Shadiversity More variety means more bad swords as well. Variety equaling better is a logical fallacy. Besides that,we live in an age of advancement. we can make any sword far better than it usually was, so evolution continues.
Shad says that to be able to choose between a sword catagory with a bigger variety is better than to choose in a narrower one adding furthermore that it's so only if the broader options of the first category cover all the vantages of the second one. That is true and not at all a fallacy. Otherwise your argument is fallacious, your error is called hasty generalization, a katana is on average better than a longsword therefore katanas are better than longswords. To note that the error did not depend on the subject, if you assert that to choose in a vaster variety is bad you're fallacious and wrong. P.S. English is not my first language so be mercifull...
valdo aluppi 1. Usually the samurai,as opposed to ashigaru and such, had their swords either forged to their specifications or they bought a quality they could afford. "Think shooters preference" for a nowaday comparison...especially because samurai kived lives in the early days of guns and used them, but I digress. 2. I assert based on the advantages in cut control that a katana is superior as a cut is more lethal than a slash, with alot more twrget area to perform a stopping blow than a thrust, particularly a weaker one requiring huge accuracy like a rapier. 3. Long swords had more variety because the eras affected the type of fighting and armor they would deal with. One period could be worse against the medium to heavy armor of the samurai than another. Variety DOES NOT equate to superiority. The US has the highest diversity rates of any developed country, yet our poverty rates and crime are far worse than Japan's and Swedens for example. They are far more homogeneous, so where is the benefit in careless immigration now? Where is affirmative action working when men are now disenfranchised with college attendance versus women? So it is easier to get the longsword you specifically want on the open market, big deal. If u have the money, u get it CUSTOM MADE IRREGARDLESS! ;) Both Samurai and Knights did this. 4.Directional stability is part of evolution. Why do most women seem to prefer about average penis sizes? (5.16×4.6 inches) directional stabilization. I can have a 1000x different LS and only 100x katana, but for me i would prefer more katanas than longswords based on its geometric design and aerodynamics. It is faster and more control at the cost of range. Different specialties granted, but i don't need variety, I need FUNCTION. :)
Did... did you not hear the ending remarks? There is no "average longsword!" There is so much variation in designs that you cannot average them to one design. "Longsword" means cutting, thrusting, control, and length all at the same time, just not in the same blade. The katana is a blade made from tradition. The variations of katanas are able to be averaged because tradition has always pushed just one aspect of the blade, cutting. The contrast with longswords with different geometries and roles, and tradition being less important than improvement, shows how were not even comparing truly similar things. It's like saying "what is the average Ford vs. the average tuner?" Ford is a brand with many variations of vehicles for different roles. Tuners are street race cars designed around being really good for the street exclusively. You can average tuners, they all do the same thing. Fords fill so many roles, you can't average a town car and pickup truck to get a suv, they are all different. The word "longsword" refers to many blade types, "katana" is just one type of blade.
Weapons in different regions of the world are very specialized for their own environments. There's a reason Europe liked longswords and there's a reason Japan used katanas.
Well, a proper knight (15th century) with plate armour and chain mail will have probably the advantage, because he (and his sword) is used to deal with armored opponents. While the katana already alone (made for cutting) will have big problems to deal with such protection.
@@Xarx42 against steel armour. I think the advantage goes heavily to the sword. There are multiple techniques that can be applied using the sword to get through armour that you simply cannot do with a katana.
Katana's tend to be good at slicing and cutting. Longswords tend to be good at slicing, cutting, stabbing, chopping, pomelling, starting a crusade, subjugating heathens, being used as a starter weapon in rpgs, and starting internet debates.
The Witcher is the only game thats made me feel like longswords are fast and lethal and compete with katanas. Japanese fantasy tends to make katanas look like the ultimate weapon against everything whereas longswords are made out to look like blunt clunky starter weapons.
Pop culture isn’t reality people can’t seem to understand not only is the long sword technological superior its made with better materials especially the late age medieval steel swords that cut through everything
I've handled both katanas and type 14s (European longsword). Both blades are equally sharp, but Katanas do cut better for 2 simple reasons: 1. Blade geometry. European swords have a tapered edge with a thick center, which creates resistance. Cloth armor can stop a cut from one. Katana blades are thicker and transition smoothly into the edge, combined with the curve. This allows for all the cutting power to be concentrated in smaller surface area. It will eat cloth armor. 2. Edge alignment. European swords require more training to wield effectively. Because of the handle and aforementioned blade geometry, a newbie will have an easier time making a straight cut with a katana. Like bowling with guard rails. Katanas aren't indestructible and they aren't "the best" sword, but their cutting power got its reputation for good reason, especially considering that the Japanese had inferior steel and managed to get that kind of quality out of it. At the end of the day, any sword will kill you. But katanas cut better for the same reason a cutlass has more cutting power than a rapier. Simple physics.
@@beckonerseven9517 let’s say the wielded is top class in both cases. The Kingsport would win in most cases because it is technically superior. Katana is great for slicing. The sword is good for so much more including slicing. There is a german 40 minute documentary I can show you. The sword wins quite easily
i think the biggest problem with the Longsword vs Katana debate is that we're comparing a sword from a small isolated island country to one that was exposed to all of Europe and then some
SlenpaiwasHere Katana, evolved from tachi, got less range and gained more control and durability for dueling and back up infantry weapon and horseback weapon. Good carry weapon for out and in doors. Fought chinese, koreans, mongols, Philippine pirates, and on occasion south east pirates. 1300s- present day. Always steel, never iron in origin. Even the mongolian invasions had chinese and koreans as a massive part. Chinese coped it a bit or developed a similar sword independently (teng dao). Koreans only survived on land due to chinese help in the invasions. Either way, the main used weapon that saw impact for both where above all spears and arrows.
SlenpaiwasHere that's a good point katana were mostly used against other people with katana. Whereas the longsword evolved from fighting all sorts of different weapons.
