To answer some of your questions in the beginning; she has a mixed Japanese/Korean heritage, and being mixed race is its own challenge (I'm white/black) even without the hard cultural beauty standards. People are more open minded now and can take interesting and different features for what they are, uniqueness, but not everyone. And unfortunately the judgmental, or angry tend to be the loudest.
Whoever said that Japanese pronounce "i" like you would in "in" or "it" is incorrect. They are correct that it "i" is not pronounced as "eye", however, "i" in Japanese is pronounced with an "ee" sound like "me". The "ee" sound is much less prominent when combined with "a" in front of it ("ai"), which sounds more like "eye" when pronounced. The "ee" sound is even more prominent or a longer "ee" sound when combined with another "i" such as "ii" in "oishii"

That and their beauty standards expect all women to be like 90lbs or else they're "fat." Things are changing a little but they still have a long ways to go.
