I stumbled across these 1970s Corrie eps by accident on TH-cam and I'm binge-watching and loving them to bits. I'm a British expat living in Sydney who is probably the only Brit who doesn't get the national obsession for a cup of tea or a "brew". And I'd forgotten how funny Ena Sharples was. Great uploads. I am going to end up being 50 stones if I keep eating while watching Classic Coronation Street ‼️ Such an addictive programme. My favourite scene in these 'lorry crash' episodes is Violet Carson's scenes, especially when Ena offered up a prayer for Tracey's safe return. Ena could speak her mind and the street may not have liked what she had to say but she was right, Ena was a very wise lady, straight talking, no flannel, but a heart of gold, as Violet said of Ena "when things are not going well in the street Ena is the first one they turn to, and children are not afraid of her (Ena), they come over and hold Mrs.Sharples hand". The prayer scene was played with truth and great sincerity, Ena was a true believer who never forgot to pray every night. The love and the respect the rest of the street have for her, always addressing her as "Mrs.Sharples".
Superb episodes from the 70s. It all started going downhill with Corrie from 1990s with sensational and unbelievable storyline. I stopped watching it in late thec 2000s when I realised it was a chore rather than pleasure to watch it. All the comedy and ordinary everyday chit-chat gone forever.
Me too Minesh. I was a Corrie fan from the 70s; these days I have access to daily "new episodes" on one of my TV streaming services. The storylines are so daft I can't be bothered to watch. Agreed - she had a long and interesting life in Corrie - 4 husbands, I think, plus 2 spells in jail when the Corrie writers lost the plot. RIP Anne Kirkbride. She was brilliant.
Absolutely right, this 1979 episode is a perfect representation of 'Coronation Street's' glory years, which in my view can be traced from Elsie Tanner's return/Mike Baldwin's debut in 1976, to Hilda Ogden's exit on Christmas Day 1987. And to a huge extent, we must thank Corrie super-producer Bill Podmore for that never to be matched, golden era on the Street. Podmore was a genius producer, who came to the rescue in the mid-'Seventies slump, and recognised what was weak on the show and needed to be dropped, and what should be boosted - most obviously, the comedy. Among Podmore's many masterstrokes were introducing a major new Southern character in the shape of Mike Baldwin, and creating the winning trio of Stan, Hilda and Eddie, whose scenes were some of the best. It was a mark of Podmore's strong leadership - and the immense talent of the cast and writers/production crew - that 'Coronation Street' survived the loss of so many major characters in 1983/4, including Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker, Len Fairclough, Stan Ogden, Eddie Yeats, Ena Sharples, Albert Tatlock, Bert Tilsley and Fred Gee. What happened to Deirdrie is my worst nightmare. I just dont know how someone could possibly ever get over something like that. Very well acted. And how she kept screaming tracy tracy over and over was so distressing :(
Yes, I agree. However, I feel it was then spoiled a little bit by the over-used and typical (by 1979) "Deirdre Reaction" of wandering off in a daze, which is exactly what she did before, when attacked. On that occasion she wandered off and was going to jump onto the motorway. This time she wandered off and was going to jump into the canal.
I don’t know why some of these episodes weren’t featured on the Network dvd box set releases, rather than the ones they went with, same goes for the ‘80s. While memorable storylines are featured, they seem to have gone for the beginning or middle of stories rather than the climax with a number of them. One example being the lorry crash episode, I’m sure we’d have preferred the aftermath episode! Thanks to your compilations we can tie up the loose ends and see what happens next.

But all credit to Lynne Perrie, she created a legendary Corrie battleaxe in Ivy Tilsley, the character you loved to hate. Her fights with daughter-in-law Gail over the years (usually over mummy's boy 'R. Brian), were great entertainment. Ironic the scriptwriters eventually morphed Gail into a latter-day Ivy!
It was a '70's - early '80's thing, in the UK, Australia & other places. I still have the sharks tooth pendant my dad wore & wear his silver Virgo (star sign) pendant as a bracelet everyday. I also had a boyfriend (back then) that wore a silver-plated bullet on a chain. He was ex-british army & was shot, while serving in Northern Ireland. Yup, shot with that exact bullet!
I noticed Mike's long chain and gold sovereign pendant too, very much the fashion then. I loved Mike's chunky gold bracelet too, he was a proper 'Seventies heart throb/macho man - you just knew he wore lashings of 'Brut' aftershave too! 🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful and a tragic storyline. Has the audience engaged and showed real human reactions to an incident like that. I know many people who would have acted like that woman Hilda was talking about who helped remove the rubble faster than the men :)

Common place back in those days. Prams were so massive, some still are, that people just had to leave them at the doors of pubs, corner shops and other such public buildings. My mum used to leave her German Shepherd by my own Silver Cross monstrossity with me inside it of course, while she went into shops in the mid 1980s. She did get at least one dressing down from this lady who obviously had the shock of her life, when she saw a small helpless baby girl all alone in this massive pram with the dog. Now, our dog although she was GSD, wouldn't have hurt me, not by any stretch of the imagination. She protected me bless her, like I was a million pounds/dollars lottery ticket. She even slept underneath my cot every night, until her over guarding sadly got to the point where mum had no other option but to rehome her dog, because she, the dog, was so over protective of her immediate family, especially me, mum reckoned she would have gone on to attack or maul somebody. She did go on to have 3 other dogs, but you never forget your animals. I love hearing some of the old stories, especially about the GSD.