1. The Katana (Uchigatana-type Nihonto) was an evolution of the Tachi, to respond towards the changing nature of warfare - where heavy armor and close combat on foot was increasing. However, "Tachi" can simply mean as one of the terms for "Long sword" in Japanese. In fact, many Koryu schools often refer to the Katana as "Tachi". Other terms are used as well, such as "Daito" and "Odachi" - which also mean "Long sword". Not surprisingly, there was a lot of overlap among these swords historically. 2. And Tang dynasty style Dao swords were already around since before the 8th century. They predate Japanese swords. 3. While long-ranged weaponry (polearms, projectile weapons) had important roles in warfare, it often gives the false connotation the the sword was a "useless last resort weapon". In reality, swords evolved because they needed to; they were extensively used, just in different contexts. Skirmishes, as well as in tight melee situations (ex: after pike formations broke, raids in castles/forests, etc.). 4. The "Katana were mostly used against other people with Katana" argument is a bit misleading. One must remember that past swordsmen in East Asia, regardless of against military foes or bandits, had to defend themselves from one of most common, basic weapons of man - spears and polearms. In fact, most of the Chinese and Japanese swordsmanship material stem from the context of defending against polearms. Even the ones originating in the Edo era, such as Itto-ryu. In addition, the dueling culture throughout the Edo period allowed people to bring whatever weapon of choice they desired - not only the sword. So even if there weren't as many types of swords as there were in Renaissance era Europe, Japanese swordsmen in fact had it far worse. Katana vs. Kusarigama, Katana vs. Yari, or Dual swords vs. Naginata - and so on. While that in Western Europe seems to have been pretty uncommon. Most likely due to a different culture (concepts of chivalry & "equal ground", well-established sword laws for civilians, etc.), as well as modernized form of government with strong centralized power becoming prominent early on. Most of the HEMA treatises surviving today focusing on sword vs. sword reflects this.
I just love how in the clip of the guy chopping ice blocks the guy totally sandbags his technique when striking with the longsword, while he fully leverages his strike with the katana...
I also noticed that the variation of longsword he was using looked to be one of the ones shad pointed out as being strong in stabbing not necessarily in cutting.
True but there's a lot of technical things in each swords design as far as functionality goes the truth is u can't really compare them since they were made for completely different styles ie the curve for a quick draw weight for speed vs size for power and so on
That show was scripted to the last frame, and R. Lee Emery actually.groched about it before his death. In other words, the show showed the bias or ignorance of the script writer.
Well.. you can only use such a DEADLY move if it's a Pommel you can unscrew, if not then... well.. you can still win because Longsword beats Katana in every thing except the draw cut.
But when forged with anime and doused with dark weeaboo magicks, you can appraise your basic level 1 katana to a level 1 katana +, making it capable of splitting the universe in twain. Side effects may include speaking short mispronunciations of Japanese phrases, running with your hands behind your back, making hand signals, hearing AMV soundtracks at all time, and the inability to find a suitable mate, but if you have enough money you should be able to bypass this last effect. Remember, be safe, and ask your doctor if anime is right for _your_ katana.
so this is a nice video and all ... but you refused to acknowledge one simple fact that puts katanas above any other sword: if you release all of your chakras the katana allows you to cut through every longsword you can imagine. This is signified by a black aura around the katana and your eyes glowing red. The effect is strengthened by screaming at the top of your lungs.
Good point if your pummel is hollow. Thus has very little mass the effect of hitting your opponent with it would be significantly reduced. Thus lowering your chances to "end someone rightly".
Well, you CAN strike with a pommel. If you half-sword the weapon, IE grab it and use it by the blade, you can use the pommel as a really shitty mace or just general blunt instrument. If the pommel however has, say a spike or something, you can then stab with it in either a half-sword or regular holding position, although the latter being a hell of a lot more limited in practical use. And thats the wonderful thing about Long Swords. They have so much utility and alternate uses to them, depending on design.
"grab it and use it by the blade, you can use the pommel as a really shitty mace or just general blunt instrument." But that is not how you end your opponent rightly.
i love how much his channel grew as a result of the algorithm spike he got from hate-clicks on his katana videos. katana fan boys literally boosted this channel to the sky
@@chicken29843 Spear pros -Extra reach to keep enemies away -Cheap to produce -Easy to learn how to use -Better against a cavalry charge Spear cons -Heavy and unwieldy -Closer combat -Low resilience (due to damage in combat) -Less potential for mastery Sword pros -High potential mastery -Closer combat -Light and agile (provided it is a decently made blade) -Very high resilience -Versatile -Good control Sword cons -Very close combat -expensive -Hard to learn -Bad at stopping cavalry charges
The spear makes a very effective front line weapon, the sword tends to be better for charging and attacking. Heavy armor and shields work better against spears. Although swords cannot go through most heavy armors a good stroke to the side of the helm can result in concussions. I personally prefer using a sword over a spear, but in general a spear is a better weapon for an army to equip its soldiers with.
Not to mention, both sword styles evolved based on the armours and fighting styles of both cultures. They each have their own inherent advantages and disadvantages.
Japanese swords can be used effectively against sophisticated heavy armors if done correctly. There's little difference between certain types of XVIII & XIX swords and 16th century Koto era Katanas. I'm by no means the most knowledgeable in Japanese armored swordsmanship, but just saying.
with in ten feet and your weapon holstered your dead against a unarmed opponent, so says the police training manual. that person with a knife or a sword your dead that much faster and bloodier. the weapon does not win the fight the fighter wins the fight. And they win the fight before it even begins 9 times out of 10
Aden YANG How the hell would a cutting blade go through even chain mail? Let alone plate? Swords were the side arms of European Warriors and they are superior to fighting Armoured Knights than a Katana would be.
Cornered Fox full plate armour is fucking heavy. Chase a samurai around I. It for a while and you’ll be tearing that gear off as fast as you can before you die of heat exhaustion. Samurais are fast and they used spears glaives and pole arms. They’ll pierce armour or get through the gaps well enough from distance. And remember. The guys in full plate can only hobble or walk. You’d die if you tried to run in metal can. And the samurai used horses too
Play sekiro. The only knight you fight in the game you have to throw off a cliff because his armor prevents him from taking damage from a katana. He's literally one of the bosses. It's honestly a perfect example, and the fact the game was made in japan says a decent bit about the general consensus. It's just common sense a knight in plate armor would win with no skill or luck differences.
