Today Schony747 takes one last nostalgic ride on the V/Line Melbourne to Albury Passenger Train. The N Class Locomotive hauled service is due to be replaced to the newer Bombardier Vlocity DMUs which will apparently quicken up the journey time by nearly half an hour.
This video takes you for a ride on the locomotive hauled train and takes you through many of the features associated with the steel bodied N type cars which were built in the early 1980s. A walk through the whole consist, the snack bar, the first class seat and even one of the toilets. It's all recorded here. Some of the shunting movements and run around at Albury which is currently required with the locomotive hauled train is also recorded as well.
Come for one last ride on The N Set to Albury. Have a great week - Brenden S

Great Video!
Thankyou mate
Schony747 video actually. Here's the link to the full video and you can see the extended door activity St 09:13 time stamp.
Howdy from Benalla, great little send off mate. Gunna miss the Locos coming thru town. I caught the train to Melbourne from Wodonga a lot as a kid, still remember the old click-clack of the track as we sat in cabins along one side of the car. 👍
Thanks for having a look. We will all miss the look and comfort of these cars.
End of an era. Those comfy seats and the buffet car will be missed by everybody
Yep still my favourite and most comfortable train with V/Line.
nice sharing my friend 👍🏻😁
Thanks for looking
I miss having locomotive hauled carriages for the Ballarat line, honestly. Vlocities are nice but they're so loud when you're inside them especially during acceleration.
Yeah I miss the good old days when diesels ran the ballarat line
@@matthewmassarotti2596 the velocity are diesel powered
@@WarbossSkolCraka he means locomotives, “diesels” are another name for them.
That was many years ago now. I even remember as a kid riding the VR blue and gold from Ballarat
@@Schony747 29 years or so ago now as Ballarat was the first line to run Sprinters but ran New Deal-era equipment beforehand.
The gardens at Avenel station are always immaculate
It's a very well maintained station overall. I think it's undertaken by volunteers as well
sad to see it go but that's progress
Some call it progress. Others will disagree. Either way the cars are close to 40 years old.
@@Schony747 yeah
I always meant to take a ride from Albury to Melb. on this. Too late she cried! Thanks Schony. Cheers from Wagga.
Well you can do Shepparton to Melbourne before it's too late
Thank you. I like the swivel first class seats. Also the view of the rear of the locomotive from the passenger car while travelling.
My favourite photo was in Yarra car with the K class tender first, so the funnel end was visible from the lounge through the big window.
It's one thing I forgot to video was the back view leaving Albury Station. Probably too busy enjoying the first class seat
Top video!
Thankyou mate
A couple of winters back ( 2019), while on holiday in Melbourne, I travelled on the V-line train up to Castlemaine, to ride on the goldfield railway. The "City of Castlemaine" was the engine that pulled our V-line carriages that day, from Southern Cross.
It was a good, comfy ride.
The N cars are always very Comfortable and I reckion the best ride. N460 is currently on the standard gauge running between Melbourne and Albury
The newest seats on the Vlocities feel like concrete slabs, eek, sitting on them for five hours is gonna suck lmao
Haven't been on the new ones but others have told me the same thing.
A comprehensive review. I admired your 'crab-walk' at Albury. Very smooth. I guess these Ns will be regauged back.
I assume so. Come Thursday there will only be one available for SG and I suppose that will be for emergencies when there is a shortage of Vlos.
Awesome video. As a semi regular user of the Albury line trains I will most definitely miss the N class. Especially the comfortable seats and curtains!
I think everyone will miss these. Definitely still the most comfortable ride with V/Line in my opinion
@@Schony747 Yeah fair call in saying everyone will miss them for several reasons including the comfort factor. I also rode on the 5:20pm Albury to SC service tonight as well. That was an N Class set and it was hauled by N474 (City of Traralgon).
@@Schony747 I also agree they are the most comfortable ride.
i am disappointed to see all these comments about how the newer product is considered inferior to the older ones. my own preference was for the really older ones with separate compartments but surely a modern manufacturer should be easily able produce a far better product for modern commuters. in fact, if they are not smoother and quieter they are a failure. what is the general opinion of the nsw interstate trains? of course they are about the same age as these n cars
@@vsvnrg3263 To be fair, I don’t consider the new VLocity to be inferior. Literally the only things I don’t like is the seats get uncomfortable after a while and there is no curtains on the windows.
