    So Kenshin's weapon, while effective, is less effective at killing than a standard katana.
    Isn't that the point?

    • @tycepickett1238
      @tycepickett1238 4 ปีที่แล้ว +682

      lol I kept thinking that the entire vid, Kenshins sword is not designed to have some sort of special technique that makes it really effective and better than a standard katana, as you say the entire point of him using such a sword is because he doesn't want to kill people anymore and this type of sword makes killing blows much harder to easily pull off, that's the entire bloody point of him using such a weapon.

    • @daishomaru7682
      @daishomaru7682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +333

      It is, in fact Kenshin's master points out that the sakaboto is not an effective sword for the hiten mitsurugi because the dull side actually makes the blade heavier.

      @@daishomaru7682 I can see that, maybe not as heavy but it would definitely create drag on the blade like swinging a hammer. It would require more effort to swing as fast as a normal katana since less aerodynamics.

      @crookeddesk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      Actually the point he reached at the end of the video was that for a master like Kenshin, an inverse curve has more advantages than it does detrimental properties, so it's actually better at cutting than a regular katana...

    The reverse blade represents kenshin's vow to never kill again. It's made clear in the series that swords, sword martial arts, and swordsman are considered to be purely for killing.
    The reverse blade is symbolic about inverting that dogma, symbolic about kenshin's vow to use his sword skills to save and protect instead of maim and kill.
    And it is feasible that kenshin is so skilled at his techniques, and has such control that his strikes are exactly enough to deal with threats with the minimum chance of death. He is considered one of the most skilled swordsman of all time during the show, after all.

  • @darklordofsword
    @darklordofsword 4 ปีที่แล้ว +390

    The sad thing is, at the speeds Kenshin is supposedly moving and attacking at, there's basically no difference between the edge and spine of the blade. A centimeter thick, meter-long steel bar going that fast is going to smash bone like it was nothing.

    You highlighted an interesting difference between eastern and western mythology. While there are legendary swords in eastern cultures, usually the effectiveness of the sword is a result of the wielder: ie. "The swordsman is so skilled, they could cut into solid stone, or decapitate several enemies in a single strike."
    Whereas in western cultures the swords are imbued with either a magical or divine power, and allow for superhuman skills. Its just an interesting cultural distinction that I hadn't really thought of until you alluded to it in the video.

    • @Mr.Nichan
      @Mr.Nichan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are the legends of Masamune, though. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masamune Also, superhuman fighters, just without connection to swords, definitely feature in European mythology, Greek and Irish at least.
      I do notice that Chinese and Japanese stories often have fighters' superpowers explained as just training, whereas they tend to need explanation in American superhero stories, and Hercules and Achilles from Greek mythology, for example, also have some supernatural explanations. I wonder if maybe the influences of Daoism and Buddhism might be behind the success of this sort of mind-over-matter, training can do literally anything, mentality. However, it's certainly not unheard of in Chinese and Japanese mythology and old* and modern fantasy, to have gods, demigods, or other supernatural explanations for superhuman abilities (certainly supernatural or sci-fi explanations for fighting ability occur in MODERN Japanese fiction, and totally magical beings like Yōkai, Kentaro, or the Monkey King occur in older stories, and), and I think characters who superhuman strength is unexplained may occur in western mythology, too, like maybe in that Irish story I was thinking about or maybe in fairy tales (not that I can think of an example of a fairy tale like this).
      *Some fantasy is centuries old. Journey to the West (published c. 1592, China) is fantasy, as is A Midsummer Night's Dream (premiered 1605, England).

    It is the idea of the reversed blade sword that makes the difference in the beginning Kenshi isn't a crazy killing machine that goes around killing people for the fun of it, he kills to bring about the end of the Shogunite era so that there will be a everlasting peace for Japan. So once his mission was completed, he began using the reversed blade sword as a symbol of his commitment to not kill again, there go he is reversing his way of life. So it's not that the reversed blade sword can't kill. It is that Kenshi is trying to reverse all the bad things he did to put a end to the Shoguns by protecting life not killing it. A reversed blade for a reversed life......

    The whole point of reverse edge, (in the story) is all the fast & powerful attacks with the katana’s natural curve, will result in blunt edge hitting.
    Can you turn the blade 180 and still kill? Sure.
    But that would require an intentional effort to change the grip, after drawing the katana.

    One of the things that's complicated about Kenshin's past is that a lot of his killing wasn't really during a war: They were assassinations. The Bakumatsu is the name for the long period of instability from 1853-1867, and contained a few small wars, but the big one was the 1868-1869 Boshin War that overthrew the shogunate and put the emperor in power. Kenshin's really supposed to have been an Ishin Shishi assassin before the war, which is when the OVA is set, although I believe he did also fight in the war before he stopped killing, so I guess it is likely that he actually killed more people then. I'm not really sure when the OVA was set, but I'm pretty sure it was before 20 August 1864, which is when Kyoto was set on fire as a result of the Kinmon incident, and I rather suspect that it was during the 1860s, since that seems to be about when Kawasaki Gensai became involved in assassinations, so ~1860-1864, well before the main war, although there do seem to some battles (oddly enough including naval battles against the U.S. while it was in the midst of its own civil war), and the Mito Rebellion started in May of 1864.

    • @MiguelMedV
      @MiguelMedV ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean Kawakami Gensai, the real manslayer that Kenshin was based on. And yes, he was an assassin and then fought in the Boshin War, his bow to never kill again came after he left his manslayer sword at the end of the Battle of Toba Fushimi, once the imperials won the war 😁👍🏼🎌...

He dared kenshin to live as a swordsman using only the sakabatou to realize that his pacifist way of life was a well intentioned joke.