Oh yeah, it was weird seeing a medieval knight in medieval Japan and the fight quite makes sense because you can't inflict damage on him instead posture damage (defense damage of some sort) and then perform "deathblow" and kick him off the bridge.
Oskar Schweitz But with long swords you can halfsword and use them as a battle hammer using the crossguard, Katana is completely useless against anyone in any metallic type of armour and its really bad at thrusting due to it's curve while longswords still are superb at cutting and being much faster and agile. Euro swords are just superior
The main thing I have noticed between these two is the big difference in use. A longsword was a main weapon that someone would carry, rather than a back up. A katana was an auxiliary weapon or a purely self defense weapon. Not quite a war sword if you will. The longsword also has a higher emphasis is defense compared to a more balls to the walls approach
I honestly never thought of the different kinds of longsword when talking about this. Some really good points you made there shad, I couldn't agree more!
Yes, yes, YES!!! FINALLY SOMEONE GOT IT RIGHT!! You sir, are excellent! I've literally seen hundreds of videos comparing Longswords and Katanas, and finally, FINALLY, I've found someone who understands that katanas and Longswords are designed for different things!
The overall argument is if you had to pick either a katana or a longsword to fight someone with, which would you pick. The correct answer is longsword. While katana can do a couple things really well, those only tend to shine when you're fighting someone with another katana.
Nope the correct answer is You'd pick a Katana. Yes Longswords have some advantages IF you pick a specialized one. HOWEVER, Katana's do have one huge advantage over longswords in general, It's design. And by that i don't mean beauty or "better design". But it being a sword that is every little bit as good in cutting as it is in piercing, and it's curved designs allows it to penetrate armor more easily than a generalist kind of Longsword. Yes, you can use a rapier or Estoc to have better thrusting potential, but then you wouldn't have a Katana's cutting power, on the same note you could have a heavier longsword designed for superior cutting power, and it would have decent thrusting power as well, but being heavier it would also be slightly slower and it wouldn't be as accurate for thrusting as a Katana would be. Also For the bigger Longswords we have a Tachi, and Nodachi also had length variation , which may compete with a two-handed sword. Thing is, Weapons and equipment don't kill by themselves, you'd need a set of skills to fully utilize the features your weapon may have. Also, the Japanese knew very well about European armor. They even borrowed the designs of some of them to make a new kind of set of armor. So yeah they probably did you know you had to strike at the openings instead of trying to cut the armor.
Bloody, did you watch the video and hear what he said about the curved design of a Katana and how that advantage is very minute. Also adding a little more weight to a long sword isn't going to slow it down that much to make a huge difference in combat, the long sword also provides better defense and has a longer reach at relatively the same speed. I'f i were and experience swordsmen no way i choose a Katana. The Katana and long sword are made to fight different things, end of story but if they did clash the Long sword has the advantage in reach , versatility, and defense.
Basicly the things you want are reach which allows you to hit your opponent from farther away, and then you want balance which is why there is a pommel on a longsword and a lot of europian swords. Balance is good for being able to redirect the blade after either missing a target, getting the blade blocked, or inflicting a minor wound that wont kill the target immeadeatly which is what you want. Also sharpness is important, the definition of sharpness is having a smaller cutting edge or point, and this is important because a sharper blade will deal lasting cuts faster and easier than a dull blade, and a common misconseption is that a blade dulls with time, that is wrong, a blade dulls with use.
Just play Super Smash Bros. Mele where they made Roy's Sword of Seals, the longest sword in the game iirc, weak in the longer area for "balance." Marth's blade tip is most powerful. Link's sword is very nice with medium reach and medium strength. Nothing is more satisfying in the game than countering a super powerful attack with Roy. One time I went to a tournament with professional competitors, and I actually used Roy in my first and last time. I never won a single match but one time when I played agaisnt a pro Falco, I was on hanging on the edge of the arena, and decided to just go up normally since he probably expected me to jump or roll up. The character climbed up kind of slow, and then I countered. He did a forwards smash attack, and when he saw me counter, I noticed him reel in regret next to me in front of the TV. Falco's scream was agonizing. When the counter connected, the entire screen paused for a moment, and then Falco shout diagonally upwards with extreme speed, blasting off like team rocket in the background.
You can 2-hand the balder side sword and the blade is fairly long so I'm pretty sure its a longsword. Although I was referring more to DS2 in which the longsword is a fantastic weapon and even in DS3 the longsword is still a pretty good weapon especially compared to the katana's. I meant "Dark Souls" referring the whole series generally not specifically DS1, but I think its true for that one as well.
Erik Lanister The "longsword" (darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Longsword) Is one of the strongest "fast" weapons in the game if you have a 40/40 build (or 2H with a 27/40) and definitely out damages the swag sword (although it is shorter) and its counterpart in other souls games have indeed also been pretty strong, which one is strongest at meta level I dunno, possibly its Demon's Souls counterparts with the Crushing "infusion" and 50 Str.
In Dark Souls 1 the the Baldur Side Sword (which is a Side Sword) is a Dex weapon in the Longsword class. The generic Longsword (which is an arming sword) is a quality weapon. I wouldn't direct compare them since other then the BSS having a slightly better move set (stabbing power attacks) and a longer reach they're meant for two different builds. Not sure why you brought up 2 handing since you can two hand everything in the DS games In Dark Souls 3 (haven't played 2, probably won't bother, from what I'm seen it's a joke) ALL Longswords are Quality weapons. At +10 the Longsword has a C in str and a D in dex and does 220 damage. The Lothric Knight Sword +10 (same moveset as the BSS) has a C in both str&dex and a damage of 206. So it mirrors Bastard Sword vs Claymore, do you want slightly more damage per hit or better power attacks. The Katana weapons are all Dex weapons, so I'm not sure why you're trying to say the longsword is better then Chaos Blade when a Dex build isn't going to use a longsword because they aren't going over 16 strength (18 if they want to have a Sharp Washing pole as a backup). You might not like the Katana moveset (it does have limitations) but that doesn't make it a bad weapon as you're trying to make out.
Well, here I opened video, half expecting another d*ckslapping about "katana can cut through time&space" vs "katanas break if exposed to breeze" video (really surprised you picked such a topic) and I end up experiencing one of the most unique and explanatory "vs" video I've ever seen. Hats down, sir, and a round of applause.
