    PRS 305 is simply a 3 single coil direct mount pickups, typical Strat 5 way switch. So, VERY normal "S" type of guitar. I have had a few of them. If you are having REAL issues, who knows....if you are having the TYPICAL Strat thing, then the 2 & 4 positions will be naturally quieter. The ohm reading goes way down in those 2 positions. I'm not sure of your experiences with "S" style guitars, so that is why I bring this up. I simply use a compressor and it makes all positions equal. Cheers.

    To me, a soulless guitar is one that doesn't resonate well. Not necessarily having anything to do with the pickups, but I hate picking up guitars that just feel like solid planks of of dead wood. I want the guitar to vibrate.

    • @davidrees1840
      @davidrees1840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scott Grove debunked this. I like the feel of a resonant guitar, but my best sustaining guitar is my least resonant (a frankenstrat). I have 2 strats, 2 teles, and 2 les Paul's, and 1 les paul is acoustically way louder than any guitar I've played, but is no louder once it's plugged in. I think it's normal to prefer a resonant guitar's feel, but the more resonant it is, the more energy is being dissipated, and therefore detracting from sustain.

    • @MadMax_1984
      @MadMax_1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@davidrees1840 Isn't resonant and sustain the same thing? Resonant is continuation to ring....what are you saying?

    • @davidrees1840
      @davidrees1840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MadMax_1984 hmm, I see what you mean and I'm kind of at a loss to explain, but it'll tell you what Scott did to illustrate (he has a million guitars btw): he plucks a string on a bunch of guitars and measures the sustain, and the pattern that emerges is #1: bolt on, #2: set neck, and neck-through in last place ( the opposite of what I'd always heard and believed). He then says that pedal-steel guitars have the most sustain and almost zero resonance. I think vibrations transferred from the strings to the body are wasted energy, and that a solid steel les paul, eg, would transfer more of those vibrations back through the guitar to the string thereby boosting sustain. Huh, look at that, I'm not really at a loss!

    I can’t say specifically what Gibson’s situation is exactly, but we all have to remember that they did file Chapter 11.
    All of their decisions and actions may not be entirely their decisions.
    Chapter 11, allows them to stay in business to try to pay their creditors, but that comes with caveats, such as, they are assigned a US Trustee who helps formulate their business plan to pay their creditors, which a judge then had to approve.
    The trustee monitors their case very closely.
    If the trustee thinks they can get money to pay their creditors or even improve their share in the market by eliminating copies through infringement lawsuits, they may not have a choice, but to try.
    Closing the Memphis factory may not have been their decision.
    Also, the trustee would also be approving what happened with all of their assets, ie. The destroyed Firebird X’s didn’t get ran over without their appointed trustee signing off on it or even requiring it, for whatever reason?
    My main point being, every business decision they are making right now, was either part of an approved plan by the Judge or is being closely monitored and approved by their trustee.
    This could be how all the lawsuits and cease and desist’s etc. are “inherited”, even though they may not have even been served yet, because it may have been part of the original Chapter 11 proceedings to try to recoup revenue or protect aspects of their brand?
    Remember, the current CEO was hired after the Chapter 11, so the plan was probably in place prior to and probably included a change in leadership, which prompted his hiring.

    You can only vary the shape and style of guitars to the limits of
    making then desirable and comfortable to play.

    Hi Phil. New subscriber here. NOT a guitar expert. Just a comment on your "less than $750 guitar" question. I bought a new Epiphone es339 Pro about 3 weeks ago. In general, a great guitar. Love the tone. Fit and finish were really good. Setup was so-so (bridge too high, stop bar too low for my liking). Strings (10's) felt like absolute CRAP! Pickups seem really strong. For $499, I don't see how someone can go wrong (IMO). Like your videos. Cheers.

    @philmcknight you were talking friday about a check list for reviewing guitars and I thought of something to consider adding. From my point of view when I'm looking for a new guitar (reading magazine reviews etc) I always look to see if the guitar is available left handed. I appreciate as a right handed player yourself it's not an issue. Being a leftie I watch/read a review check out specs and find out the guitar isn't made LH. It doesn't matter a lot of the time but if I'm in the market for brand new guitar a review that says available LH I'm probably more inclined to read/watch as it's something I might possibly consider if the guitar was right for me.
    Thanks for the content and entertainment,
    Gary

    I always felt the same way about PRS, Suhr and other high-end fine-tuned guitars being lifeless. I think it might be about how refined and perfect they are out of the box. Most of the time if you order a new PRS at any price point it is ready to go and probably in tune. They just become more perfect the more you spend. I love PRS, Suhr and many others, they are like the Ferrari of guitars and play like a dream. Now… If you order a new Fender you will need to change the strings and make some/many adjustments. You may even get one with a defect and have to exchange it. Then you need to break it in with how you play and put your DNA into it. You even need to do this with a custom shop to some level. If you’re lucky enough to find a Gibson that is not defective is some way it takes even more work to break it in. I can understand why people want to hold on the good ones and is probably why the Strat is what I prefer. Kidding, I am just use to the longer scale length and playing position of the Strat and the like.
    Carlos Santana: Hold my beer, picks up a PRS.. Sorry everyone but I put way to much thought into this not to post it and in my defense Santana could put soul into a Glarry.
    This is just my slightly exaggerated opinion. I am trying not to offend anyone just try to add to the conversion.