These days you could leave a child outside for 2 minutes and 99.9% of the time it would be alright but there's always the slight risk of a deranged person or a woman whose lost a child and become unbalanced passing by, and there was just as much risk then.
I rememberbeing left outside shops in my pushchair in the late seventies. There wasn't much room in shops. On buses they had to take the babies out of the pram and fold it, then put it in the luggage space.
The first month revealing Ivy as an unbearable, domineering control freak. Her stance during the strike was acceptable but in domestic family issues she is intolerable. Precious Brian is pathetic "Is me washing done, mam?" Bert somehow puts up with her. Gail gradually becomes Ivy Mark ll. Ivy is essentially an irritant.
45:47 deirdrie's voice is hoarse as they filmed her screaming TRACEY! a million times on the outdoor set before the filmed the indoor scenes before the crash happened

And despite the (now) known health issues of cigarettes, our governments still won't ban the bloody things because they can't live without the billions of pounds/dollars in tax revenue.

Vera confronting the youth in the shop and giving him a slap was the first indication of the loud mouth, bad tempered Vera that we're more familiar with. Before this, when she was a semi-regular character, she was a lot quieter woman than what she was when she became more prominent.

Gale is months younger than my mum, so, she would have to be about 19, 20 years old here. Her voice is ridiculously high for her age group here. A two-year-old can go much lower pitched.
I think Deidre is supposed to be in her early 20s', but unless she's out she wears the kind of pinny more suited to a woman at least 40 years older than her. They should have let her look like someone in her age group, not make her prematurely middle-aged. It looks like she swaps clothes with Emily. Actual middle-aged Deidre looked more contemporary than her much younger self.
That’s how they dressed back then . I was 22 and my mother in law was 65 that’s when the first bell bottoms came out and I just bought a pair and I’m. 70 in a few weeks .
Honestly Gail is annoying with that mousetrap storyline. Dumping Paul didn't change Suzi did it? She saw what she didn't like at the Gatsby yet she didn't turn a new leaf. And well done Vera for nabbing that thief in Renee's shop.

2023: Imagine if we stopped the work day to organise, cook and produce a fully home cooked 'Dinner' (Lunch) washed down with a few pints of beer these days! That would be the end of any levels of production! No Wonder all the work went to China!
Back then, mothers left their kids in prams outside shops and pubs assuming nothing bad would happen. And mostly nothing bad did happen. That storyline was back when Corrie writers were living in the real world. Love these old episodes. xx
@@SuzyQ334I was left outside shops in a big solid Silver Cross pram when I was a baby, complete with a very over protective German Shepherd dog my mum's dog. We did also have a smaller Mcclaren buggy stroller like Tracey was in, which could have gone in to the pub if Deirdre pulled it inside backwards and parked it up, but then I guess, Tracey wouldn't have survived the crash had she been inside at the front of the building. Wow!
I'm guessing Annie Walkers "Iron Lady , Old Britannia" character was an ironic joke? Her reaction to that crash (both immediate and afterwards) was nothing short of weak. If not hilarious. How her character was allowed to be cast as feared is beyond me. Len speaking to Alf in his coma when Rene was present,..erm maybe stay away from the boozing and fighting 😂 The storyline was done with such realism towards the reaction of the characters immediately and days after that would be missing from today's product( if I watched today's product)
ironic deirdre is discussing mike then goes onto have an affair with him 4 years later also like they way baby tracy is acting like a real toddler and they just act around her, unlike the mute toddlers we get on corrie today
I ""know Mike had at least one son, not too long before I was born in 1983. I love binge watching all these vintage classic episodes, especially before I was born.
So bizarre that Dierdre left Tracey outside the pub. One in a long line of terrible parenting decisions that the character made during the years following. Crime may have been lower then, but Manchester had been the scene of terrible child abductions and murders, in the decade preceeding. And in 1979, the Yorkshire Ripper was still at large, one of whose victims was murdered in Manchester. Although the accident was a crazy fluke, leaving her out in the street alone was just madness. Dierdre needed a good, hard slap.
Lots had to leave them outside as it was so difficult to bring the stroller and open the heavy doors and children played outside then and were safe back then .
Ahhhh, there it is. The episode where Vera turns into the shrieking harpy, fish wife, flaming COW,, Instigator, who will never cease biting the hand that feeds her, and coming the victim whenever it's even suggested that she might want to live up to the terms of her employment.
Isn't it odd? The police knocked on the door and were let in, within seconds. Deidre went out the back way, within that very short time. When they'd found her gone, not one of them thought to go out and have a butchers up the ginnel.
Emily's description of Dierdre to the police... long fair hair (it's brown) and round glasses (they're square)... my god woman, couldn't you have done better than that, when you see her every day? She had been staring at her lying prone on the sofa in that long, red mac for god knows how long, and she couldn't recall what she was wearing? TUT.
Alf leaving a great job with the Post Office to work in the corner shop was very silly, the story had always been that Renee couldn't afford any employees, the shop just doesn't make that much money. So Alf leaving a great job like that with pretty good benefits, like a pension I would bet, is ridiculous. The writers should've come up with a better reason so that he had to leave his job, other than just fancying it!