Yeah, it seems to be a trend with everything. Majority of videos about this subject (and not only this) seem to follow the recipe of "kneejerk reaction to a kneejerk reaction to a kneejerk reaction etc" pattern. Emphasized by the fact there's no "entry requirement" for having a youtube channel. Personally, I think it's a faulty starting point in the first place, to expect that weapons in general, that are tried and used consistently - are bad.
As a japanese Im suprised to see some people have obession with this kind of comparison cuz literally nobody in my country cares about comparison between katanas and european swords. People don't need to be so insecure and desperate about weapons are not even used today, just saying.
It's just a historical discussion. It wouldn't even be that controversial except for a small group of white people who are obsessed with Japanese culture and do they say totally untrue things about western and Japanese swords. These videos are mostly just trying to answer those people.
on the user too, a group of assasins who stealthy killed an entire clan within a night? a number of footmen who are greatly armored and ready for huge war?
Katana is superior because single-edge is better than double edge. And curved is better than straight. Look at it this way, if you took your favorite long sword, whichever long sword you think is "best" you can ALWAYS make it even better by making it single-edge and giving it the katana curve.
SpaceRogue i mean depends on what bullets he's talking about, since blaster bolts judging by how long it takes for them to travel, are slower and harder to deflect, plus bullets don't deflect they will melt on contact. and since we aren't jedi and the only reason they are able to consistently deflect blaster bolts is due to the Force, a normal human won't be able to deflect bullets
There's no 'best' weapon, only the most appropriate one. Objectively, you can get more easily what fighting quality you are searching for with a specific longsword-design. But if you were living in feudal Japan and not only had to make do with inferior steel (compared to the best Europe had to offer at that time) but also deeply rooted traditions (tsuba instead of crossguard, blade shape) and regulations (max bladelength), the Katana was obviously the more appropriate choice compared to any longsword. That's why even when feudal japanese swordsmiths got their hands on an european sword, they didn't sell it as it is but used this superior steel to forge a Katana out of it to fit into the society they had as their customers.
But you can conclude which is better overall (if all scenarios could be taken into account). See my video refuting the Metatron on samurais VS Spaniards.
Blocking with a katana is meant more for the enemy's sword to slide off the blade, so you'll always have your hands higher, with your blade pointing down, so when used correctly your hands should never be in danger.
@@noahcandy5422 I don't how whether or not that is true, but regardless, when blocking, the sword isn't meant to absorb the brunt of the impact anyway, since the other sword will slide off
Not hard to keep your hands, just practice the niten ichi-ryū sword style and your good, ie: Miyamoto Musashi the greatest swordsman in all of Japanese history, who never lost a duel out 50+ duels and created this style
The reason why katanas were made with such complicated and difficult techniques had to do with the fact that Japan had really poor quality iron ore. This poor quality metal shattered if not folded a thousands times to spread the impurities out so that they would not cause the blade to crack. European swords were in general made with better quality ores that did not need such a time consuming process to create a usable weapon. European swords were designed to face European armor, which is superior to Japanese armor, in most ways. Let me put it this way, in European armor I would willing go against a dude wearing Japanese armor and armed with a katana, using nothing more than a roundel. And I am pretty certain I would win after taking a couple of strikes, which would do little except make a racket. The long-sword in the ice cutting video looked to be about as good at cutting as an estoc style long-sword (estoc longswords can't really cut as they can't be sharpened along the edge due to the flat rhomboid geometry, but are very stiff and excellent at stabbing.), except it was far to flexible to be an estoc.
Swords are not meant for cutting through metal. The katana is more likely to break itself than pierce through armor. Just like someone can be the greatest shot in the world but his bullet happens to hit a bulletproof vest. It is not skill, but physics that kills people.
TehKaiser .. Yea imagine having to develop a skill over years of training so you can defend yourself from a medieval madman with a sword perfectly. Then an idiot with a gun pulls a trigger a bunch of times and kills you. Yea you're right skill is dumb tbh
You parry lightsaber with sword and they cut right through your block, you parry sword with lightsaber and the top half of the sword hits you in the head and knocks you out, then they would get a free short sword in the process xd
Since I had trained with wooden katana, I had bias towards it for a while. But I have to give it to the sword. 1. Wide cross guard is single advantage that can be a deciding factor for most. 2. Double edge of sword gives more attack versatility. 3. Sword has much better poking ability. This advantage, also, makes the weapon useful against chainmail and plate armor. 4. Sword pummel enables more technique variety and is useful against armored targets. 5. Sword typically has longer range. 6. Katana's better cutting ability is an advantage against light leather/cloth armor, however, with sword you can just opt for poking techniques to offset the disadvantage. You can think of pretty much any scenario possible and sword will be able to perform as good or better.
Honest question, what are the benefits of pommels? Aren't they just a sort of ad-hock way you can knock people, if you happen to get close enough? I didn't think they necessarily mattered in most sword fights.
Search Half-swording. Essentially, the Pommel and cross-guard act as pressure points when the sword is leveraged from the blade end during close engagements. It's the only efficient way of dealing with a plate armored target when you only have a sword, as it allows the sword to be used similar to a war pick, war hammer, or mace and cause blunt trauma and denting to the opponent. Half-Swording also allows more nuanced and directed thrusts for gaps in the armor so that the blade end can avoid uselessly glancing off the metal exterior. Katanas cannot be used in a half-swording manner unless the curve of the blade is sufficiently reduced because the grip needs to be firm and uniform so as to avoid self-damage. Bare-handed half-swording is possible, and half-swording in combat would have the leather, mail, as well as other protective gearing between your hand and the blade. The leather, in particular, impacts this as it allows for a more stable grip on the metal.
It is a historical fact that the Western prosecutor defeated the Japanese samurai. Europe's war history is more intense and older than Japan's. Due to Japanese animation and cartoons, the Japanese sword was exaggerated and its image was brainwashed. Western swords are much stronger, more balanced, and can perform various swordsmanship.
Let us not forget that the only real documented confrontation between these two types of swords in history, was in the Philippines in the sixteenth century in a confrontation with the Wokou and the Spanish, and those pirates were totally humiliated despite having a numerical superiority.