Yeah the ride is most definitely smoother and quicker. As for trains in NSW I like the XPT because it feels cosy. I didn’t mind the Series 1 Waratahs that I went on when I was 17 either.
heh, on 21 July I went to Swan Hill, the loco was N469. Not sure if they plan to run Vlocities to Swan Hill. I think they want to withdraw all loco hauled trains.
Swan Hill will probably be one of the last to convert I'm assuming because of all the unprotected crossings
12:30 If those seats are "blue" then perhaps they need cheering up! LOL
I was waiting for that and you delivered 😀😀
@@Schony747 Ba-dum-tsssssss!😁😁😁

@@Mediawatcher2023 *Missed me!* Ha-ha-ha!
@@neilforbes416 but on a serious side this be an end of an era for this train since it was introduced in 1983
Looks like the xpt was running late as usual.
Late again
30:00 the door opens
And power Operating mechanism to close it.
Oh
9:23 the door closes and 30:26
Yep power operated by the Connie
Connie huh?
Super Video 👍🏻
Thankyou mate
awesome
Thanks man
Great tour and insight Brenden, surprised how clean the crapper was in Economy class, maybe early into the journey eh? I presume each carriage has CCTV and hence no graffiti and scratched windows like our intercity V sets in NSW. Nice clean and tidy outfit, including the loco, snack bar prices a tad high, like NSW, not much change out of $10 for a pie and can of fizzy water.
N class carriages surprisingly have no CCTV considering it is 2022.
The cars are still very clean on the inside for something that's creeping up to 40 years. Still the most comfortable ride as well
6:58 Do you get to "see more at Seymour?" LOL
@Neil Forbes not much
There's a couple of nice pubs
@Neil Forbes seymour is only an hour and a half out of melbourne due to the population growth down there it would become a suburb one day
@@Mediawatcher2023 More likely a city in its own right.
@@neilforbes416 not big enough to be a city the town relies on radio and television but can pick up radio stations from bendigo
Title is misleading.I was thinking of a steam locomotive. I went on this diesel hauled train from Albury to Spencer street in 2012.
A locomotive is a locomotive. It would be great to see R766 make an appearance now it's on the SG
Well, Brendan, I suppose you had a "crazy reason" to take this ride. A "loco motive!" LOL
@Neil forbes end of era after thirty years of service
Crazy enough to buy food from the snack bar Neil 😀😀
@@Schony747 it was handy to get food from the snack bar on the train i wonder if the new vlocities would have them installed
@@Schony747 😁😁😁
@Neil Forbes the new vlocities started on Monday so the old trains are retiring been in service since 1983
Great video man. But what happens to the standard gauge N classes now?
Hopefully sent to a railway preservation society and not Sims Metal. 🤞🤞🤞
Probably converted back to BG as the locos are still required by V/Line and a Victrack asset. I would assume there would be one standby SG loco hauled set in the short term while the bugs in the new roster is sorted out.
@@Schony747 o thanks nice to know they won’t be scrapped
@@Schony747 That’s good to hear. I was worried they’d be due for scrapping like the Comengs.
Do you know exactly when the N class will be retired from the Albury line?
Based on FB group reports, this Saturday 30th August
Oh wow that's closer than I thought. So I'm guessing they've got more standard gauge Vlocities then? I remember seeing when the first one debuted in revenue service late last year, I'm guessing they've now got 2 or 3 more ready to go for all daily services?
@@Schony747 Do you definitely mean August 30 or this Saturday July 30?
I like the the high vilolocity trains are much better and quicker
Quicker but many people still prefer the comfort of a proper train carriage
Hopefully the velocities get replaced by electric multiple units in the future which are better for the environment
That would mean full electrification and that's unlikely on lines like this. Hydrogen could be an option though
Does this mean vlocitys will take over?
On the Albury line yes and eventually all long distance train services to Bairnsdale, Shepparton, Swan Hill and Warrnambool
Undoubtedly not the last lol
Probably not the last but certainly the last scheduled or rostered from a planning point of view
@10:37 vacuum toilets
Yes. New technology back then.
now only noisey vlocities
Especially on departure. It is what it is but I still think the N cars are still the most comfortable ride still around.
