Thiess celebrates moving 10 million banked cubic metres semi-autonomously at Lake Vermont

- We recently achieved the major milestone of safely moving more than 10 million banked cubic metres semi-autonomously since launching our fleet of six Cat® D11 dozers with the semi-autonomous tractor system (SATS) three years ago at Lake Vermont mine in Queensland.
That's with 5 large dozers, right? Color me, not impressed. I used to push out 1,000,000 yards a year by myself at Fresh Kills Landfill (after it closed). That's pushed out and graded to spec, according to height stakes/toe stakes in 5-10 foot lifts with compound grades (to facilitate water drainage) with the surveyors and engineers checking every few day to make sure it's perfect. At any time, you could drive a car or truck across my work area and not worry about windrows. I used a D9R in good weather and D6 LGP in the rain. 240-20 yard trucks a day, everyday. That is how is how I ended my career (void fill in before final capping). But, when I returned to FK (after being layed off, after 911) There were two of us in D9's pushing off 20 foot banks with a half mile of truck (10 wheel and 18 wheel) waiting to dump. However, after a few years of this, the engineers decided that 20 foot lifts were not stable enough, and reduced the lift size as well as limiting the number and size of trucks. Also, working rain or shine I had to build access roads for the trucks to get to where we needed them. Are you building any roads remotely? Remote dozers worked out for you. But, IMHO they are not versitle enough for general work. Nothing can replace a good operator, in the seat, and the sensors, which are his hands, feet, ears, eyes, and butt. When I retired, they closed the operation (With 3 Operators still on the job.) and turned it over to Tully Construction for final capping. I got a little party and a Model of a D8.