    57 pickups can sure get muddy. Yes PRS are brittle, harsh, sterile, characterless souding guitars, but they are quality built, beautiful, and have great note definition. If you are a fast shredder they are great for that.

      Exactly my impression. I use the word character instead of life or soul. A guitar has or doesn’t have character. I prefer character. It’s just that, a preference. I just never seem to be compelled to play a PRS. Give a nice Tele or ES335 and i can’t stop playing.

    On the subject of the nut slots. I was using the press down on 3rd fret but also I was under the impression the slot is adjusted properly if the note you play is accurate while connected with a tuner. {hold down 3rd fret low E and get a well pronounced G} I have been doing that for my guitars and it works but at first I made my share of mistakes and ruined some graph tech nuts. Open chords always sound beautiful now on all 23 guitars.

    With the Katana MKII review you can do a peddle through the amp and you have an option of using the "AMP in" connection on the back as well and use your own pre or modeler board. Turns the Katana into a frfr style speaker. Katana MKII is very versatile in that way.

    I bought a Katana Mk2 as my first guitar amp a few months ago. As a beginner player I was really surprised to find out that a physical pedal seems to have a lot less noise then the Katana internal effects. E.g. I bought a cheap Joyo Vintage Overdrive and it has a lot less noise then the BOSS Blues Driver in the Katana.
    Also, I don't think you can get compressor in to overdrive with the Katana internal effects. You need a compressor pedal to get it to the beginnging of your effects chain.
    So, I think using pedals with a Katana can be a lot better then just using the internal effects.

    As far as do pickups put should in guitars. Yes, yes they do. So I have 5 high end PRS, I have a PRS mcarty SC 10 top with their P90s. Such a beautiful guitar so much soul. I have a Artist V and this is the most beautiful sounding guitar ever to have been created with the Artist V pickups in clean to mid distortion range. Then I have 3 custom 24,. One is Floyd one is a piezo and one is the bolt on neck version. All 3 of the custom 24 were soulless and lifeless to play. Swapping pickups brought them to life.
    Same for ibanez. I have a cheaper 7 string. Love it, sorry don't remember model. However I also have a j custom and it arrived soulless and lifeless. Again changed pickups to the new petrucci pickups, rainmaker and Dreamweaver I think they are called. it became my favorite go to guitar.
    So yes in my opinion new pickups can breathe life into a soulless guitar.

  • @jleighwolfe
    @jleighwolfe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lifeless guitar has no sustain or presence. And no character. It's a combination of factors. Wood. Frets. Pickups. You can tell when its just one component. A lifeless guitar is several components that just don't work together.
    I feel like when people say that though, they all mean different things. Because every guitar player has their own "vibe" that they look for. PRS is absolutely not lifeless to me, but i can see how someone who prefers a les paul (i love les pauls) would say they sound that way.

    I have 57classic/57+ pickups in my Gibson Les Paul studio. I love these pickups! Great distortion tone, but not too much to put them over the top. It's exactly the sound l hear in my head. Maybe l just got lucky and got a good set in this guitar, or maybe it is just preference, but they are perfect for my ear....Also, l use 9-46 hybrid strings on my Fender Pro Strat, and they give me a much better fell, and l get a 'meatier' sound on the bass and middle tones, but l can bend the heck out of the high strings for blues.

    PRS and Satriani definitely have no soul. Only technique and tackiness. Just my opinion, but I'm glad others share it.

    Objects don't have souls. Songs don't either. But we like to say they do, because it feels like we are validating our passion we feel with certain things. If items and songs had a souls of their own, shouldn't there be no argument about which ones do and don't have soul?
    I feel like people just call PRS soulless and artist they don't like soulless because these things don't inspire them, and rather than just acknowledging that, they feel the need to solidify their taste as 'objectively' better. Like they are more connected to some higher thing than other people.
    You can love what stirs your soul while simultaneously not shitting on what stirs someone else's soul. It is possible. But that would mean you would have to acknowledge your ego, and who wants to do that right?😂

      "Soul" isn't literal. In this case it's a synonym for "character". A Les Paul guitar is not hot, but it can produce "warm" tones. PRS guitars have no character, they have a neutral, boring tone.

      @@wrongfuture some people actually use it in a literal sense. Whether you mean it literally or not it's still you making an 'objective' statement about a 'subjective' opinion. I'd argue PRS has plenty of character, and you would have no way of convincing me otherwise, and if you don't feel like PRS has character, then I can't change your mind either. That's my entire point. You take something that you don't find inspiring, and whether you intentionally do it or not you label it as sterile or lacking in character, as if that's a fact rather than an opinion.

    For humbucker pickups gotta try 3rd Power MagFrags. I have those in a LP (among other guitars) and there is nothing like them. Have to hear them to believe it.

    "PRS/Ibanez has no soul" is usually super duper Fender or Gibson guy who is defensive that his object of personal validation is in question. It's basically them worried that they don't have soul. Classic case of projection.

    Gibson is just a bunch of bullies in my opinion, they don't care about guitar players anymore just their ego and their wallets. If you really want to own a Gibson, do the world a favor and just buy it used from someone. Keep the older great Gibsons circulated and don't let them take your hard earned money when they are clearly spending it more on bullying others rather than improving their brand.

    Soul or not, the Chinese people who make these rip-offs are criminal, and the people who buy them are suspects. Just my opinion.
