I'm an avid flyfisherman and was attracted to this game immediately. The theme and mechanics in this game are great; yes the game actions may be repetitive but so is fishing. The art is beautiful, component quality (deluxe version) is awesome, and the game length is quick as it does not take long to catch seven fish. I rate this game a 9; I think I'll be fishing again soon.
Like games such as Brew Crafters (about making beer), this definitely looks like a game that caters excellently to people who connect with the theme. I don’t even like fishing but I can see how someone who likes fishing would love this game. :)
I think a strong point of having the fish on the line is what dice you take for which spot you land on. You can combo in finesse, or momentum tokens. The options come from putting together the combos to reel the fish in efficiently.
I recently got my dad into board games and now that he's retired, he's going even heavier into games. He even likes solo gaming. And he's been fly fishing my entire life so this seems like it'd be right up his alley if only for the theme alone.
It mimics fly fishing almost exactly. Part of the strategy is changing out the flies to match the disc colors that you will need in the rows to get the bonuses. I think it is fun but it is a bit repetitive.
The game has lots of fun combos with the momentum and finesse bonus actions. They can chain combo if planned well. The game is mostly about these combos and the set collection. Keeping track of community scoring and personal scoring.
I really enjoyed this game! Haven't played it enough yet for the repetitive nature of the fishing to get to me. Hoping for an expansion to spice things up though!
It's so thematic that it has the same draw/drawback as fishing. You can find the "wash rinse repeat" game loop either boring or relaxing depending on your tastes, same as with fishing. I'm not a big fisher myself but i do find it relaxing, I gotta try this game sometime to put what i'm saying in this comment to the test.
I’m an AVID fisherman. And I kickstarted this immediately. With that said, I agree; it is samey. It’s dripping with fly fishing theme. So I house ruled the number of fish needed to trigger end game. We went to 5. I’m sure there’s a reason why that won’t work, but it works for us.
I'm sure that's fine. I haven't played the game but I imagine that the only downside is that it could make certain strategies and fish sizes too powerful. But if your group isn't playing that competitively, it might not ever matter.
Again, bang on review. I have the KS version, and while the production and concept are great, the game does get repetitive. It's a solid game, and I don't know what they'd really do different, but I agree that I wanted some extra punch from this one. I'll probably keep it around for now, but it needed a little more strategy and some extra variance.
I love that there is some cool unique themes coming out lately.... Even if the game doesnt hold up, I can at least appreciate that! Id pick this up maybe on a good deal.
"Fishnames are in german" - first fishname: steelhead lol Great review. I tried this game in Essen last year and really liked it but I also like fishing. Didnt pick this game up yet but I never forgot it :D
Talk about nailing the theme! “I don’t like this fishing game because it’s repetitive...” ...like real fishing!! Lol - I see why I might not like this game, OR real fishing!! It does look like a neat concept. I’d play it once - about as many times as I’ve fished in my life!
mark crawford honest question: in fly fishing would you let the line “drift” like the mechanism in this game? That doesn’t seem appropriate to the theme. I know nothing about fishing though I could easily be wrong.
@@ViperaRaddei absolutely! By drifting your fly, it mimics a bug or some food source moving through the current. It's especially exciting when you have a fly drifting on the surface and the fish jumps for it!

Same here it looks like I may pick this one up.
My girlfriend found this brand new at goodwill for $3.99. Pretty excited to play this.

So, much like fishing, this is something that can be improved by drinking?

I can't believe this game doesn't even have a "Seal of..." from Tom! Watching how to play, I honestly thought it was gonna be a great game!

Well, from a thematic point of view, fishing is a fairly repetitive endeavor.

When I am not sure, in gaming and in life, I always ask myself “ What would Tom Vasel do ? “
Are you by chance colorblind? It was green, but you kept saying blue.
Great review, as alwas! I would like to know your opinion about Coldwater crown 🙂
I feel the " rinse & repeat" with Le Havre when I played it, yet that is Tom's favorite game hahha
How do you pronounce lure? "ler" or "loo-er" ?
Loo-er
It must be his Floridian accent.
I really like the look of this, any other games that nail the fishing theme with perhaps more varied mechanics?

Thank you.
Does it work SOLO or is it just more repetition?
I'd like to know the answer to that question as well.
I feel like it is a fun solo game.
The solo game is fantastic.
Tom, I hate to sound picky, but it is called fly fishing for a reason. They are not called lures, they are flies.