Valravn Xiii Really it’s completely up to the user to upgrade. You can get away without upgrading given that you have good specs that can handle high graphics settings in most games. Obviously, you will come across many more unoptimised games on PC compared to console. But the argument about upgrading really doesn’t suffice for consoles in a sense that there are different generations of a console (such as the PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro). While one generation of a console may have negligible differences, the other may have tried to drastically change the hardware to improve performance in games or in games in 4K (which is now quite common despite them having to cut corners such as upscaling. Another is that there is a completely new generation of consoles released every 7 or so years (PS3 to PS4 to PS5). With a PC, that’s about the amount of time you can get away without needing an upgrade, again, provided that you have good specs to handle the games you play at a desired setting. With this new environment of even more powerful PC hardware coming out and even more competition in the market, both Intel and AMD (even Nvidia) are trying to release hardware that are extremely powerful for our needs, negating the need to upgrade often after each generation of CPUs/GPUs. I guess the main argument is the upgrading costs and the risk of upgrading such as ESD being a problem while being unlikely.
Tom Juraszek Anime & Hollywood makes swords in general overrated. I've watched a lot of medieval anime so yeaah the katana ain't the only sword bud. I guarantee people are only buying medieval swords because of watching game of thrones as well.
It did not start with anime only, it even can be sended back to the beginning of the 20th century, where people began to take an interest in eastern culture, especially Japan. After the Meiji restoration, when the katana has stopped from being used because of the interdiction for Samurai to wear it publicly and guns replacing melee, blacksmiths were beginning to create Katana not for samurai, but for exportation as Europe was taking a likeness in those weapons that seemed much more mastercrafted and beautiful than our own swords. So definitly if Anime might have a certain degree of maintainance in the myth that the katana is a really excellent weapon (which it is a bit, it's a very good sword but clearly not the godlike creation that completly outmatch our own swords), it's not something that appeared suddendly with anime, it can go much more far away than that.
It started way before after the end of Japan's isolation. European and American naval officers visiting Japan were amazed by the quality of japanese blades compared to their own cheap mass-produced (and by the time purely ceremonial) officer swords. Curiously after the reformations Japanese army armed their own officers with the similarly rubbish mass-produced katanas, and for the same reason - with rifles, machine-guns and artilley around the sword is purely ceremonial, so there's no point on spending money on making it good at anything but cool looks.
European swords should vary more, because Japan, a singular country, has fewer cultures than an entire continent. The same as Britain has less cultures than greater Asia. Not to mention the only country Japan ever had contact with was the Netherlands. More cultures, such as the Goths, the Saxons, the Scotts, the French, the Italians, the Poles, the proto Finnic tribes, the Jews, the Turks, the Romans, the Southern Slavs, the Northern Slavs, the Portuguese, the Trojans, the Spartans, Swiss mercenaries, the Austrians, the Hungarians, the Brettons, and the Nords just to name a few, and Japan has Japan and maybe sometimes Korea.
@@josephnebeker7976 he is implying that the Katana didn't really evolve much from that one particular design and purpose since they were mostly against the same group of enemies, using mostly the same gear. Unlike the longsword's case, it could be implied that the variety of the longsword stemmed from the armor and swordsmanship variety of the multiple nations warring against each other.
Well, since comparing disparate things is how the internet works, what's better? A knight with a maul made of cheese or a ninja with shuriken made of toenails?
Depends on how the toe-nails are kept together. Some kind of adhesive, such as super glue? Tied together with string? Are they weaved together? Also, what kind of cheese? Some cheese is much too soft, and some is much too crumbly. You need a structurally sound, dense kind of cheese. Then you'll need to add some context. Is it a duel? Are they buying groceries and racing to see who can fill their cart the fastest? What are they wearing? What are _you_ wearing...?
***** Hypothetical situation 1: You don't want to be naked, and you only get to wear either sabatons or kimono. (I'd pick kimono) Hypothetical 2: You're dancing, and you're prone to stepping on toes. (I'd pick kimono) Hypothetical 3: You want to have bare feet. (Kimono) Hypothetical 4: You really hate stubbing your toe on furniture because it really hurts. (Sabatons) So in conclusion, 75% of the time kimono is better. This is clearly an exception to your statement. I'd still go with the cheese-maul.
We all know katanas can cut through plate armour, a layer of mail and a layer of gambeson like a 1000 degree knife cut through butter. And longswords in general are blunt weapons, not bladed weapons. @@felipecosta-kv2fx Neither could the longsword cut through samurai armor. Your point? It depends on the wielder. A master of their craft will always find a way to kill. And they will only fail if the opponent is a better master. Aside from that, information is also a big factor. In any case, not a single sword, be it katana or longsword could ever cut a well-made armor. Unless you live in the anime world. Or cartoon. Or just fiction in general.

