I don't think everything is right in the team. I also don't think he has respect of all the players like Rahul Dravid did. We all know his political inclination. I think it's a bad move to make such a person head coach who has such strong political inclinations.
Ponting observation is valid but he should also take into consideration on the type of pitches that VK has played in this 5 years, Root has been the most consistent but most of his centuries has been on flat pitches, same is the case with williamson also who missed most of the important tours due to injuries. VK is as good as smith, root or williamson but sometimes stats doesn't show the true picture.
