Superb - it runs. That is a lot of hard work, right there, to get to this stage. Personally I'd take the chance on a 2nd hand starter. Typically, these models don't suffer a lot from starter failure (unlike starter clutch failure, which is well documented) and they only operate for a very short time...
Great deduction skills! Holy cow, I've never seen anything like it and I suspect it was a combination of the original crash and the sitting outside. I'd buy a used starter off another VFR.
I will double check the starter clutch before I button everythong back up and make sure its functioning proper. I don't want to keep buying starters! :)
I've been waiting on this vid for a long time, and learned so much from you as I gather parts for my own "crashed no-hope VFR800" project. Congrats on the First Start!
17 minutes into today's video brought a smile to my face. Good on you Jason......well done! Tearing an engine down and then getting to hear it fire back up is great joy! Way to go Brother! The starter was beyond anything I've ever seen in fifty plus years of wrenching. I'm sure you'll figure the best solution. Great video. I'd go with aftermarket starter, but be sure to check that all bolts and nuts are screwed down tightly or at torque spec.
Thank you! It is great to finally have it running :) I suspect there may be an issue with the starter clutch and will check that next to make sure it is functioning properly.
Opening the starter was a classic meme shot.

I am afraid that the starter clutch may be an issue - I will be checking that next