I practice Japanese swordsmanship and I will admit the katana has a lot of flaws. But I appreciate the video. This was very in-depth and practical. One thing I'd like to note-and I'm unsure if anyone else has mentioned it-but the tachi is a different weapon entirely than the nodachi and the katana, and not just due to length. The katana fits into your sash with the convex side up, more like a town-sword. The tachi was longer and had a saddle that a horseman would mount to his armor convex side down to use on horseback. Tachi were often more ornate than the katana and even predate the katana by a few hundred years. As horses were very expensive in feudal Japan, most samurai could not afford them and bugged bladesmiths for swords that were easier to use on foot. Thus the katana was born. On the other hand, nodachi means "field sword" and was basically a weapon used by warriors who didn't have horses against horse-riding warriors. Of course even then nodachi were mostly ceremonial. Spears and halberds (yari and naginata) were much more common and much less expensive. After all, the cost of one sword was said be able to equip one hundred spearmen.
Though if you mount a katana like a tachi it becomes a tachi and if you mount a tachi like a katana it becomes a katana, which quite frankly happened a lot in the Muromachi and Sengoku period. The main thing that differentiates the two swords is the mounting.
Thank you for commenting on my reply. That's not quite the case, 100%. Tachi were longer, thinner and had a more defined curve. They were used single-handedly. Think of them as cavalry sabers. But there is something else: the Japanese loved the concept of omote and ura, or having a front and back. One could tell which was the front by which side the signature was on the tang and also where the kurigata (cord-bearing knob) was on the scabbard. Katana and tachi were reversed in this case. While I don't doubt that there were some horsemen who used katana and some soldiers on foot who used tachi, I don't believe that was their intended use and that it was more dictated by the financial or wartime situation they were in. I'd be interested in learning more on the subject if you have references.
Comparing a katana to a longsword is about the same as comparing a Iphone to an Android. The Iphone tends to have a specific design because only one company makes it, kind of like only japan made the Katana. But with Android phones there is an enormous amount of variation because there are many companies that use it, like the variation in long swords through Europe. Somewhere in the mix there will be an Android phone that will be better in certain aspects. Of course I don't really care, a swords two primary jobs are to kill and wound. They were both proficient in that. Just like both phones are proficient at calling. It really seems to just be up to personal preference.
Largely you're right, it greatly has to do to personal preference. But there's also context, one should always consider context. The variation of the prefered weapon will usually be decided by what the person expects to face.
Well in terms of overall capabilities, there's not too much difference between certain types of XVIII & XIX Longswords and 16th century Koto era Katanas. Both of which were used extensively in heavily armored contexts. But the style of swordsmanship will influence how effectively one can fight with each sword. For instance, European swordsmen used to Longswords will find enlarged crosshilts very useful, in both unarmored and armored fighting - while a Kenjutsu practitioner likely won't. (it will get in his/her way of style of fighting.). A Kenjutsu practitioner will know how to use the Katana's curved, assymetric single-edged blade to his/her advantage, in parrying attacks away or augmenting thrusting efficiency - while the Longsword practitioner won't. It also depends a lot on which weapon the practitioner is used to.
Could it be said that in a more civilian context the aesthetic aspect would also be considered? After all swords were as much a symbol of status as they were self-defense weapons.
ROG41 that's a good point. Actually, we see one prominent example of this among Longswords, especially between type XVI and XVIII swords. XVI and XVIII are both fairly well balanced and capable swords, both popular throughout the late Medieval ages. The main difference is that XVIII tend to have stiffer (and sometimes thicker/broader) blades, that can be very useful in delivering cuts and thrusts in battlefield contexts. However, they also tend to be more heavier due to this. A XVI sword is very similar to the XVI, but it trades stiffness for the sake of weight. (it has a fuller in the middle, opposed to XVIII swords). Which may somewhat reduce cutting and thrusting ability against tougher targets by a little, but it makes the XVI lighter and more nimble. Which is essential for everyday carry and dueling/self defense.
Cornered Fox Japanese mail is nothing like modern costume mail in terms of strength. That's a fact. There's an enormous variety among Japanese Kusari armor types, so it's very hard to generalize their overall capabilities. And Japanese artworks are quite unreliable for determining historically accurate armor. Especially during the 14-16th century. (Artwork often depicts people wearing older-fashioned armors.). Western Europeans weren't the only ones with sophisticated heavy armors.
@redrutectic 486 Have you seen actual kendo in practice? It looks like saber fencing. The one slash bullshit is from samurai movies, much like the western quick draw. And a katana is strictly a side arm. A backup weapon for when things arnt going to plan. A nodachi might have some use against a horseman as a sort of piddly spear with an edge, but its not exactly comperable to a greatsword with a 2m long blade.
I need no channel youtube! Ok a nodachi was at its core a long sword two samurai mainly used pole arms spears blunt weapons bow and arrow and guns. Two there is know one touch element of kendo it’s full on sparring the same with saber fencing it is full on sparring also QuickDraw was a thing for self defense because the one faster to the draw is going to shoot and kill the opponent also both would be on horse more than likely so it would depend on who was better
They’re both assault rifles that fire an intermediate cartridge intended to be issued to front line troops as a primary fighting rifle. You can absolutely compare an m16 with an AK47. The M16 is more accurate and longer range as well as lighter with smaller lighter weight ammunition. It’s highly reliable if you maintain it properly and plenty powerful. The AK47 is less accurate, shorter range, heavier, and uses heavier larger ammunition. The primary advantage is that it’s easier to maintain so you can give it to illiterate peasants with close to zero training and it will still work. It’s also marginally more powerful at close range but not enough to make a significant difference.
Guy I would kindly refer you to the Deadliest Warrior episode 'Rangers VS NKSOF'. As much as I dislike Deadliest Warrior, for a variety of reasons, I recommend watching the episode to see the difference in impact between a 7.62x39mm and a 5.56x45mm round.
DeathsHood deadliest warrior is probably the last source you should use for ballistics information. Power is a matter of mathematics. 1/2MxV^2=E. Do the math yourself if you don’t believe me.7.62x39 is only marginally more powerful than 5.56x45. Larger, slower rounds often look like they “hit harder” in testing on inanimate objects because they have more inertia (MxV=I) and move the target more as a result, but inertia is basically irrelevant when gauging the effectiveness of a bullet on a living target. The deadliness of a rifle round is essentially a matter of penetration and hydraulic shock. Both cartridges penetrate just fine. Hydraulic shock is determined by how quickly the bullet slows down in the target, transferring energy in the form of a hydraulic shockwave that does a great deal of damage to living tissue. You can’t see that by shooting a dead pig because it’s not a closed hydraulic system like a living pig. And you certainly can’t show that by shooting any inanimate object.
Guy I didn't point you to it for the science. Literally _watch_ the episode. _Watch_ the difference in impact. Where they _shoot_ targets. The outcome isn't 'marginally' different.
DeathsHood I’ve seen it, and the “impact” you’re talking about is the inertia being transferred and moving the target more. Like I said above, inertia is irrelevant when gauging the effectiveness of a bullet on a living creature. There’s a big difference between shooting a living thing and a target. Did you not read everything I just wrote about hydraulic shock and whatnot? That’s proven science that isn’t up for debate. Power isn’t subjective, it’s an objective fact.
For decoration i would choose the katana, for actual combat i would choose the longsword but if i rly had to choose a weapon for an actual battle i would choose a good polearm like a halberd.
@Mark Plott "Ken, youll appreciate the Katana more if you watch your guts spill out onto the floor after just ONE slash of the Katana blade." you think european swords are not sharp?`moron.
It comes down to the style of use and the armor it used against. A katana does a pommel called a Fuchi. But it is decorative not functional. A pommel strike against an armored head is very effective. Try the same with a fuchi. It's not as effective. So yes it a point to make.
Medieval Knowledge n00b: Katana made of Magic and best sword ever, cuts through other swords and steel plate armor, best sword ever made. Medieval Knowledge Moderate: Katana is a piece of shit, an equivalent English longsword of the same weight will have more reach or of the same length will be lighter, Katana is heavy, slow, can't cut, made of Steel that's as bad as spaghetti, German Engineering is better than Japanese pig iron junk. Medieval Knowledge Adept: the Katana isn't the best but is a functional enough sword to get the job done, unlike Europe it isn't faced with many Sword-wielding opponents and a criteria to severely Increase the efficiency of design is really not needed and thus if it ain't broke don't fix it. English longsword fanboys and Katana fanboys are like Xbox and Playstation Fanboys, squabbling like over which is better while the Spear like PC Masterrace dominates both.
Not just Spears pal. Halberts. Just so you can stab at range, and STILL have the cutting power to destroy heavy infantry. P.S. Always make sure you got a few archers behind you in case the enemy does.
Not an excuse for weebish behavior, but I thought you should know in casual Japanese, the word katana can be used a generic word for sword, in the same way that the word "sake" can mean "booze" rather than specifically rice wine Sake or in the way the Southern US uses the word "coke" for all sodas generically instead of only meaning "Coca Cola."
Ye it’s really annoying when people do that, even calling it a samurai sword is completely wrong because there are many different blades like the odachi or the wakizashi
@@spinolover124 it's edge is a lot more brittle than the longsword and it's spine is a lot softer. Do you know the words wyrm and worm are related? In German for example another word for dragon is "Lindwurm" and the word for worm is "Wurm". Katana only cuts one way, the long sword cuts on both sides and is made with better steel, most katanas of their time period was made with impure steel that’s why Japanese sword smiths had to be highly skilled to get the most out of the shitty metal.
As they said in Rapid Fire, "Don't fear the weapon, fear the man". The user makes the weapon effective or not. How they trained, how they cared for the weapon, how they use it.
Not just design to take into consideration. Opposition, style of fighting, type of enemy formation, climate and cultural background also need to taken into consideration. You can never compare these two weapons. Saying one is better than the other is pointless
So to sum it up late to the party. Katanas are specialized swords that are made to compensate for shitty steel quality and cut everything that isn't metal armor. Longsword is an umbrella term for many double edged two handed medieval swords that, depending on their desing, can be lighter, faster or longer than the katana, or better at thrusting or cutting, but likely not all of them at the same time.
@@corneredfox Gotcha. If I understand correctly even that averageness was mostly compensated by the way katanas were made. The only truly bad part of katanas is that on average they break more easily than European sword.

