe early 1670s. Manny Pacquaio visited us in August 2010. I have an extensive background as an advocate for Olympic-style boxing, hail from Philly where I lived a couple of blocks from Champs Gym(Sonny Liston & Harold Johnson) trained when I was a teen.

I met a Mendoza in Birmingham in the 80's & mentioned Daniel. He said they still have 2 oil-paintings of him from his lifetime.

@@EnglishMartialArts They are very famous. I tried to buy them but was instantly refused as they're family heirlooms. I hate to mention my collector days, as I began in 1952 and amassed a huge amount of material, autographs inc Dempsey, Tunney ETC but gave it all away. I knew another collector [I owned a bookshop in Brum 12 years] with the earliest boxing photo circa 1830-40s. As a kid I visited Bendigo's grave frequently [I'm from Beeston where he died]. My great-grandfather 'Congo' Russell was the bareknuckle champ of Lincolnshire for 19 years. The violence I grew up with & engaged in I turned my back on. I worked in a bookshop on Tottenham Court Road circa 1961, went for lunch, and Cassius & Joe Louis came in, so I missed the pair of them.

Hey Oz. Very much enjoying your videos on classical pugilism. Am also a Mendoza fan and fascinated about his life/works...I've read his autobiography, which is great to read, even if somewhat self congratulatory. 'The Fighter from Whitechapel' is also fun, but doesn't really provide any more knowledge than Mendoza himself. I wondered if you could suggest any other books/articles etc about the man himself...early home life, later life on the 'show tour' and anything maybe about his life as a publican...? Much appreciated.

Off or on the subject, I was telling my very Irish boxing coach today, about your videos. He made an immediate comment as I was standing in the middle of the ring. One would have thought they would have figured it out sooner..He said, think about how far boxing has come in since 1920s.
The queensberry rules had only been around for 50 years or so in 1920, so the sport was adapting at a fast pace to the changes that a new and different ruleset had forced upon it.
Our ability to capture technique on video and asses it has made a big difference, out scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology has changed out ability to train effectively. But are we better at punching? I'd say no. Just better suited to the current rules.
Sir, Mendoza and Gem Mace were always 2 of my favorites to read about. I guess its because when I was young all of my non-ring related fights seemed to be with other young men that were larger than I. Mind you, its not that I remember that much about the two of them. I am enjoying this and your fight breakdowns immensely. Thank-you very much, Dante.
It's very easy to like Mendoza (and indeed Mace). He was such an interesting character, and so damn good at what he did. Sadly I never really experienced being ths smaller guy until relatively recently. I was a big lad, and reached my adult size very early in life. It's caused me a few problems facing larger opponents as I find it unusual and a little daunting.

I understand. At about 5'8" even when fighting other light middleweights I usually gave up height. This did cause some problems on the rather rare occasions I fought someone shorter. On a taller opponent try making them "come down to your level". That is make them have to spread their legs to punch at you. They will be a bit off balance. This will be especially troublesome when they have to move laterally. You can "step in" almost at will on a lateral move, land 2 or 3 good ones and move out smoothly. Thank-you, Dante.

Thanks for this, I been fascinated by Mendoza for over 20 years when I was a teenager, collected the very hard to find literature on him and by him. Your narrative really brought his story to life and done him justice. His story should be a film, but don't let Hollywood get there hands on it! Many thanks

Lol, that one is technically a HEMA mug. Some of our esteemed colleagues from Schola Gladiatoria took to refering to our proud and noble Unicorn as My Little Pony, so intead of taking offence I decided to just roll with it. So now I am the proud possesor of many my little pony items, all because if the obvious innate superiority of English Martial Arts over other, lesser forms of fighting. :D
LOL! As soon as I saw it I thought, "oh, no, a medical receptacle for emergency nasal clearance" and immediately braced myself.
I have noticed that SG does have an issue with Unicorns. I introduced my very own special one but have to report that there was an immediate, er, debate as to the ontological existence of this very real item. Not wanting to push the boundaries of logic and reason to a definite and undeniable conclusion in favour of Pink Unicorns, it was felt necessary to "go underground" and employ subterfuge and guile to give it a little SG home without drawing attention to its presence to the unreasonable, and I must say, dogmatic deniers.
Yep my bros mendoza was a prize fighter he created boxing to be an art of skills of fight and thats what i like small man he was tall 170cm and heavy exactly 73 kilos small but really fast and hard man to fight 37 victories 30 ko's and i think 3 lost matches what a fighter isnt he he inspired me tho

One of the things a "no rules" fight seems to be a good measure of, aside from all-out-fighting ability and bottom, is an individual's personal limits where Good Form is concerned. The football kicks seem to show a certain shortcoming there, but then again BOTH combatants agreed to go all out. But then, if that is the case, the wrestler showed good form by NOT dropping his man on his head four times, as he could have, but then followed it up by kicking him in the head? Was it just adrenaline? Hmm...