Real tedium here… Deidre was at fault for leaving the kid on the street and all the crap characters in hospital gives rise to some really squirming script writing.

That hint from Hilda to Rita in corner shop about Darrens death in 1970 tells you all about old Coronation Street. And it’s sadly missed today.

Poison ivy was an annoying petty little woman, was glad when the street got rid.

Common place back in those days. Prams were so massive, some still are, that people just had to leave them at the doors of pubs, corner shops and other such public buildings. My mum used to leave her German Shepherd by my own Silver Cross monstrossity with me inside it of course, while she went into shops in the mid 1980s. She did get at least one dressing down from this lady who obviously had the shock of her life, when she saw a small helpless baby girl all alone in this massive pram with the dog. Now, our dog although she was GSD, wouldn't have hurt me, not by any stretch of the imagination. She protected me bless her, like I was a million pounds/dollars lottery ticket. She even slept underneath my cot every night, until her over guarding sadly got to the point where mum had no other option but to rehome her dog, because she, the dog, was so over protective of her immediate family, especially me, mum reckoned she would have gone on to attack or maul somebody. She did go on to have 3 other dogs, but you never forget your animals. I love hearing some of the old stories, especially about the GSD.

These days you could leave a child outside for 2 minutes and 99.9% of the time it would be alright but there's always the slight risk of a deranged person or a woman whose lost a child and become unbalanced passing by, and there was just as much risk then.
I rememberbeing left outside shops in my pushchair in the late seventies. There wasn't much room in shops. On buses they had to take the babies out of the pram and fold it, then put it in the luggage space.
The first month revealing Ivy as an unbearable, domineering control freak. Her stance during the strike was acceptable but in domestic family issues she is intolerable. Precious Brian is pathetic "Is me washing done, mam?" Bert somehow puts up with her. Gail gradually becomes Ivy Mark ll. Ivy is essentially an irritant.

And despite the (now) known health issues of cigarettes, our governments still won't ban the bloody things because they can't live without the billions of pounds/dollars in tax revenue.

Vera confronting the youth in the shop and giving him a slap was the first indication of the loud mouth, bad tempered Vera that we're more familiar with. Before this, when she was a semi-regular character, she was a lot quieter woman than what she was when she became more prominent.
In the days when a disaster in the street was a real TV event and handled very well. Now there's a disaster every 2 weeks and it's just awful.
These episodes after the lorry crash are quality brilliant writing and acting , so much better than the mediocre stuff on offer in 2023.

I think Deidre is supposed to be in her early 20s', but unless she's out she wears the kind of pinny more suited to a woman at least 40 years older than her. They should have let her look like someone in her age group, not make her prematurely middle-aged. It looks like she swaps clothes with Emily. Actual middle-aged Deidre looked more contemporary than her much younger self.

I'm guessing Annie Walkers "Iron Lady , Old Britannia" character was an ironic joke? Her reaction to that crash (both immediate and afterwards) was nothing short of weak. If not hilarious. How her character was allowed to be cast as feared is beyond me.

So bizarre that Dierdre left Tracey outside the pub. One in a long line of terrible parenting decisions that the character made during the years following. Crime may have been lower then, but Manchester had been the scene of terrible child abductions and murders, in the decade preceeding. And in 1979, the Yorkshire Ripper was still at large, one of whose victims was murdered in Manchester. Although the accident was a crazy fluke, leaving her out in the street alone was just madness. Dierdre needed a good, hard slap.

Alf leaving a great job with the Post Office to work in the corner shop was very silly, the story had always been that Renee couldn't afford any employees, the shop just doesn't make that much money. So Alf leaving a great job like that with pretty good benefits, like a pension I would bet, is ridiculous. The writers should've come up with a better reason so that he had to leave his job, other than just fancying it!
Alf was an absolute arsehole to be fair. He would have been no loss.