This is such a thorough comparison...which only adds to my befuddlement at the fact that you neglected to mention the longsword's most useful feature: the ability to end an opponent rightly.
You can also half sword and do a murder stroke with a longsword to help in dealing with armored opponents. Which is why I think the longsword has the edge over the katana.

Shadiversity More variety means more bad swords as well. Variety equaling better is a logical fallacy. Besides that,we live in an age of advancement. we can make any sword far better than it usually was, so evolution continues.
longsword master race!
There's no better way to "win" an argument conclusively than to explain why the whole premise of the argument is flawed.
yup
I'd note the question would be better as 'comparing the average katana to the average longsword, which is overall more useful?
Did... did you not hear the ending remarks?

@@swaythegod5812 I know I was just joking honestly I'm tired of people thinking katanas are the best sword ever made lol
I've handled both katanas and type 14s (European longsword). Both blades are equally sharp, but Katanas do cut better for 2 simple reasons:
Either way, the main used weapon that saw impact for both where above all spears and arrows.
wiggalama katana didnt evolve from tachi. katana is a modern term. tachi is a katana based up on modern terms.
+wiggalama There is still a big difference between the exposure.

Side effects may include speaking short mispronunciations of Japanese phrases, running with your hands behind your back, making hand signals, hearing AMV soundtracks at all time, and the inability to find a suitable mate, but if you have enough money you should be able to bypass this last effect.

Well, PC win all discussions, even when not talking about games. :D
so this is a nice video and all ... but you refused to acknowledge one simple fact that puts katanas above any other sword: if you release all of your chakras the katana allows you to cut through every longsword you can imagine. This is signified by a black aura around the katana and your eyes glowing red. The effect is strengthened by screaming at the top of your lungs.
Yes but longswords have *"The Pommel"* to end someone rightly.
holy frick 😂 but if you're talking like that then might as well say "breathing technique"
Except for Excalibur, mate. Excalibur wins everything if its only condition is met: being just.

@@LeoMkII it still depend though where u shoot it... U dont end a person even with a 50Cal if u shoot it right on the foot
Leonardo Bacigalupe what does that have to do with coolness?
How do determine that ? There’s no obvious standard of that . Unless you’re a weeb so you proceed to wank the katana
how is shape of pommel significant? i mean... i guess if you want to end someone rightly...
Not shape but weight. Some were smaller, some bigger, some hollow, all to manipulate the point of balance, weight, and speed.
BarbikaPahor that is the most reveared and feared tactic. Katana loses cuz you can end them rightly. done, case closed
"grab it and use it by the blade, you can use the pommel as a really shitty mace or just general blunt instrument."
But that is not how you end your opponent rightly.

-Easy to learn how to use

-Heavy and unwieldy

-Low resilience (due to damage in combat)
-Less potential for mastery

BWA? Katanas are good against heavy armor? What?
with in ten feet and your weapon holstered your dead against a unarmed opponent, so says the police training manual. that person with a knife or a sword your dead that much faster and bloodier.
the weapon does not win the fight the fighter wins the fight.
And the samurai used horses too
Finally, a video about this from somebody I can trust.

True, but he would not take damage from a longsword either. Thats what maces and warhammer are for.
Oh no it am sure skill plays a part in winning a fight.
Oskar Schweitz That’s also what half-swording is for.
Longswords were sidearms in the same way katana were, to a main polearm or missile weapon

Wow. A Katana is weak without such a pommel.
Just the fact that i can grab a longsword by the blade and use pomel and guard agains armor makes it a far better weapon!
they both are designed to kill. the only difference is that one might get stuck when trying to cut something.
I've never been in a sword fight.
So I wouldn't know.
Yes, and we real men should not contemplate to try about it. Hahahahahahahahahahaha.

Well according to Dark Souls, long-sword wins almost everytime. Besides katana users are filthy dex users.
True but you DO also need 40 Dex to get the most out of the DkS1 longsword.
Who is this "longsword" you speak of, there is only one arming sword in Lordran and its name is Baldur Side Sword.
Erik Lanister The "longsword" (darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Longsword)
Is one of the strongest "fast" weapons in the game if you have a 40/40 build (or 2H with a 27/40) and definitely out damages the swag sword (although it is shorter) and its counterpart in other souls games have indeed also been pretty strong, which one is strongest at meta level I dunno, possibly its Demon's Souls counterparts with the Crushing "infusion" and 50 Str.
Not sure why you brought up 2 handing since you can two hand everything in the DS games
In Dark Souls 3 (haven't played 2, probably won't bother, from what I'm seen it's a joke) ALL Longswords are Quality weapons.
Well, here I opened video, half expecting another d*ckslapping about "katana can cut through time&space" vs "katanas break if exposed to breeze" video (really surprised you picked such a topic) and I end up experiencing one of the most unique and explanatory "vs" video I've ever seen. your superior knowledge of swords and explanation is amazing sir. great presentation.
16:33 Yes! With any weapon or arms it's not about one being "better", it' about understanding the tactical AND strategic applications of each.
I used to like katanas more than longswords, but I prefer a cross guard, hands are better than no hands.
Blocking with a katana is meant more for the enemy's sword to slide off the blade, so you'll always have your hands higher, with your blade pointing down, so when used correctly your hands should never be in danger.
@@KeelHeel katanas aren't really as durable as longswords, just saying.
@@noahcandy5422 I don't how whether or not that is true, but regardless, when blocking, the sword isn't meant to absorb the brunt of the impact anyway, since the other sword will slide off

Im a katana guy but saying katanas are superior in quality is just a load of bull.
I say because of modern technology I'd say blade quality with both swords even out it just comes down to the swordsman
Yeah katanas are super cool

Yeah, the completely impractical plasma sword that would be just as dangerous to the wielder as it is to the opponent.
You parry lightsaber with sword and they cut right through your block, you parry sword with lightsaber and the top half of the sword hits you in the head and knocks you out, then they would get a free short sword in the process xd
I'd take a gun.
I raise you a mini gun.
7. you can throw your pommel at the enemy
The Longsword is way longer than a Katana, with Katanas maximum length being 80 cms while average longsword length is 110 cms, with max being 120

yeah, as you can throw it at the samurai :D

@@woundedone I dont have to upgrade hardware everytime a new game comes out. Been there done that.

In my opinion Anime had a part in making Katana appear more superior than any other sword.
Tom Juraszek Anime & Hollywood makes swords in general overrated. I've watched a lot of medieval anime so yeaah the katana ain't the only sword bud. I guarantee people are only buying medieval swords because of watching game of thrones as well.
I do admit that katanas look pretty badass compared to a plain ol' longsword. But you know what they say: function over form.
Tom Juraszek very true. FUCKING WEEBS
And this has absolutely nothing to do with the argument at hand, whether the katana or the long sword is the better sword.
Lenin being correct as always
@@josephnebeker7976 he is implying that the Katana didn't really evolve much from that one particular design and purpose since they were mostly against the same group of enemies, using mostly the same gear.
The only question I'll answer is the last one: a frilly brocade kimono and a pair of steel sabatons.
Much more groin kicking power on the sabatons, especially if they are gothic style sabatons, i would not want to get kicked by those pointy bastards.
***** Hypothetical situation 1: You don't want to be naked, and you only get to wear either sabatons or kimono. (I'd pick kimono)
Hypothetical 2: You're dancing, and you're prone to stepping on toes. (I'd pick kimono)
Hypothetical 3: You want to have bare feet. (Kimono)
Hypothetical 4: You really hate stubbing your toe on furniture because it really hurts. (Sabatons)
So in conclusion, 75% of the time kimono is better. This is clearly an exception to your statement.
I'd still go with the cheese-maul.

Nope, If a samurai fight a knight with only a katana he will die, Because katana can't cut plate armor
They did not just fight with swords anyway. There will always be punches, kicks, swipes, martial arts, etc. Environmental damage could also be a factor too. And I wager psychological warfare too (between the duelists).
@@lonelygamerinspace548 Well, A samurai armor can only protect against slashes, And a longsword has a sharp point, So it can piece through the samurai armor
@@lonelygamerinspace548 Hmmm, Martial arts?
Tachi are badass
Adam Conlon personally I think the Tachi is more analogous to a Longsword also closer in time period.

TL;DR, the comparison doesn’t make sense because long-swords have too many variations
And yet any one of the variations is a superior self defense weapon to the katana.
@@wendyandmiketerell997 No. The quickdraw one touch thing comes from kurosava movies. Its about as fake as western 'duels'.
@redrutectic 486 They indeed serve different porpouses, but I do not agree the katana is the more versatile one.
this debate is like the AK47 vs m16, they're designed with completely different mindsets
